    Aldhelm of Malmesbury has been described as 'the first English man of letters'. He was the first Germanic author to compose extensively in Latin metrical verse, and his Latin works were amongst the most influential in Anglo-Saxon England. Aldhelm can also be considered the best-read of Anglo-Saxon poets, in both senses of the phrase: he read most and was most read. In this first book-length study of Aldhelm's poetic art Andy Orchard traces the sources and models for Aldhelm's idiosyncratic style, as well as the nature and extent of his influence on later Anglo-Latin verse. Aldhelm's innovations in Latin verse technique are emphasized, in particular his special debt to the specific techniques of Old English vernacular verse.

    Language and the hermeneutic journey, like mystery, are never exhausted. Accordingly, in Milton and the Hermeneutic Journey, Gale H. Carrithers, Jr., and James D. Hardy, Jr., do not seek to provide a last word in the reading of Milton but instead employ a Miltonic method that renounces closure and the pretense of a monopoly on truth. Their aim in this cross-disciplinary work is to suggest a general interpretive matrix that embraces most of Milton's poetic corpus in a coherent rather than exhaustive vision. In the most comprehensive reading of Milton in over a decade, Carrithers and Hardy proceed on three assumptions: that love, in all its various and contradictory forms, is of central importance in Milton's poetry; that much of Milton's poetry is a discourse in theology, primarily Augustinian and biblically based; and that theirs will be a hermeneutic analysis of a hermeneutic text. Both Miltonists and scholars from the humanities in general will find satisfaction in reconsidering Milton from this different perspective. And for those readers who sense a profound disorder in the modern world, Carrithers and Hardy suggest that the greatest critic of the myth of power can offer reflections still enhancing to life, as well as strategies for critically reading any text that would make extreme claims upon us.

    The sudden and spectacular growth in Dante's popularity in England at the end of the eighteenth century was immensely influential for English writers of the period. But the impact of Dante on English writers has rarely been analysed and its history has been little understood. Byron, Shelley, Keats, Coleridge, Blake, and Wordsworth all wrote or painted while Dante's work - its style, project, and achievement commanded their attention and provoked their disagreement. The Circle of Our Vision discusses each of these writers in detail, assessing the nature of their engagement with the Divine Comedy and the consequences for their own work. It explores how Romantic poets understood Dante, what they valued in his poetry and why, and sets them in the context of contemporary commentators, translators, and illustrators (including Henry Fuseli and John Flaxman), both in England and Europe. Romantic readings of the Divine Comedy are shown to disturb our own ideas about Dante, which are based on Victorian and Modernist assumptions. An important contribution to Romantic and Dante scholarship, The Circle of Our Vision also presents a reconsideration of the concept of 'influence' in general, using the example of Dante's presence in Romantic poetry to challenge Harold Bloom's belief that the relations between poets are invariably a fight to the death.
