    In 1492 the Spanish humanist Antonio de Nebrija proclaimed that "language has always been the companion of empire." Taking as his touchstone a wonderfully suggestive sonnet that Garcilaso de la Vega wrote in 1535 from the neighborhood of ruined Carthage in North Africa, Richard Helgerson examines how the companionship of language and empire played itself out more generally in the "new poetry" of sixteenth-century Europe. Along with his friend Juan Boscán, Garcilaso was one of the great pioneers of that poetry, radically reforming Spanish verse in imitation of modern Italian and ancient Roman models. As the century progressed, similar projects were undertaken in France by Ronsard and du Bellay, in Portugal by Camões, and in England by Sidney and Spenser. And wherever the new poetry emerged, it was prompted by a sense that imperial ambition—the quest to be in the present what Rome had been in the past—required a vernacular poetry comparable to the poetry of Rome.But, as Helgerson shows, the new poetry had other commitments than to empire. Though imperial ambition looms large in Garcilaso's sonnet and others, by the end of the poem Garcilaso identifies not with Rome but with the Carthaginian queen Dido, one of empire's legendary victims. And with this startling shift, which has its counterpart in poems from all over Europe, comes one of the most important departures the poem makes from its apparent imperial agenda.Addressing these rival concerns as they arise in a single sonnet, Richard Helgerson provides a masterful and multifaceted image of one of the most vital episodes in European literary history

    In Lyric Orientations, Hannah Vandegrift Eldridge explores the power of lyric poetry to stir the social and emotional lives of human beings in the face of the ineffable nature of our mortality. She focuses on two German-speaking masters of lyric prose and poetry: Friedrich Hölderlin (1770–1843) and Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926). While Hölderlin and Rilke are stylistically very different, each believes in the power of poetic language to orient us as social beings in contexts that otherwise can be alienating. They likewise share the conviction that such alienation cannot be overcome once and for all in any universal event. Both argue that to deny the uncertainty created by the absence of any such event (or to deny the alienation itself) is likewise to deny the particularly human condition of uncertainty and mortality. By drawing on the work of Stanley Cavell, who explores how language in all its formal aspects actually enables us to engage meaningfully with the world, Eldridge challenges poststructuralist scholarship, which stresses the limitations—even the failure—of language in the face of reality. Eldridge provides detailed readings of Hölderlin and Rilke and positions them in a broader narrative of modernity that helps make sense of their difficult and occasionally contradictory self-characterizations. Her account of the orienting and engaging capabilities of language reconciles the extraordinarily ambitious claims that Hölderlin and Rilke make for poetry—that it can create political communities, that it can change how humans relate to death, and that it can unite the sensual and intellectual components of human subjectivity—and the often difficult, fragmented, or hermetic nature of their individual poems

    Bemerkung(en):

    In this interpretative analysis of the poetry of Rimbaud, Robert Greer Cohn first introduces the reader to the work of Rimbaud and outlines the poet's precocious, meteoric career. He then integrates the various aspects of the poetry into a coherent view, one which avoids a tendentious or reductive approach and does not fit some of the poems into a system and omit the rest. The early poems are given their due importance, and the difficult Illuminations are at last made accessible.This will be the standard book on the subject, one which will long be read and consulted by teachers and students of Rimbaud's poetry. It provides analyses of key passages of the poems, with detailed clarifications of difficult lines and even words. The author reaches many sound fresh conclusions, often by confronting resistant passages with similar ones from other works or with the work of other poets close to him in spirit.This is an intelligent and serious book which faces the direct beauty of the text and tries with honesty to explain all the difficulties while further enhancing the reader's sense of mystery.Originally published in 1974.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905

    The book presents methods for the objective analysis of poetic language. Only those properties of poetic texts are taken into account that could be quantified. For all methods both statistical tests, theoretical derivations, and examples are presented. --

    "The Cambridge Companion to Modern American Poetry comprises original essays by eighteen distinguished scholars. It offers a critical overview of major and emerging American poets of the twentieth century, in addition to critical accounts of the representative schools, movements, regional settings, archival resources, and critical reception that define modern American poetry. The Companion stretches the narrow term of 'literary modernism' - which encompasses works published from approximately 1890 to 1945 - to include a more capacious and usable account of American poetry's evolution from the twentieth century to the present. The essays collected here seek to account for modern American verse against the contexts of broad political, social, and cultural fields and forces. This volume gathers together major voices that represent the best in contemporary critical approaches and methods"..

    Nach Dante ist die volkssprachliche Dichtung nur erfunden worden, um von der Liebe zu sprechen. Allegorisch entwerfen Italiens Dichter seit dem 13. Jahrhundert einen neuen spirituellen Raum, der vom göttlichen Unsichtbaren und von intellektueller Erkenntnis gleichermaßen geschieden ist und sich in der Lektüre weiter ausbildet. Die Studie verfolgt eine neue Dimension menschlicher Geistigkeit vom 13. bis 16. Jahrhundert. Der Bogen spannt sich von den bedeutendsten italienischen Dichtern des Mittelalters hin zu Petrarca, über den Florentiner Neuplatonismus bis zu Bruno. Beleuchtet werden die Referenzfelder, vor denen sich der innovative poetische Entwurf abzeichnet. Die Gedichte integrieren Theoreme der Theologie, Philosophie und Rhetorik, Formen religiöser Andachtspraxis und aktuelle Modelle der Erkenntnis-, Bild- und Zeichentheorie. Zwischen Adaption und Abgrenzung tritt die selbstbewusste Positionierung der vormodernen Dichtung hervor.

    ""Objectivist"" writers, conjoined through a variety of personal, ideological, and literary-historical links, have, from the late 1920s to the present, attracted emulation and suspicion. Representing a nonsymbolist, postimagist poetics and characterized by a historical, realist, antimythological worldview, Objectivists have retained their outsider status. Despite such status, however, the formal, intellectual, ideological, and ethical concerns of the Objectivist nexus have increasingly influenced poetry and poetics in the United States.Thus, argue editors Rachel Blau DuPlessis and Peter Quarte...
