    This paper contributes to recent revisions to the English School (ES) which have sought to redress its Eurocentrism. It argues that, despite providing necessary accounts of non-Western international societies and the agency of non-European polities in the expansion of global international society, there remains a gap in capturing the agency of postcolonial states in contributing to order negotiation and management in contemporary international order. It proposes a social role negotiation framework to address the gap, which it situates within a holistic conceptual framework that supplements an ES understanding of international order between states with a world-system perspective on how states are embedded within global capitalism, and a neo-Gramscian focus on social forces as the key agents contesting and shaping states' foreign policy orientation. It highlights two major types of postcolonial state agency within international order: contesting and limiting great powers' legitimate exercise of power; and establishing responsibilities towards building and managing order vis-a-vis great powers. The paper illustrates the utility of the social roles framework with the example of ASEAN in Southeast Asian and Asia-Pacific order.

    Contemporary narrative repositories of religious traditions are often the ambiguous product of dialogic oral transmissions that occurred over many years, undergoing variation based on audience, context, or ideological purpose. Through an application of remix theory, both official and unauthorized narrative developments among the sacred stories of religious traditions can be understood as sampling processes in which select elements are sourced from archival spaces of narrative data in the creation of unique versions for the contexts in which they emerge. This is specifically demonstrated through Osamu Tezuka’s Buddha manga series, but the questions it raises and the conceptual challenges it presents for doctrinal notions of authority and authenticity are also relevant outside the immediate context of Buddhism for the canonical traditions within other religious systems. Thus, this article demonstrates how remix theory can be utilized to better challenge the ways such concepts are understood and taken for granted in religious traditions.

    Scholarly interest in radical Islam is long-standing and crosses multiple disciplines. Yet, while the labelling of Islam and Muslim actors as ‘radical’ is extensive, this has not been interrogated as a particular scholarly practice. And while studies of non-Western radicalism have grown in recent years, cross-cultural analysis of radicalism as a particular concept in political thought has been neglected. This article aims to begin to address this question, with reference to radical Islam. By treating radicalism as a meta-concept, it identifies radical Islam as a malleable and composite category that is constituted by, and made legible through, conceptual properties associated with four discourses in the study of radicalism with origins in the Western academy: Euro-radicalism, identified with the European left and critical theory; fundamentalism; radicalisation; and liberalism. I argue that radical Islam is under-theorised and over-determined as a scholarly category. This can be explained by how concepts originating in the Western academy to address Western contexts and phenomena function as master frameworks, narratives, or pivots against or around which radical Islam is defined. This is the case even when Eurocentrism is contested by critical theorists who tend to reproduce it because they do not abandon Western conceptions of radicalism but rather draw on them. Academic accounts of radical Islam also authenticate Islam by advancing selective, strategic or apologetic descriptions of what constitutes radicalism. In these ways, critical scholarship, including within IR, can also be insufficiently attentive to marginal and heterodox voices that fall outside hegemonic conceptions of Islamic normativity.

    Recently, more attention has been paid to the theology of the different LXX books. In order to examine whether the LXX books attest a different theology than their Hebrew counterparts, I have recently analysed the theology of Proverbs LXX by means of a new approach: the analysis of the additional attestations of ὁ θεός and ὁ κύριος without any counterpart in MT. Since this approach focuses on the explicit differences between MT and the LXX, the analysis of these additional attestations might elicit a specific theology. In this paper I will analyse the additional attestations of ὁ θεός and ὁ κύριος in Job LXX in order to examine whether or not the Greek version attests a different theology than the Hebrew version. Moreover, the results of this analysis will also be compared with the results on Proverbs LXX in order to provide an indicative answer to the question whether both books were translated by the same translator.

