    "Transference of orientalist images and identities to the American landscape and its inhabitants, especially in the West-in other words, portrayal of the West as the 'Orient'--has been a common aspect of American cultural history. Place names, such as the Jordan River or Pyramid Lake, offer notable examples, but the imagery and its varied meanings are more widespread and significant. Understanding that range and significance, especially to the western part of the continent, means coming to terms with the complicated, nuanced ideas of the Orient and of the North American continent that European Americans brought to the West. Such complexity is what historical geographer Richard Francaviglia unravels in this book. Since the publication of Edward Said's book, Orientalism, the term has come to signify something one-dimensionally negative. In essence, the orientalist vision was an ethnocentric characterization of the peoples of Asia (and Africa and the 'Near East') as exotic, primitive 'others' subject to conquest by the nations of Europe. That now well-established point, which expresses a postcolonial perspective, is critical, but Francaviglia suggest that it overlooks much variation and complexity in the views of historical actors and writers, many of whom thought of western places in terms of an idealized and romanticized Orient. It likewise neglects positive images and interpretations to focus on those of a decadent and ostensibly inferior East. We cannot understand well or fully what the pervasive orientalism found in western cultural history meant, says Francaviglia, if we focus only on its role as an intellectual engine for European imperialism. It did play that role as well in the American West. One only need think about characterizations of American Indians as Bedouins of the Plains destined for displacement by a settled frontier. Other roles for orientalism, though, from romantic to commercial ones, were also widely in play. In Go East, Young Man, Francaviglia explores a broad range of orientalist images deployed in the context of European settlement of the American West, and he unfolds their multiple significances"--Provided by publisher

    In recent years a debate has arisen on the applicability of postcolonial theory to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Some have argued that Austria-Hungary's lack of overseas territories renders the concepts of colonialism and postcolonialism irrelevant, while others have cited the quasi-colonial attitudes of the Viennese elite towards the various 'subject peoples' of the empire as a point of comparison. 'Imperial Messages' applies postcolonial theory to works of orientalist fiction by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Robert Musil, and Franz Kafka, all subjects of the empire, challenging Edward Said's notion that orientalism invariably acts in the ideological service of European colonialism. It argues that these Habsburg authors employ oriental motifs not to promulgate Western hegemony, but to engage in self-reflection and self-critique, including critique of the foundational concepts of orientalist discourse itself. By providing detailed textual analyses of canonical works of Austrian Modernism, including Hofmannsthal's 'Tale of the 672nd Night,' Musil's 'Young Törless,' and Kafka's 'In the Penal Colony,' the book not only offers new postcolonial readings of these Austrian works, but also shows how they question the conventional postcolonial and post-Saidian view of orientalism as a purely hegemonic discourse. Robert Lemon is Assistant Professor of German at the University of Oklahoma.

    "Transference of orientalist images and identities to the American landscape and its inhabitants, especially in the West-in other words, portrayal of the West as the 'Orient'--has been a common aspect of American cultural history. Place names, such as the Jordan River or Pyramid Lake, offer notable examples, but the imagery and its varied meanings are more widespread and significant. Understanding that range and significance, especially to the western part of the continent, means coming to terms with the complicated, nuanced ideas of the Orient and of the North American continent that European Americans brought to the West. Such complexity is what historical geographer Richard Francaviglia unravels in this book. Since the publication of Edward Said's book, Orientalism, the term has come to signify something one-dimensionally negative. In essence, the orientalist vision was an ethnocentric characterization of the peoples of Asia (and Africa and the 'Near East') as exotic, primitive 'others' subject to conquest by the nations of Europe. That now well-established point, which expresses a postcolonial perspective, is critical, but Francaviglia suggest that it overlooks much variation and complexity in the views of historical actors and writers, many of whom thought of western places in terms of an idealized and romanticized Orient. It likewise neglects positive images and interpretations to focus on those of a decadent and ostensibly inferior East. We cannot understand well or fully what the pervasive orientalism found in western cultural history meant, says Francaviglia, if we focus only on its role as an intellectual engine for European imperialism. It did play that role as well in the American West. One only need think about characterizations of American Indians as Bedouins of the Plains destined for displacement by a settled frontier. Other roles for orientalism, though, from romantic to commercial ones, were also widely in play. In Go East, Young Man, Francaviglia explores a broad range of orientalist images deployed in the context of European settlement of the American West, and he unfolds their multiple significances"--Provided by publisher

