    Das Buch spürt den kognitiven Wandlungen nach, denen das Dichtungsverständnis seit dem Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts unterliegt. Die Auseinandersetzung mit der antiken Literatur ist durch die Entwicklung einer philologischen Kritik bestimmt worden, die in einem spannungsreichen Verhältnis zur christlichen Apologetik im konfessionellen Dissenz der Zeit stand. "Moderne" Dichtung von Opitz bis Brockes erscheint so als integraler Teil einer viel umfassenderen Gelehrtenkultur. Der Autor vermittelt ein anschauliches Bild von der Einheit und den Spannungen, den sozialen und intellektuellen Konstanten und Verwerfungen innerhalb der europäischen respublica litteraria der frühen Neuzeit The volume traces the cognitive changes to which the understanding of literature was exposed from the late 16th century onwards. Engagement with the literature of antiquity was determined by the development of a philological form of criticism that was at odds with Christian apologetics in a time of confessional dissension. Seen thus, 'modern' literature from Opitz to Brockes appears as an integral part of a much more comprehensive culture of scholarly endeavour.     Das Problemfeld ‚Literarische Kommunikation‘ zeichnet sich durch eine große Komplexität und Spannbreite aus. Die Literaturwissenschaft hat darauf bislang häufig mit reduktionistischer Modellbildung reagiert. Der Sammelband zeigt den Facettenreichtum literarischer Kommunikationsprozesse auf, indem er Einzelstudien zu deren historischer Transformation vom 18. bis ins frühe 21. Jahrhundert präsentiert. Das Augenmerk gilt unterschiedlichen Medien und intermedialen Konstellationen sowie Fragen der Wertung und der Emotionalisierung. Einen Schwerpunkt bildet die Literaturkritik von Goethe bis zur Gegenwart. Gefragt wird zudem nach der Korrelation von literarischer Kommunikation und Ökonomie, nach kulturpoetischen Kontextualisierungsmodellen, dem Verhältnis von Literatur und Film sowie nach Lern- und Bildungsprozessen. Eine besondere Herausforderung stellt die Untersuchung literarischer Kommunikationsprozesse dar, die sich auf Antisemitismus und Krieg beziehen. Entscheidend für das Thema ist schließlich der Aktualitäts- und Praxisbezug; er äußert sich insbesondere darin, dass neben Literatur- und KulturwissenschaftlerInnen auch AkteurInnen aus Feuilleton und Hypertextliteratur zu Wort kommen

    Main description: The volume traces the cognitive changes to which the understanding of literature was exposed from the late 16th century onwards. Engagement with the literature of antiquity was determined by the development of a philological form of criticism that was at odds with Christian apologetics in a time of confessional dissension. The authors propose an innovative method by which anyone involved in the assessment of poetry can be more transparent about how they value verse. This book foregrounds the ethical and professional obligations of poets, teachers and critics to conduct axiological inquiry so they can discover and publish what they value. We Need to Talk suggests why and how people who care about poetry should communally explore and document their shared (and conflicting) values.     "At the intersection of social and environmental history there has emerged a rich body of black literary response to natural and agricultural experiences, whether the legacy of enforced agricultural labor or of the destruction and displacement brought about by a hurricane. In Cultivation and Catastrophe, Sonya Posmentier uncovers a vivid diasporic tradition of black environmental writing that responds to the aftermath of plantation slavery, urbanization, and free and forced migrations. While humanist discourses of African American and postcolonial studies often sustain a line between nature and culture, this book instead emphasizes the relationship between them, offering an innovative environmental history of modern black literature. Posmentier argues that environmental experiences of growth and rupture define the literature of black freedom, an archive that ranges from sonnets, mini-epics, documentary poems, periodicals, and novels to blues songs, dancehall productions, and ethnographic writing. In turn, this literature generates important and surprising models for ecological thought. Claude McKay, for example, connects rows of potatoes to the poetic line; Zora Neale Hurston composes rhythmic communal lyrics in the Florida "muck" following a deadly hurricane; and Derek Walcott critiques property-based ecological relations through the archipelagic shape of his mid-career poetry. Posmentier examines how these writers, along with Gwendolyn Brooks, Bessie Smith, Sterling Brown, Lloyd Lovindeer, Kamau Brathwaite, and others give voice to racialized experiences of alienation from the land while simultaneously envisioning a modern poetics of survival, repair, and generation. Going against the grain of scholarship that has situated modern black diasporic agency largely in metropolitan sites, Posmentier traces a black literary history of environmental and social disaster while exploring the possibilities and limits of poetry as an archive for black modern culture in its many forms.