The “pull” toward mechanisms, institutions, and structures as a means of delivering justice has led to certain kinds of knowledge being recognized as “transitional justice research” in the mainstream. Drawing on the theory of epistemic positioning, we reveal how hierarchies of academic knowledge and the dominant “ways of knowing” in and of transitional justice are created. Through citation analysis, we reveal an emerging canon, a central body of valuable and seemingly “inevitable” knowledge of transitional justice consisting primarily of structure and outcome-oriented inquiries in the disciplines of politics, international relations, and law and consolidating a standardized model of how to “do” transitional justice. We argue that this canonization comes at the expenses of alternative approaches that challenge the core assumptions of the field. Inquiries that prioritize agency or process and reimagine what transitional justice could be remain bounded to their disciplines and subfields. We demonstrate how certain anxieties about the survival of the field result in policing of the boundaries of the field, creating hierarchies of “valuable” knowledge, and resisting the “decolonizing” impulse.

    As international relations has started to grapple with its geo-cultural parochialism, the focus has been on its “Western-centrism” and on how “non-Western” international relations might be different. This article argues that attempts to deprovincialize “Western” (i.e., Euro-American) international thought do not always revolve around “non-Westernness,” a negation with often cultural-civilizational connotations, but also deploy a North/South worlding that is more bound up with imperial-colonial experience and a “peripheral” concern with economic insertion into the core. Based on interviews with scholars, diplomats, and foreign policy intellectuals in Brazil, the paper explores the different ways “the South” is deployed—as (post)colonial subjectivity, as problematique, as relation, as outside, and as political move—to provide an alternative intervention into the debate on “Global IR.” A medida que las relaciones internacionales comenzaron a lidiar con su parroquialismo geocultural, el enfoque se centró en su «centrismo occidental» y en cómo las relaciones internacionales «no occidentales» podrían ser diferentes. Este artículo argumenta que los intentos de desprovincializar el pensamiento internacional «occidental» (es decir, euroamericano) no siempre giran en torno a la «no occidentalidad», una negación con connotaciones a menudo culturales y civilizacionales, sino que también instalan un mundo norte/sur más ligado a la experiencia imperial-colonial y una inquietud «periférica» con la inserción económica en el núcleo. Realizado en base a entrevistas con académicos, diplomáticos e intelectuales de política exterior en Brasil, este artículo analiza las diferentes maneras en que se despliega «el Sur», como subjetividad (pos)colonial, como problemática, como relación, como externo y como movimiento político, para proporcionar una intervención alternativa en el debate sobre las relaciones internacionales globales o «Global IR». Alors que les relations internationales commencent à se débattre avec leur parochialisme géo-culturel, l'attention a été attirée sur leur «occidentalocentrisme» et la manière dont des relations internationales «non-occidentales» peuvent différer. Cet article soutient que les tentatives de déprovincialiser la pensée internationale «occidentale» (c'est-à-dire, euro-américaine) ne consistent pas uniquement à «désoccidentaliser» les relations, une négation aux connotations souvent culturelles et civilisationnelles, mais également à déployer une vision du monde ne reposant plus sur la séparation Nord/Sud—davantage liée à l'expérience impériale et coloniale—et à intégrer les pays «périphériques» dans les pays dits «avancés» via la croissance économique. S'appuyant sur des entretiens avec des experts, des diplomates et des intellectuels en politique étrangère au Brésil, cet article présente les différentes manières dont «le Sud» est considéré : en tant que subjectivité (post)coloniale, en tant que problématique, en tant que relation, en tant qu'acteur extérieur et en tant que mouvement politique, afin de fournir une intervention alternative dans le débat sur les «RI mondiales».

    The international politics of climate change invokes the imagination of various potential global futures, ranging from techno-optimist visions of ecological modernisation to apocalyptic nightmares of climate chaos. This article argues that most dominant framings of the future in climate policy imaginaries tend to be depoliticised and linear visions of universal, homogenous time, with little spatio-temporal or ecological plurality. This article aims to convince IR scholars of climate politics that Africanfuturist climate fiction novels can contribute to the decolonisation of climate politics through radically different socio-climatic imaginaries to those that dominate mainstream imaginations of climate futures. The Africanfuturist climate fiction novels of authors such as Nnedi Okorafor, Lauren Beukes and Doris Lessing imagine different spaces, temporalities, ecologies and politics. Reading them as climate theory, they offer the possibility of a more decolonised climate politics, in which issues of land and climate justice, loss and damage, extractive political economies and the racialised and gendered violence of capitalism are central.
