    Par quels procédés Flaubert fait-il surgir des mots le chiasme du visible et de l'invisible ? Cette problématique est, certes, bien commune parmi les réflexions sur le roman du XIXe siècle, largement motivé par le désir de représentation visuelle. Pourtant, chez Flaubert, la question comporte un aspect somatique. Non seulement l'étude des recherches physiologiques lui permet d'approfondir ses connaissances quant à la virtualité de l'image, mais encore et surtout ses singulières crises nerveuses lui donne accès à l'expérience de l'hallucination. Notre objectif premier, tout au long de cette étude, consiste à tenter de cerner la manière dont l'écriture peut passer outre le caractère rigide du langage scientifique et l'apparente indicibilité de la sensation. Loin d'être un artefact théorique, la notion même d'hallucination est comprise et incorporée dans le corpus flaubertien qui, in fine, proposera un rapport sensible au monde extérieur, ainsi qu'un mode tout nouveau de perception How does Flaubert use words to express the unseizable border lines between the visible and the invisible ? This question is a common preoccupation in nineteenth-century novels, motivated as many of them were by a desire to represent the world visually. In Flaubert's works, this concern is intimately related to representations of the body. While his readings about physiology enabled him to develop his rational understanding of the virtuality of the image, his own experience of nevrotic fits ensured that his knowledge of hallucination was not confined to the realm of the abstract. Our foremost objective in this thesis will be to examine how novelistic writing can circumvent the dryness and rigidity of scientific language, and overcome the apparent ineffability of somatic sensation. Far from being a mere theoretical concept, the notion of hallucination is analyzed in, and incorporated into, Flaubert's works, which ultimately establish the possibility of a sensory relationship to the world, and inaugurate radically new modes of perception

    La présente thèse étudie la manière dont la lumière est abordée et représentée dans une sélection de peintures du long siècle des Lumières, en relation avec l'épistémologie de l'époque, ainsi que l'appropriation technique et ludique de l'éclairage. Dans un contexte empiriste, l'observation savante du ciel remplaça dans une certaine mesure le ciel théologique. Vaste toile blanche s'offrant au regard, nos peintres de paysage (Towne, Cotman, Gainsborough, Constable, Cox) y puisèrent leur palette et leur schème pictural, le nuage, paradigme empirique, désignation et perturbation de l'espace et de la figuration. Parallèlement, l'avènement de l'éclairage artificiel public et scénique encouragea une peinture prométhéenne (Wright of Derby, Martin, Loutherbourg), gagnée par les ombres des Lumières, qui en fournirent l'inspiration, le dessin et le fond. Turner, quant à lui, s'employa plus frontalement à tenter de figurer l'apparaître lumineux, la manifestation du visuel plus que du visible : comment résoudre l'aporie de la lumière, qui préside au visible, mais ne peut être vue ? The present work studies the way light is tackled and pictured in a selection of paintings of the Enlightenment period, in relation to the epistemology of the time, together with the technical and theatrical appropriation of lighting. In the empirical context of the Enlightening, scientific observation of the sky somewhat replaced the theological heavens. Our landscape painters (Towne, Cotman, Gainsborough, Constable, Cox) drew their palette from this was blank canvas, as well as their pictorial scheme- the cloud : an empirical trope, both denoting and disturbing space and representation. In parallel, the advent of artificial public and theatrical lighting encouraged a Promothean type of painting (Wright of Derby, Martin, Loutherbourg), one that was encroached on by the shadows of the Enlightening, which provided its inspiration, design, background and substance. As for Turner, he strove to represent light more frontally, and render visuality rather than visibility : how could the aporia of light be solved, in so far as light rules over what can be see, and yet cannot itself be seen ?

    A la fin du XIXe siècle, les empires coloniaux connaissent une modernisation culturelle et sociale en réponse au choc des cultures, et un éveil des consciences politiques stimulées par les idées des Lumières et les révolutions européennes. Le roman historique apparaît tel un outil de modélisation d'une conscience historique et de création d'une identité culturelle moderne. A partir de quatre romans historiques principaux : "El Cerro de las campanas" de Juan Antonio Mareos (Mexique, 1868) ; "His natural life" de Marcus Clarke (Australie, 1874) ; "Anandamath" de Bankin Chatterjee (Bengale, 1882) ; "Al Abbassa" de Jurji Zaydan (Egypte, 1906), nous analysons l'émergence du roman, dans des traditions diverses, selon trois approches : structurale, intertextuelle et esthétique, lesquelles révèlent les stratégies rhétoriques de ces écrivains réformateurs et, depuis le discours esthétisé du roman historique postcolonial, interrogent le rapport entre Histoire, littérature et politique

