    La ricerca costituisce uno studio variazionistico dei processi di topicalizzazione in un corpus di italiano parlato spontaneo, prodotto da parlanti sociolinguisticamente differenziati. L’obiettivo della ricerca è indagare il rapporto fra la segmentazione, le diverse conformazioni testuali e la variazione sociolinguistica e individuale. La predilezione per un modello di analisi sintattica, basato su un approccio dinamico, in cui la struttura venga studiata a partire dalle forze che contribuiscono alla sua costituzione, ha spinto ad analizzare, parallelamente ai tipi ‘canonici’ di topicalizzazione, una serie di sequenze definibili ‘ai margini’ delle categorie principali, solitamente relegate nella sfera dei fenomeni di esecuzione. L’impressione è che l’analisi microscopica di queste strutture, solo apparentemente ‘periferiche’, contribuisca a rivelare aspetti ‘centrali’ dei fenomeni di topicalizzazione. La sistematicità di alcuni aspetti della variazione generalmente ignorati dallo studioso attratto esclusivamente dai ‘fatti’ di competenza sembra infatti spingere a riconsiderare in maniera problematica i rapporti tra competenza e esecuzione e tra periferia e centro dei processi linguistici. L’impressione è in definitiva che lo studio della sintassi in termini di processo, insieme all’approfondimento dei cosiddetti fenomeni di esecuzione, possa gettare luce sulla natura e sulla ‘generazione’ dei fenomeni sintattici in generale e dei ‘fatti’ di topicalizzazione in particolare. In questa prospettiva si inquadra la scelta di studiare le topicalizzazioni in un corpus di parlato spontaneo, in quanto esso rappresenta un osservatorio privilegiato per lo studio dei fatti linguistici in un’ottica ‘processuale’. Il parlato consente infatti di osservare i fenomeni in una situazione dinamica di lingua in ‘uso’ e dunque di totale assenza di ‘cristalizzazione’, ovvero prima che essi si ‘fissino’ nella forma grammaticalizzata in cui solitamente li si osserva.
