    It is a commonly held view among historians of Greek literature that with the advent of Euripides the tragic structure, even the tragic outlook of Greek drama suffered a breakdown from which it never recovered. While there is much truth in this opinion, it has tended to put too much emphasis on ";Euripides the destroyer"; rather than ";Euripides the creator."; In this study the author's main purpose is to redress the balance and to discuss the structure and techniques of Euripidean drama in relation to its new and richly varied themes.The consistent dramatic form evolved by Aeschylus and Sophocles had grown out of their conception of tragedy as the resultant of the tension between the individual will and the universal order suggested in myth. For Euripides, who never fully accepted myth as the real basis of tragedy, alternate ways of using the traditional material became necessary, and the playwright continually changed his dramatic structure to suit the particular tragic idea he was seeking to express. Viewed in this way, Euripides' dramatic technique may be seen in positive as well as negative terms—as something other than the breakdown of structural technique and mythological insight under the overwhelming force of his ideas. Professor Conacher offers here a new view of Euripides as the first Greek dramatist properly to understand the world of myth, and so, in a sense, to stand a bit outside it. He shows how Euripides, far from being an impatient or incompetent craftsman, used traditional mth as a basis for inventing new forms in which to cast his perceptions of the sources of human tragedy.All the extant Euripidean drama is examined in this book; the result is an intelligent guide to the plays for all students of dramatic literature, as well as a convincing defence of Euripides the creator

    Ever since the rise of science and the scientific method in the seventeenth century, we have rejected mythology as the product of superstitious and primitive minds. Only now are we coming to a fuller appreciation of the nature and role of myth in human history. In these five lectures originally prepared for the CBC, Claude Lévi-Strauss, one of the world's greatest living thinkers, offers the insights of a lifetime spent interpreting myths and trying to discover their significance for human understanding. The lectures begin with a discussion of the historical split between mythology and science and the evidence that mythic levels of understanding are being reintegrated in our approach to knowledge. In an extension of his theme, Professosr Lévi-Strauss analyses what we have called 'primitive' thinking and discusses some universal features of human mythology. The final two lectures outline the functional relationship between mythology and history and the structural relationship between mythology and music. Combining history, anthropology, and philosophy, this book provides a broad and penetrating perspective on the contemporary western world

    Pedro Calderon de la Barca (1600-1681), one of the great dramatists of Spain's Golden Age, wrote a series of mythological spectacle plays for the Habsburg courts. Written when court spectacles were an instrument of monarchical absolutism, these later works by Calderon have often been dismissed by critics as servile flattery of the royalty or mere displays of dazzling showmanship. Margaret Rich Greer argues, however, that many of the playwright's court dramas not only explore human life and social organization, but also possess artistic unity and thematic complexity that make them landmarks in European dramatic history. Analyzing seven of these plays, she demonstrates Calderon's mastery in the integration of music, dance, elaborate scenery, and stage machinery to enhance rather than overpower his poetic text.     Das Interesse am Mythos ist aus der europäischen Kultur- und Literaturgeschichte nicht wegzudenken. Es hat seinen Niederschlag in einer beinahe unüberschaubaren Vielzahl wissenschaftlicher Mythostheorien sowie in einer vielgestaltigen literarischen und künstlerischen Mythenrezeption gefunden. Dass dieses Interesse dabei nicht zuletzt dem Mythos als Zeugnis des Fremden gilt, ist die zentrale These der Studie. Mit dem neu eingeführten Begriff der mythologischen Alterität soll in diesem Sinne eine – bislang in ihrer Bedeutung sowie in ihrer Produktivität unterschätzte – Konstante im neuzeitlichen Mythosverständnis bzw. eine Gemeinsamkeit verschiedener Mythosauffassungen in den Fokus gerückt werden. So wird zum einen gezeigt, dass zahlreiche Theorien des Mythos (von Giambattista Vico und David Hume bis zu René Girard und Hans Blumenberg) ihre Gegenstände als Zeugnisse des kulturell oder auch des radikal Fremden beschreiben und interpretieren. Zum anderen wird anhand verschiedenartiger Beispiele aus der englischen Literatur vom 19. bis zum frühen 21. Jahrhundert erläutert, inwiefern auch in der literarischen Mythenrezeption das Fremde bzw. Differenzen von Eigenem und Fremdem thematisch und formal virulent werden

    Der Essay des emeritierten Bochumer Philosophiehistorikers und Doyens der mittelalterlichen Geschichte der Philosophie Kurt Flasch (zuletzt "Der Teufel und seine Engel") über den Mythos von Adam und Eva, dessen inzwischen vergriffenen ersten beiden Auflagen bereits 2004 und 2005 in Klappenbroschur erschienen sind (hier nicht besprochen), in einer gliederungsmäi︢g und inhaltlich unveränderten fest gebundenen Ausgabe. Mit vorrangigem Blick auf Eva verfolgt Flasch die Interpretationen und Ausformungen dieser überlieferten Paradieserzählung in exemplarischen Texten, Bildern und Skulpturen von den Anfängen im Alten Testament bis in die Neuzeit. Einige, überwiegend farbige Abbildungen mittlerer Qualität veranschaulichen die Ausführungen. Im Anhang Anmerkungen mit Literaturhinweisen. - Ein "opulenter philologischer Meta-Kommentar zur Geschichte der Kommentare des Paradiesmythos" ("Neue Zürcher Zeitung"), ansprechend ediert, flüssig geschrieben und amüsant zu lesen. Eine Kaufentscheidung sollte in Abhängigkeit vom äusseren Zustand eventuell im Bestand vorhandener Vorauflagen getroffen werden