    Par l'analyse critique des procédures d'établissement des éditions, et de circulation des commentaires, cette étude montre comment au fil du temps, à partir de quatre pages manuscrites dont la transcription, pourtant, oblige à des interventions qui réduisent à peu sa prétendue authenticité, une tradition a pu mettre en place et perpétuer ce que l'on désigne aujourd'hui le plus ordinairement du nom vague de "Pari de Pascal". La grande diversité des délimitations, dénominations, leçons, interprétations, que l'on ne peut en aucune manière considérer comme une progressive venue au jour de la véritable forme d'un texte, engage à contester l'économie de la textualité, à faire voir comment la série des éditions et des commentaires produit, dans un mouvement de répétitions, ce qu'elle représente comme sa propre origine, et institue ains ce qu'elle désigne comme un texte et un auteur This study shows how four manuscript pages happened to become through the ages what is nowadays most usually known as the "Pari de Pascal" ("Pascal's wager"), one of the famous pieces of the so called "Pensées de Pascal". A critical analysis of publication editing procedures and commentary circulation demonstrates that they were established and perpetuated as a text by a tradition through many operations of transcription which greatly reduce their supposed authenticity. As we explore the wide range of delimitations, denominations, philological lectures, and interpretations, which these pages underwent and which can in no way be considered as a progressive bringing to light of the text true form, we are led to contest the economy of textuality, and to show how the series of publications and commentaries produces, in a process of repetitions, the very object that it depicts as its own origin, and how this series constructs and institutes what it represents as a text and an author

    Tristram Shandy de Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) reste un texte déroutant et original, plus de deux siècles après la mort de son auteur. Cette thèse s'attache à analyser les points de contact possibles entre le texte de Sterne et les gravures qui furent publiées et insérées dans des éditions entre 1760 et 1817. L'illustration puise à la source du texte tout en reflétant l'esthétique des divers artistes. Les gravures dans les éditions illustrées sont également le témoignage de changements dans la culture de l'imprimé et de l'histoire du livre durant les deux dernières décennies du XVIIIe siècle. Une première partie s'articule sur la circularité entre le texte et l'image. L'analyse met au jour des mécanismes de migration et de porosité entre les deux media. La seconde partie s'attache à déterminer les différentes formes que peut revêtir la notion de variabilité. La réflexion et déflexion entre le texte et l'image sont au cœur de cette étude, mais les images et le texte de Sterne sont aussi appréhendés comme le lieu d'une tension, celle qui caractérise l'irréductibilité des deux media. C'est ce qui fait l'objet de l'étude dans la troisième partie. L'étude vise à mieux cerner les jeux et les enjeux qui sous-tendent l'illustration d'un texte aussi foisonnant que Tristram Shandy Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy remains an oddity, well over two hundred years after the author's death. This thesis explores the relationship between the text and a corpus of illustrations to Tristram Shandy from 1760 to 1817. Illustrations that are offsprings of Sterne's text are also rooted in each artist's aesthetic response. Those images are moreover closely related to the book trade and changes in print culture in the last decades of the eighteenth century. The first part deals with the impact of illustrations, namely how those images migrate from a model to imitations and new creations. A fundamental pattern of circularity is established between the verbal and the visual to see how the images bear traces of text in a variety of ways. The analysis in the second part draws on the notion of variability, whether in format of the book or within the narrative. This thesis argues that prints which accompany the text deflect the reader's interpretation and reception. Furthermore, there is a mutually mirroring effect on both the text and the images. Although a kind of perfect harmony between the two medium may seem appealing, text and image do not dovetail. The argument aims at pinpointing paradoxical features of that relationship, more so when it comes to illustrating a text as zany and fluctuating as Tristram Shandy

    Tous les éléments, textuels et visuels, de DDD de Paul Valéry participent à une mise en scène de l'instabilité, déjouant les attentes du lecteur. Pour ce faire Valéry fait usage d'une rhétorique, souvent classique, qui sait s'adjoindre les ressources du figural. Confronté à leurs effets, le lecteur doit accepter la déroute comme principe de lecture. Cet effet d'égarement est renforcé par une matière textuelle et visuelle dynamique. DDD, échappant à la clôture et à l'inertie, exige une perpétuelle circulation du regard. Des temporalités coexistent. La capacité de transformation de DDD suscite une interrogation sur la ligne mimique, en relation avec la "formule pathique" warburgienne. Altérant la figure humaine, la mimique entraîne une réflexion sur l'informe, dont Degas et Valéry jouent selon les moyens de leur art Degas, Danse, Dessin by Paul Valéry can't fail to surprise the reader : all the elemnts, both textual and visual, actually take part in a production of instability. That is why everything works towards presenting a text which is very far from the most conventional formal and hermeneutic expectations. Valéry is writing here for the reader to choose his own rhythm, even if i/he is subtly led according to the author's design. The taste of polymorphism -structural, narrative but also using the text-picture relations- is quite effective. to rich is aim, Valéry sets up a singular rhetoric, knowing how to take advantage of the material means of the book, confirming its suspensive function. The ressources of the figural, bursting in the order of the discourse, have to be associated with the rhetorical means. Between rhetoric and figural, the reader has to accept to be disconcerted. Moreover, some formal flexibility - structural, thematic and metaphorical - holds one's attention : the animal reference, for instance, conveys the energy of the movement, embodied by the figure of a dancer. DDD favours a visual reading, like a polyptych. The look has to circulate, letting different coexisting temporalities, which give to the form a real power of transformation. The latter conveys a questionning about the virtues of gesture. From the "gesture line" of Degas as the "movement of life found in the Greeks time" to the pathic formula, after the warburgian terminology, a relation of closeness has to be considered. Distorting the human figure, the gesture leads to a reflexion on the undefined, interval between two forms, that Degas and Valéry use according to the means of their art
