    "The present volume is based on an international colloquium convened in 2010 to which scholars from North America and Europe contributed papers dealing with the historical, cultural, and literary connections between Canada and the American South. The essays on this broad but under-researched topic are arranged in four sections reflecting the multiple ties and the cultural circulation between the two large North American regions. They illuminate demographic facts and developments, and their literary representations, such as the enforced displacement of the 18th century Acadiens, who later reassembled in Louisiana (Cajun culture), and the flight of thousands of fugitive (African American) slaves to the safe haven of Canada. Special attention is focused on the intertextual links between Southern writers and their Canadian counterparts, with William Faulkner and Eudora Welty especially providing inspiration for Canadian authors such as Alice Munro, Jack Hodgins, and Margaret Atwood."--

    From a theoretical point of view the Russian literature is highly inspiring in its specific development from the Middle Ages to the present. Based on the research of literary theory and history in the broader context of Slavic languages and literatures the author outlines in several related studies the concept of the theory and history of Russian literature viewed from positions of comparative and genre studies in the background of several other Slavic and European literatures. As a natural part of Slavonic Studies this work follows current attempts to reinvent the theory and history of Slavic literatures. The text can also be seen as a preparatory study for designing comparative history of Russian literature and Slavic Literatures.

    Die kulturellen Beziehungen zwischen Polen und Russland standen im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert im Schatten schwieriger politischer Verhältnisse. Die Polen begegneten den Werken russischer Künstler aber nicht nur mit Skepsis, sondern waren von ihnen auch fasziniert. Am Beispiel der polnisch-russischen Literaturbeziehungen zwischen 1864-1904 werden in diesem Buch die ambivalenten Reaktionen polnischer Leser analysiert, die vom Aufruf zum Boykott bis zur gezielten Verbreitung russischer Literatur reichten. Indem es die Vielschichtigkeit der Rezeption in den Mittelpunkt stellt, ermöglicht das Buch einen neuen Blick auf die kulturellen und politischen Beziehungen beider Völker. Es wurde mit dem Ditze-Preis der Universität Hamburg für herausragende Dissertationen in den Geisteswissenschaften ausgezeichnet.

    Through increased immigration, Ireland has encountered Central and Eastern Europe in a very direct manner since the mid-1990s. However, there was already a scattered history of cultural communication between these two regions, even if these dialogues have often been discrete and discontinuous. Recovering and exploring some of these diverse interrelationships, this volume charts some of the alternative, lesser-known routes that Irish cultural life has taken. By plotting various movements between these two peripheries of Europe, the book recalibrates the map of Irish literary, artistic and historical experiences. In doing so, it also looks to incorporate this movement into theoretical understandings of Irish culture.

    This book proposes a new approach to the study of ancient Greek and Mesopotamian literature. Ranging from Homer and Gilgamesh to Herodotus and the Babylonian-Greek author Berossos, it paints a picture of two literary cultures that, over the course of time, became profoundly entwined. Along the way, the book addresses many questions of crucial importance to the student of the ancient world: how did the literature of Greece relate to that of its eastern neighbours? What did ancient readers from different cultures think it meant to be human? Who invented the writing of universal history as we know it? How did the Greeks come to divide the world into Greeks and 'barbarians', and what happened when they came to live alongside those 'barbarians' after the conquests of Alexander the Great? In addressing these questions, the book draws on cutting-edge research in comparative literature, postcolonial studies and archive theory.
