Oder sind separierte, das Geschlecht isolierende und fokussierende Zugangsweisen nach wie vor legitim - ja sogar notwendig, um Geschlecht (wieder) in die Geschichte einzuschreiben?Der Band geht anhand aktueller Forschungsprojekte aus historisch arbeitenden Disziplinen der Frage nach, wie die Kategorie »Geschlecht« zurzeit untersucht wird und welche spezifischen Probleme und Vorzüge mit den unterschiedlichen Zugriffsweisen verbunden sind. Methodische und (meta-)theoretische Fragestellungen stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt Is gender one of the metacategories of historiographical research which must be factored in, integrated in every analysis?     In the 2000s, China's WTO entry constituted a major trade shock. In this paper, we analyze its eff ects on trade and value chains. The fragmentation of the global value chain makes it hard to disentangle who produces for whom. Value added trade contains this information. We build a multi-sector gravity model of the Eaton and Kortum (2002) type with inter-sectoral linkages that gives rise to a gravity equation for value added trade flows. As in Koopman et al. (forthcoming), exports can be decomposed into value added exports, exports of foreign value added and double counting. We construct a panel database of value added trade for 40 countries and the years 1995-2009 from the World Input-Output database. With WIOD and tariff data, we estimate the gravity model's key parameters. The simulation then hypothetically sets tari s w.r.t. China back to their pre-accession levels. We find that China's WTO entry strengthend the Asian production network. Chinese value added in exports reduced and increasingly foreign value added - most prominently from Japan and Korea - is assembled and exported.

    We incorporate trade in tasks l a Grossman and Rossi-Hansberg (2008) into the international trade theory of fi rm organization of Marin and Verdier (2012) to examine how off shoring affects the way firms organize. We test the predictions of the model based on firm level data of 660 Austrian and German multinational firms with 2200 subsidiaries in Eastern Europe and we show that the data are consistent with the theory. We find that o ffshoring of production tasks leads firms to reorganize to more decentralized management improving competitiveness of offshoring firms. We show further that offshoring of skilled managers relaxes the 'war for talent' constraint but toughens competition and thus has an ambiguous impact on the level of decentralization and CEO wages of offshoring firms. In sufficiently open economies, however, managerial offshoring unambiguously leads to more decentralized management.

    This paper complements research on how love of wealth bears on key variables in a Ramsey-Cass-Koopmans growth framework. It is shown that for an optimum the social planner cannot have an excessive love of wealth. If the planner has the 'right' love of wealth an optimum exists and implies higher long-run per capita capital, income and consumption relative to the standard optimal growth model. The optimum implies dynamic efficiency with the possibility to get arbitrarily close to the Golden Rule where long-run per capita consumption is maximal. It is shown that the optimal path is attaining its steady state more slowly. Thus, the beneficial effects of love of wealth materialize later than in the standard model. Furthermore, the economy can be decentralized as a competitive private ownership economy. One can then identify love of wealth with the "spirit of capitalism''.     We study strategic communication between a Sender and Receiver who are both uncertain about their preferred actions. The Sender observes noisy signals about both players' ideal policies and then communicates with the Receiver. Even though Sender and Receiver disagree about ideal policies as a function of the Sender's information, we can show that: i) there are information structures such that in equilibrium the Sender credibly communicates his ideal policy and the Receiver correctly takes the Sender's advice at face value and ii) the unique outcome of Nash-bargaining over information structures induces precisely a situation where communication about ideal policies is credible. The resulting equilibrium features message strategies that are smooth in a subspace of the Sender's information. Smooth communication equilibria are extremely tractable. Senders with better aligned preferences are endogenously endowed with better information and therefore give more accurate advice.

    In this paper, we use the estimated three-region DSGE model GEAR, which pictures Germany, the Euro Area and the Rest of the world and which is used by the Deutsche Bundesbank for policy analysis, to analyze how discretionary fiscal policy in Germany and the rest of EMU affected GDP growth and unemployment during the crisis. Not surprisingly, stimulus programmes positively affected domestic GDP growth rates while consolidation measures had a negative impact. The contribution of fiscal policy on domestic GDP growth was only small, however, amounting to a maximum of 1.6% for Germany and 0.8% for the rest of the Euro Area in terms of annualized quarter-on quarter growth rates. The main driver for the evolution of GDP were rest of the world and risk premia shocks, followed by domestic non-fiscal shocks, amongst them the technology shock being the most important one. Spillovers of fiscal policy shocks are negligibly small, which holds for spillovers of fiscal shocks in Germany to the rest of the Euro Area and vice versa. This latter finding is confirmed by an impulse-response analysis and by calculating the corresponding multipliers. Hence, relating these findings to current discussions, our analysis suggests that domestic fiscal policy has little effects on the other regions' GDP within EMU and can, therefore, contribute only little to solving the imbalances problem.

    This paper sets up an imperfect-competition model of a small open economy, and undertakes a welfare comparison of the Corporate Business Income Tax (CBIT) and the Allowance for Corporate Equity tax (ACE). A main result is that a small open economy should levy a positive source tax on capital in a market with free firm entry. Our analysis also shows that the well known neutrality property of the ACE tax is no longer true when firms are mobile and can enter the market. Which tax system is better from a welfare point of view, CBIT or ACE, is shown to depend on assumptions about production technology and entry.
