Sie traten ihre Reise unter äquivalenten Vorannahmen und gleichartigem Vorwissen an und vermittelten in ihren Reiseberichten ein ambivalentes Bild Schottlands, das zwischen unzivilisierten Bewohnern und glorifizierenden Darstellungen des Landes schwankte. eng: Until the end of the 18th century Scotland was a nearly unknown border region of Europe and was regarded as an uncivilized country, which hardly anybody wanted to visit out of pleasure. Today the country is celebrated as the land of kilts, whisky and for its heroic past. This image of Scotland was invented at the beginning of the 19th century, which among other things, is due to the fiction of Walter Scott. The travel accounts by Dorothy Wordsworth and Emilie von Berlepsch an English and a German writer which are based on real journeys to Scotland, were analyzed to see if today?s image of Scotland already existed around 1800. The travel accounts give an insight into the perception and representation of the country around 1800 and show that today?s stereotypical image of Scotland was not yet spread, although the illustrations already indicate a tendency towards a glorified view of Scottish history and Highland culture. The analysis is based on theoretical knowledge about the characteristics of travel literature and travelling itself around 1800, including background information of the travelers themselves. The data reveals that the perception and representation of Scotland does not differ between the English and German perspective. On the contrary both women had equivalent assumptions and prior knowledge before traveling to Scotland and provide in their writings a similarly ambivalent image, whose perception varies between an uncivilized country and glorified depiction of Scotland at this time.

For the Europeans the secrets of the Orient were mysterious and the reason for many speculations. In the course of years the fantasies and myths increased. These were later put down in numerous pictures, books and stories. Therefore, many people travelled in foreign countries to see the beauty and myths on their own. Another interesting thing for the Europeans was the Harem. There were many speculations because of it. This way of living together was one of the most discussed things relating to the Orient. The Harem was also a reason for male-erotic fantasies. The society of the west connected it with the male power about women and saw it as a sexual free place. Furthermore, was this way of living with each other very special. To share experiences with their family and other people of their culture many travellers wrote them down in form of reports. One of these travellers was Ida Hahn-Hahn. She wrote letters to her relations and acquaintances. These letters were collected and published by her in 1844. Ida Hahn-Hahn was very interested in different cultures and people. She often wrote about the women and her experiences which she had made with them. She also travelled with a measure of expectations and imaginations to the Orient and created her own perception of an Ottoman woman. Ida Hahn-Hahn?s self-perception characterized the image, which she had of the Orientals. She saw herself as an independent, strong and free woman. Therefore, she judged inactivity, laziness and bondage. She could not understand why education and freedom have not had a meaning to the Orientals. In fact of this she created a negative perception of them. Not only their look, but also their way of living was characterized by this imagination.

During the early modern period, western Europe was transformed by the proliferation of new worlds—geographic worlds found in the voyages of discovery and conceptual and celestial worlds opened by natural philosophy, or science. The response to incredible overseas encounters and to the profound technological, religious, economic, and intellectual changes occurring in Europe was one of nearly overwhelming wonder, expressed in a rich variety of texts. In the need to manage this wonder, to harness this imaginative overabundance, Mary Baine Campbell finds both the sensational beauty of early scientific works and the beginnings of the divergence of the sciences—particularly geography, astronomy, and anthropology—from the writing of fiction. Campbell's learned and brilliantly perceptive new book analyzes a cross section of texts in which worlds were made and unmade; these texts include cosmographies, colonial reports, works of natural philosophy and natural history, fantastic voyages, exotic fictions, and confessions. Among the authors she discusses are André Thevet, Thomas Hariot, Francis Bacon, Galileo, Margaret Cavendish, and Aphra Behn. Campbell's emphasis is on developments in England and France, but she considers works in languages other than English or French which were well known in the polyglot book culture of the time. With over thirty well-chosen illustrations, Wonder and Science enhances our understanding of the culture of early modern Europe, the history of science, and the development of literary forms, including the novel and ethnography

In a nation struggling to establish its own identity, all kinds of Americans, for all kinds of reasons, were enchanted with Europe. A European trip, whether extravagant or modest, could serve social advancement, aesthetic enrichment, or personal curiosity. Travel allowed men and women, the descendants of European settlers or African slaves, to shed their familiar surroundings and comfortable personas, adopt new roles, and measure themselves against the European experience. These travelers were often also writers. Throughout the nineteenth century, celebrated authors and beginners alike published newspaper columns, magazine articles, guidebooks, travel essays, letters, and novels based on their European journeys. In Going Abroad, Stowe examines not only classic works by such writers as Irving, Fuller, Twain, James, and Adams, but also lesser-known works by African-American authors, journalists, feminist writers, and diarists. Travel and the writing of it were important, Stowe argues, in molding a peculiarly democratic, yet essentially class-based, sense of personal and group identity. Combining literary and cultural analysis, he suggests new ways of understanding nineteenth-century Americans' concept of their nation and its place in the world.Originally published in 1994.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Surveying exotic travel writing in Europe from late antiquity to the age of discover, The Witness and the Other World illustrates the fundamental human desire to change places, if only in the imagination.Mary B. Campbell looks at works by pilgrims, crusaders, merchants, discoverers, even armchair fantasists such as Mandeville, as well as the writings of Marco Polo, Columbus, and Walter Raleigh. According to Campbell, these travel accounts are exotic because they bear witness to alienated experiences; European travelers, while claiming to relate fact, were often passing on monstrous projections. She contends that their writing not only documented but also made possible the conquest of the peoples whom she travelers described, and she shows how travel literature contributed to the genesis of the modern novel and the modern life sciences