    In recent years a debate has arisen on the applicability of postcolonial theory to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Some have argued that Austria-Hungary's lack of overseas territories renders the concepts of colonialism and postcolonialism irrelevant, while others have cited the quasi-colonial attitudes of the Viennese elite towards the various 'subject peoples' of the empire as a point of comparison. 'Imperial Messages' applies postcolonial theory to works of orientalist fiction by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Robert Musil, and Franz Kafka, all subjects of the empire, challenging Edward Said's notion that orientalism invariably acts in the ideological service of European colonialism. It argues that these Habsburg authors employ oriental motifs not to promulgate Western hegemony, but to engage in self-reflection and self-critique, including critique of the foundational concepts of orientalist discourse itself. By providing detailed textual analyses of canonical works of Austrian Modernism, including Hofmannsthal's 'Tale of the 672nd Night,' Musil's 'Young Törless,' and Kafka's 'In the Penal Colony,' the book not only offers new postcolonial readings of these Austrian works, but also shows how they question the conventional postcolonial and post-Saidian view of orientalism as a purely hegemonic discourse.     ger: Von jeher übte der Orient große Faszination auf den Westen aus und manifestierte sich häufig in Form von Bildern aus Tausend und einer Nacht in der Imagination der Europäer. Die Unzufriedenheit über die wirtschaftliche und politische Stellung der Eigenkultur führte zur exotistischen Idealisierung von Fremdkulturen, was sich speziell in der Kunst und Literatur manifestierte. Dem Exotismus steht der Orientalismus in Edward Saids Sinne gegenüber, wonach der Orient zugunsten der westlichen Hegemonie als rückständig und defizitär abgewertet wird. Die vorliegende Masterarbeit behandelt die Darstellung des Orients in ausgewählten Werken von Anton Graf von Prokesch-Osten, Gräfin May Török von Szendrö, Barbara Frischmuth und Feridun Zaimoglu. Gemein ist den vier Autoren ein persönlicher Bezug zum orientalischen Kulturraum, der in seinen unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen einen kaleidoskopischen Blick auf den Orient gewährt. Die Jahrhunderte andauernde Majoritätsstellung Europas führte zu einer West-Ost-Verschiebung der hegemonialen Werte, wodurch junge, in Europa lebende Orientalen sich selbst als Menschen zweiter Klasse betrachten, während die westlichen Autoren und Autorinnen dem Rezipienten jeder für sich einen anderen Orient präsentieren. Dabei wird verdeutlicht, dass der Kulturraum Orient und orientalische Menschen einerseits im Sinne des Exotismus idealisiert, andererseits eurozentristisch betrachtet und degeneriert beschrieben werden, wodurch keinesfalls eine realistische Orientdarstellung entsteht, sondern viel mehr exotische Wunschvorstellungen und eurozentristische Abwertungsstrategien zum Ausdruck gebracht wurden. Der wahre Orient bleibt in den ausgewählten Werken trotz der unterschiedlichsten Annäherungsversuche weiterhin versteckt hinter seinem Schleier und somit eine Vorstellung aus Tausend und einer Nacht. eng: The Orient has always been exerting a truly unique fascination on the west. Quite often this manifested itself in the form of pictures from thousand and one night in the imagination of the Europeans. The discontent about the economic and political position of many cultures in Europe led to the exotic idealisation of a foreign culture, especially in the arts and literature. For example, Exoticism is facing Orientalism in Edward Said?s theses, in which the Orient was depreciated as out-of-date and deficit in favour of western hegemony. This master thesis deals with the representation of the Orient in well-chosen works of Anton Graf von Prokesch Osten, Gräfin May Török von Szendrö, Barbara Frischmuth and Feridun Zaimoglu. A personal relation to the cultural space ?Orient?, which grants a caleidoscopical view at the topic in its different aspects, is common to the four authors. The constant majority position of Europe led to a west-east relocation of the hegemonial values. From that point on young oriental people, who lived in Europe, considered themselves as individuals of ?second class?, whereas the western authors present the Orient from their individual point of view. According to that, the Orient is on the one hand completely idealized to the exotic extreme and on the other hand hegemonially degenerated. Therefore it is not possible to find a realistic portrayal of Orient but an exotic, sometimes too desirable imagination. Even devaluation strategies can be shown. In spite of the different approaches, in the chosen works the true Orient remains only as an image from thousand and one night, hidden behind a veil.
