Ulrich von Hutten (1488-1523), Renaissance-Reformation publisher and ardent champion of German nationalism, has previously been characterized as a bitter and vehement political satirist. From this concise, critical survey of his comic writing a more balanced, congenial image of Hutten emerges.

In this study Professor Dorfman applies the methods of modern linguistics to literary analysis. Literature may be described as the structured use of language: the modern linguistic analyzes language in a search for the minimal units of sound and form, phoneme and morpheme, and determines the combinations by which they can communicate meaning. The author here searches for a minimal structural unit in the literary narrative analogous to the phoneme and the morpheme in language structure. Based on a detailed analysis of the Roland and the Cid and twelve additional Romance narratives, Professor Dorfman's argument is that the structure of the medieval Romance epics may be analyzed into functional units which he calls "narremes." He divides a narrative into two types of structure: the superstructure and the substructure. A narrative, by definition, is a series of incidents. All the incidents in the narrative, taken as written, form the superstructure. Analysis, however, shows that many of the incidents may be abstracted from the narrative without deflecting the story-line. On the other hand, other incidents reveal themselves as organically linked with each other, so they cannot be omitted, without destroying the story-line. These selected incidents are the narremes, which make up the substructure of the narrative. This method of analysis produces so interesting and surprising results, results which make an important advance in research in linguistics and Romance literature. Eugene Dorfman, as an orthodox structuralist, has focused strictly on the formal descriptions of the narratives; but his analysis leads into the great traditional problems of literary history, and in particular poses anew the problem of the origins of the epic

From "a dirty hand": Words are very powerful. You aren't sure of that? Think of all the things you won't say. Wonderful remark in a note I had this week from William Carlos Williams. He spoke of the "disease" of wanting to write poetry; said he had been "off" poetry for many months and-he said-"I feel clean and unhappy." One reason for keeping this kind of notebook: you can put on record the retort you couldn't think of at last night's party. Photographs of Henry James in his middle years should be commented upon. Gone is the shy aesthete of the youthful portrait (by LaFarge?) . This bearded man has a fierce look, even a bestial one. Here is perhaps-I don't know-James at his most generative. Again this man disappears in the shaven, bald, final James, the famous James-the Grand Lama. I noticed when Lindsay (thirteen) read aloud a passage from a hunting book the other day he pronounced "genital" as "genteel." I'd love to see a literary history titled "The Genital Tradition." Contrast "business ethics" and the ethics of art. Nobody writes a poem hoping it will wear out in four or five years. Between 1951 and 1966 the distinguished American poet Winfield Townley Scott kept a series of notebooks in which he set down his thoughts on poetry, literature, the literary scene, and life in general. Shortly before his untimely death in 1968 he made a selection of the entries he thought were best and gave it the title "a dirty hand." These perceptive notes, some tart, some gentle, some boisterous, some wistful, give us a remarkable insight into the workings of his creative mind. George P. Elliott has said of Scott: "In a very solid way, I think he was as rock-bottom American a poet as we have had since Frost." The introduction is by Scott's good friend Merle Armitage, who also designed the original edition of this book

In his preface Maynard Mack writes, "Criticism in the case of literary figures is never entirely separable from literary history and biography; yet it is more or less separable, and the merit of this book, if it has any, lies in the two latter areas. If I am judged to be right about the profoundly political orientation of most of Pope's poems of the [17]30's and about there being a certain emblematic quality in his way of life at Twickenham whose shaping influence is also felt inside the poems, here may be an additional complexity of texture which criticism will wish to take into account." In this work Mr. Mack explores the tension in Pope's life between Garden and City, between the poet's desire for seclusion and privacy and his concern for political and social issues. In a vivid and factual reconstruction, including many illustrations and contemporary documents, he presents the famous garden, grotto, and villa as a setting that both expressed Pope as a man and contributed to the dramatic personality who speaks to us in the satires and epistles. At the same time, he uncovers and elucidates a vein of political satire which is present in these poems to a degree not hitherto recognized. Retirement attitudes, Mr. Mack argues, combine with political attitudes to effect in all of Pope's later poetry a confrontation of Sir Robert Walople's England with a poet's country of the mind; "Pope's 'creation' of Twickenham constituted an act of the mythopoeic imagination and (to borrow a phrase from the manuals of religious meditation) a 'composition of place' without which he could not have written his mature poems as we have them." Mr. Mack provides here a biographical and historical context that throws new light on the mature works of one of the great poets and satirists of English literature

Too often the vastness of The Ring and the Book has discouraged modern readers, yet it has become increasingly clear that the meaning of this monumental poem rests on its whole design. In this work the author deals with the poem in its entirety to show the culmination of both Browning's artistic skill and his moral and aesthetic philosophy. Approaching the whole poem from the point of view of the poet's role (rather than the "what-happens" approach) this study examines the complex method by which Browning demonstrates how a poet goes about making his audience share his gift of judging human guilt and innocence. The author discusses some of the main questions that have concerned critics for so long - the problem of Browning's attitude toward "fact," the real meaning of his "doctrine of commitment," and the connection between his optimistic philosophy and his fascination with the role of evil in human affairs. Professor Sullivan's argument not only demonstrates convincingly the extent of Browning's technical achievement in the Ring and the Book, but also casts light on many of his lesser poems by showing how his gradually emerging moral and aesthetic philosophy shaped their meaning. In addition, she clearly refutes the often repeated charges that his poetry lacks a well-defined world-view; the very principle of development-or "evolutionary struggle"-is revealed as what ultimately gives consistency and validity to his work

This book is the first full-scale account of the growth of Wordsworth's thinking about the theory of poetry. It draws mainly on his formal critical essays but also on unpublished material and personal statements about poetics and the growth and constitution of the poet's mind in The Prelude, in other verse, and in letters. The foundation of the discussion is an account of the Preface to Lyrical Ballads, based on Professor Owen's edition of that text published in 1957. The chapters on the Essays upon Epitaphs, the Preface or 1815, and the Essay, Supplementary to the Preface, trace a process of development in which the critic silently abandons the more embarrassingly controversial elements of his earliest argument (such as his advocacy of the language of rustics and the language of prose), confirms its more satisfactory features, and progresses to a subtle, intricate, and rewarding account of his psychology of literary creation and of the audience's reaction to literature. This study reveals, on the one hand, Wordsworth's familiarity with the general drift of eighteenth-century of theorizing on aesthetics, especially as it dealt with the concepts of primitivism and of the sublime; and on the other, his increasing grasp of a psychological definition of the poet's making, and the reader's reception of literature such as is more usually associated with Coleridge. Professor Owen's understanding of the documents and his wide knowledge of the background of the theories emerge in this important contribution to Romantic Studies

Eugene Dorfman, as an orthodox structuralist, has focused strictly on the formal descriptions of the narratives; but his analysis leads into the great traditional problems of literary history, and in particular poses anew the problem of the origins of the epic.
