    Abstract ; Im ersten Teil des Beitrags wird eine Zusammenführung der Begriffe »Utopie« und »Biopolitik« aus historischer und theoretischer Perspektive versucht. Es werden zudem zwei Begriff eingeführt, die »Heterotopie« und die »Figur des Dritten«, anhand derer im zweiten Teil gezeigt wird, wie es aktuellen Utopien / Dystopien gelingt, die eigene Zeit nicht nur kritisch zu beleuchten, sondern auch positives Zukunftspotenzial freizulegen. Im Mittelpunkt des zweiten Teils steht eine Auswahl von Texten, die als beispielhaft für das in den letzten Jahren im Norden populäre Genre des utopischen / dystopischen Romans verstanden werden kann, und anhand derer deutlich wird, welche Rolle Biopolitik in dieser Gattung spielt. ; Abstract ; In the first part of this article the concept of utopia and the field of bio-politics are brought together from a historical and a theoretical perspective. In addition to that, two terms are discussed: »heterotopia« and »the figure of the third«. With help of these terms, it is possible to show how recent utopian / dystopian literature succeeds not only to criticise its own time but also to reveal a positive potential for the future. In the second part I focus on a choice of texts which can be seen as good examples for the genre of utopia / dystopia that is popular in recent Nordic literature. Furthermore, these texts are useful in giving an impression of the relevance of bio-politics for this literary genre.

    Perennialist or Guénonian Traditionalism is a global esoteric movement that is found in South America as it is in North America and Europe. Its major religious form, which is Sufi, is also found in South America, as is its major political form, which is on the Right. This article investigates what further impact Traditionalism has had in South America and finds that this has been primarily in Argentina’s literary and artistic milieu during the 1920s to 1940s and among philosophers and anthropologists in Argentina and Peru from the 1950s until today. The literary impact in Argentina is comparable to that which Traditionalism had in France at the same time but is more significant, perhaps because the period is so important for Spanish American literature. The academic impact in Argentina and Peru is comparable to the impact that Traditionalism had in the USA, at the same time, but differs in its disciplinary profile and religious forms. In the USA Traditionalists are found in departments of religious studies and Islamology and are often Sufis. In Argentina and Peru, there are few Sufis and more alternative religious forms. The difference, it is suggested, may reflect the special status of indigenous peoples in Peru, the historic strength of the Gurdjieff movement throughout Latin America, and differences in the structure of South American and North American universities.

    Es gibt zwei ganz verschiedene mögliche Herangehensweisen, was die Unveränderlichkeit des Schicksals betrifft. Die eine ist, es als unausweichlich zu betrachten, so daß jede Vorhersage nichts weiter kann, als die Menschen darauf vorzubereiten, was sie erwartet. Die andere besteht darin, durch Gebete und Ritual die Götter zu einer Änderung zu bewegen, insbesondere drohende Schäden zu verhindern. In diesem Artikel werden divinatorische, literarische und religiöse Texte aus dem späten Ägypten daraufhin untersucht, wie die Ägypter in dieser Zeit das Schicksal verstanden haben. Die Quellen zeigen deutlich, daß man von den Göttern meinte, sie ständen oberhalb des Schicksals, und es sei möglich, schlechte Vorhersagen abzuwenden. There are two quite different approaches possible concerning the unchangeability of destiny. One is to see it as ineluctable, so that any prediction can do no more good than to prepare the man for what is coming. The other one is that prayers or rituals can induce the gods to change it, especially to repeal bad outcomes. In this article, divinatory, literary and religious texts from Late Egypt are studied in order to how the Egyptians at this time vied destiny. The sources demonstrate clearly that the gods were considered to stand above destiny, and that it was thought possible to avert bad predictions.

    Memory is not only a biological capability but also a social practice of constructing the past, which is carried out by social communities (e.g., the nation state, the family, and the church). Since the 1980s, memory studies has intertwined the concept of cultural memory with national narratives of the past that are to legitimize the connection between state, territory, and people. In the present time of growing migratory movements, memory studies has abandoned this “methodological nationalism” and turned its attention towards dynamic constructions of cultural memory. Indeed, memories cross national and cultural borderlines in various ways. The cultural memory of the Jewish people, ever since its beginning, has been defined by mobility. As the exile and forty years of wandering in the wilderness preceded the Conquest of Canaan and the building of the temple, the cultural memory of the Jewish people has always been based on the principle of extraterritoriality. The caesura of the Holocaust altered this ancient form of mobility into a superimposed rediasporization of the assimilated Jews that turned the eternal longing for Jerusalem into a secularized longing for the fatherland. This article presents examples of German-Jewish literature that is concerned with the intersection between the original diaspora memory, rediasporization and longing for a return to the fatherland. I will analyze literary writings by Barbara Honigmann and Vladimir Verlib that in a paradigmatic manner navigate between memory of the Holocaust, exile and the mythological past of Judaism, and negotiate the question of belonging to diverse territorial and mobile mnemonic communities.

    J. J. Connington's 1923 British disaster novel Nordenholt's Million is an extreme, proto fascist work that responds to the interwar context of economic decline and social unrest in Britain. It utilises an apocalyptic scenario (soil denitrification) to draw an analogue of contemporary Britain and is uncompromising in its critique of conventional government systems and social decline. The novel depicts a situation where, to enable survival, the weak, dissenters and the unskilled are sacrificed in a drive towards creating a utopian future. Accordingly, in Nordenholt's Million the apocalypse is a transformative opportunity. It offers a wish fulfilment tale involving the emergence of strong, decisive leadership - based on many of the qualities of the Nietzchean Übermensch - to instigate a highly efficient, eugenically constructed ‘ideal' post-apocalyptic society. At the conclusion, a new civilisation emerges in which what the novel has framed as the social, political and economic problems of Britain have been overcome. Drawing upon Nietzchean ideas and the appeal of extreme politics, Nordenholt's Million tackles the morality of its politics by emphasising the necessity - and even desirability - of dictatorship in difficult circumstances. It presents dictatorship as the political solution to weak government and contemporary crises. Such a positive representation of dictatorship, even one apparently justified by catastrophe, could only have been written in a pre-World War II context. However, less than a century later, the extremes that the text presents as so appealing are echoed in in new social and political arenas informed by fear and discontent. Nordenholt's Million is then, a revealing and disconcerting novel that explores the appeal of fascism during periods of social and economic unease.
