Abu ‘Abdollâh’ Jafar ibn Mohammad Rudaki (c. 880 CE-941 CE) was a poet to the Samanid court which ruled much of Khorâsân (northeastern Persia) from its seat in Bukhara. He is widely regarded as the father of Persian poetry, for he was the first major poet to write in New Persian language, following the Arab conquest in the seventh and eighth centuries, which established Islam as the official religion, and made Arabic the predominant literary language in Persian-speaking lands for some two centuries. This book presents Rudaki as the founder of a new poetic aesthetic, which was adopted by subsequent generations of Persian poets. Rudaki is credited with being the first to write in the rubâi form; and many of the images we first encounter in Rudaki’s lines have become staples of Persian poetry

"This title was originally meant to discuss the essence and activity of the demonic forces in Lurianic Kabbalah, but was expanded as a monograph dealing with the main principles of the Lurianic Kabbalah as a whole. The research is based mainly on the writings of Hayyim ben Joseph Vital, a student of Rabbi Luria. The author comes to the conclusion that from the Lurianic Kabbalah arises a bold myth of a covert ancient dualism of divinity, in which dealing with evil forces serves as a central element. This short study is the first in a comprehensive investigation of Lurianic Kabbalism."

"In the 1880s, Warsaw was a hub for Jewish writers and cultural agents from across the Russian Empire and outside it. In just two generations, it became the most dynamic and prolific center for Hebrew and Yiddish literature and journalism. Writers active in Warsaw not only enriched Jewish culture but also played an active role in Jewish life in Poland, facing a variety of everyday challenges. The main manifestation of literary life was the Union of Jewish Writers and Journalists, a socially and culturally significant institution. It reflected the ever-changing facets of the Jewish literary environment in Warsaw. This book reveals a variety of sources pertaining to this vibrant life in the years 1918-1939, as well as the years of ghetto and destruction, 1939-1942. Different historical and social aspects of this period in Jewish history are examined vis-à-vis these and other sources."

Do you know how they get animals to breed in captivity? They put them in the same cage. One moment you're colleagues, and then it's Friday night drinks, a quick grope, and you're an item. When Tom and Amy get together, they find themselves living in each other's pockets. But all too soon the ghosts of relationships past begin to interfere with the here and now. A comedy about love, loss and laminating machines, 'My Romantic History' premiered at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in August 2010.

David, Kojo and Sharon grew up on a London estate. Now in their mid-20s, they're eyeing another kind of life. But how do you choose the right path when temptation lies around every corner? If your emotional or financial debt is sky high, how do you buy your way out? Bola Agbaje's play asks whether being out of the system might be just as good as being in it. Agbaje's energetic, vibrant dialogue captures the dynamic rhythm of spoken language and she portrays an under-represented slice of society with skill and compassion. 'Off the Endz' premiered at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in February 2010.

Commented on by a gossiping Greek chorus, 'Onassis' is a portrait of the complex and sometimes dark entanglements of powerful families, Onassis's relationship with Jacqueline and the scorned Maria, and the tragedy of his son Alexandros. Onassis himself is charming, charismatic, and inescapably sinister. The play premiered as 'Aristo' at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2008; 'Onassis' is a revised version.

Winner of the Laurence Olivier Play of the Year Award in 1988, and many other major awards, 'Our Country's Good' was first produced at the Royal Court Theatre in 1988. Wertenbaker's adaptation of Keneally's novel 'The Playmaker' concerns a group of Royal Marines and convicts in a penal colony in New South Wales in the 1780s, who put on a production of 'The Recruiting Officer'. The play shows the class system in the convict camp and discusses themes such as sexuality, punishment, the Georgian judicial system, and the idea that that it is possible for 'theatre to be a humanising force'.

'Polar Bears', first performed at the Donmar Warehouse in 2010, is a captivating play exploring non-linear structures, philosophy and love. It follows the relationship between Kay - who has bipolar disorder - her family and her philosopher husband John. Through a discontinuous series of scenes, we see the relationship between Kay and John develop and founder; she becomes lost to another world, a world in which John does not belong. Balancing humour with extraordinary pathos, this is a story of Nietzsche, Jesus, children's books about monsters, and the pain of loving someone you can never really know. Polar Bears is thought-provoking and intelligent, and refuses to offer any easy answers about those involved in mental instability.

Every thirty years, the planet Saturn returns to the same place in the universe. An enthralling time-bending structure based around this astronomical calendar allows 'Saturn Returns' to watch Gustin Novak over a period of sixty years in a series of deftly interwoven scenes. The play visits him at the ages of 28, 58 and 88, as he reaches a series of crossroads with three women, and comes to understand how the echoes of the past have defined the orbit of his life. Moving from wry humour to touching poignancy, Haidle's play unashamedly looks for answers to life's biggest questions. It opened in 2010 at the Finborough Theatre, London.

Cheating at snakes and ladders, fighting over comic books, a bungled infidelity beneath the tree. Christmas has arrived in the Bunker household along with family and friends. But as the children lurk just out of sight, it's the adults who are letting the side down. Alan Ayckbourn's masterly Season's Greetings offers a seriously entertaining look at the misery and high jinks of an average family Christmas.

A Jewish family mourns a dead patriarch. The term is 'sitting Shiva' (mourning for 7 days), when friends and relatives commiserate, usually in the home of the deceased. As children, we always understood this to be 'sit and shiver', which also seemed most appropriate. While death has claimed the old man and triggered the usual inflated eulogies - 'how important a man becomes when they die' - it has also brought to the surface hidden anxieties and grievances, only exacerbated when a visitor shows up bearing strange news that threatens to tear the family apart.

Simon is looking forward to lunch with Patrick Mulligan, the first man he slept with nearly twenty years previously, while playing Puck in a school production. It soon becomes apparent that Patrick is expecting to see not Simon, but the boy who played Lysander, and their lunch is cut short. When Simon is approached by Patrick's wife the situation becomes increasingly tortured and darkly comic. 'Southwark Fair' premiered at the National Theatre, London, in February 2006.

'Stuff happens ... And it's untidy, and freedom's untidy, and free people are free to make mistakes and commit crimes and do bad things.' The famous response of Donald Rumsfeld, American Secretary of Defense, to the looting of Baghdad, at a press conference on 11 April 2003, provides the title for a play, specially written for the Olivier Theatre, about the extraordinary process leading up to the invasion of Iraq. How does the world settle its differences, now there is only one superpower?.

By turns tender, shocking and funny, 'Sucker Punch' looks back on what it was like to be young and black in the '80s and asks if the right battles have been fought, let alone won. In the red corner: Leon Davidson - Black British champ or Uncle Tom? In the blue corner: Troy Augustus - American powerhouse or naive cash cow? Having spent their youth in the same London boxing gym, vying for the favouritism of inspirational, foul-mouthed trainer Charlie Maggs, the two former friends step into the ring and face up to who they are.
