    'Le grand courant de la civilisation moderne' : the railway metonym -- 'Der mensch ist, was er isst' : the food metonym -- Back from the future : the suicide metonym. Modernity's Metonyms considers the representation of temporal frameworks in stories by two nineteenth-century Spanish authors: the canonical Leopoldo Alas and Antonio Ros de Olano, an author who is receiving increasing attention from scholars of nineteenth-century Spanish literature. These narratives are considered in terms of their treatment of three metonymic themes: the railway, food and suicide. The reiteration of specific associations is explored across a range of disciplines, from literature, philosophy, historiography, to natural history. French, German, American, British, as well as Spanish writers are brought into the discussion in order to develop our understanding of nineteenth-century Spanish literary modernity. Exploration of the associations prompted by these three themes leads to the suggestion that literary modernity can be considered as the expression of the perception that linear time, bringing together the past, the present and the future, was fragmenting into countless simultaneous moments

    Combining original historical research with literary analysis, Adam Barrows takes a provocative look at the creation of world standard time in 1884 and rethinks the significance of this remarkable moment in modernism for both the processes of imperialism and for modern literature. As representatives from twenty-four nations argued over adopting the Prime Meridian, and thereby measuring time in relation to Greenwich, England, writers began experimenting with new ways of representing human temporality. Barrows finds this experimentation in works as varied as Victorian adventure novels, high modernist texts, and South Asian novels--including the work of James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, H. Rider Haggard, Bram Stoker, Rudyard Kipling, and Joseph Conrad. Demonstrating the investment of modernist writing in the problems of geopolitics and in the public discourse of time, Barrows argues that it is possible, and productive, to rethink the politics of modernism through the politics of time Introduction : modernism and the politics of time -- Standard time, Greenwich, and the cosmopolitan clock -- "Turning from the shadows that follow us": modernist time and the politics of place -- At the limits of imperial time; or, dracula must die! -- "The shortcomings of timetables" : Greenwich, modernism, and the limits of modernity -- "A few hours wrong" : standard time and Indian literature in English -- Conclusion : a postmodern politics of time? Raum- und Zeitstrukturen sind zentrale Gestaltungselemente mittelalterlicher Erzählungen, insbesondere der großen höfischen Romane. Dieses Buch führt auf der Basis moderner narratologischer Theorien in die Poetik epischer Texte des Mittelalters ein und bietet damit Grundlagen für die selbständige Analyse vormoderner Erzählstrukturen. Die Einführung nimmt ihren Ausgang von Zeit- und Raumtheorien der Antike und des Mittelalters und erläutert u. a. die Konzepte Aristoteles’, Platons und Augustinus’. Auf diesem geistesgeschichtlichen Fundament aufbauend, erklärt sie dann die Charakteristika der fiktiven Geographie mittelalterlicher Texte und ihrer stark von den Lehren der Rhetorik und den Topoi der abendländischen Tradition geprägten Landschaftsentwürfe. Mittels der Kategorien ‚Raum‘ und ‚Zeit‘ erschließt diese Einführung auf verständliche Weise zentrale Phänomene und Begriffe der mittelalterlichen Erzählliteratur und eignet sich daher insbesondere für Studenten der mediävistischen Literaturwissenschaft hervorragend als Seminarlektüre oder für das Selbststudium. Working on the basis of modern narratological theories, this book introduces the reader to the poetics of epic texts from the Middle Ages and thus provides a foundation for the independent analysis of pre-modern narrative structures. The introduction takes as its starting point theories of time and space from Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and among others elucidates the concepts developed by Aristotle, Plato and Augustine. From this basis in the history of ideas, it then explains the characteristics of the fictive geography of medieval texts and their projected landscapes, which are strongly influenced by the rhetorical theories and topoi of the Western tradition. Using the categories of ‘space’ and ‘time’, this introduction provides an accessible entry to central phenomena and concepts of medieval narrative literature.
