    What influence did René Descartes' concept of mind-body dualism have on early modern conceptions of the self? In The Matter of Mind, Christopher Braider challenges the presumed centrality of Descartes' groundbreaking theory to seventeenth-century French culture. He details the broad opposition to rational self-government among Descartes' contemporaries, and attributes conventional links between Descartes and the myth of the ‘modern subject’ to post-structuralist assessments.The Matter of Mind presents studies drawn from a range of disciplines and examines the paintings of Nicolas Poussin, the drama of Pierre Corneille, and the theology of Blaise Pascal. Braider argues that if early modern thought converged on a single model, then it was the experimental picture based on everyday experience proposed by Descartes' sceptical adversary, Michel de Montaigne. Forceful and provocative, The Matter of Mind will encourage lively debate on the norms and discourses of seventeenth-century philosophy

    Colonial Virtue is the first study to focus on the role played by the virtue of temperance in shaping ethical debates about early English colonialism. Kasey Evans tracks the migration of ideas surrounding temperance from classical and humanist writings through to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century applications, emphasizing the ways in which they have transcended the vocabularies of geography and time.Colonial Virtue offers fresh insights into how English Renaissance writers used temperance as a privileged lens through which to view New World morality and politically to justify colonial practices in Virginia and the West Indies. Evans uses literary texts, including The Fairie Queene and The Tempest, and sources such as sermons, dictionaries, and visual artifacts, to navigate alliances between traditional semantics and post-colonial political criticism. Beautifully written and deeply engaging, Colonial Virtue also models an expansive methodology for literary studies through its close readings and rhetorical analyses

    Who is a more authoritative source of information — the person who experiences it firsthand, or a more ‘impartial’ authority? In the late nineteenth century, testimony became a common feature of literary works both fact and fiction. But with the rise of new journalism, the power of testimony could be undermined by anonymous, institutional voices — a Victorian subversion which continues to this day. Testimony on Trial examines the conflicts over testimony through the eyes of two of its major combatants, Joseph Conrad and Henry James. Brian Artese finds an overlooked yet direct inspiration for Heart of Darkness in the anti-testimonial scheming of Henry Morton Stanley and the New York Herald. Through new readings of works including Lord Jim and The Portrait of a Lady, Artese demonstrates how the cultural conditions that worked against testimony fed into a nascent conflict about the meaning of modernism itself

    This unique study explores how Quebec's landscapes have been represented in both literature and visual art throughout the centuries, from the writing of early explorers such as Cartier and Champlain to work by prominent contemporary authors and artists from the province. William J. Berg traces recurrent images and themes within these creations through the most significant periods in the development of a Quebecois identity that was threatened initially by the wilderness and indigenous populations, and later by the dominance of British and American influences.Focusing on the interplay between nature and culture in landscape representation, Literature and Painting in Quebec contends that both have reflected and fashioned the meaning of French-Canadian nationhood. As such, Literature and Painting in Quebec presents a new perspective to approach the notion of national identity, a quest that few groups have engaged in more persistently than the Quebecois

    This landmark study explores the cultural and literary history of unemployment in Canada from the 1920s to the 1970s, which were crucial decades in the formation of our current conception of Canada as a nation. Writing Unemployment asks how writers with diverse political affiliations participated in and protested against the discursive framing of unemployment. It argues that Depression-era conceptions of unemployment shaped later twentieth-century understandings of both worklessness and citizenship.By examining novels, short stories, poetry, manifestos, and agitprop, Jody Mason situates the literary history of the cultural left in a broader context, challenges the dominant literary-historical narrative of the pioneer settler, and contributes to new scholarship on Canada’s modern period. By bridging close textual readings with book and publishing history, economic and sociological analysis, and original archival research, Writing Unemployment offers new ideas on work by many of Canada’s most important writers

    The first comprehensive study of Spanish writings on East and Southeast Asia from the Spanish colonial period, They Need Nothing draws attention to many essential but understudied Spanish-language texts from this era. Robert Richmond Ellis provides an engaging, interdisciplinary examination of how these writings depict Asia and Asians as both similar to and different from Europe and Europeans, and details how East and Southeast Asians reacted to the Spanish presence in Asia.They Need Nothing highlights texts related to Japan, China, Cambodia, and the Philippines, beginning with Francis Xavier’s observations of Japan in the mid-sixteenth century and ending with José Rizal’s responses to the legacy of Spanish colonialism in the late nineteenth century. Ellis provides a groundbreaking expansion of the geographical and cultural contours of Hispanism that bridges the fields of European, Latin American, and Asian Studies

    Collecting and displaying finely crafted objects was a mark of character among the royals and aristocrats in Early Modern Spain: it ranked with extravagant hospitality as a sign of nobility and with virtue as a token of princely power. Objects of Culture in the Literature of Imperial Spain explores how the writers of the period shared the same impulse to collect, arrange, and display objects, though in imagined settings, as literary artefacts.These essays examine a variety of cultural objects described or alluded to in books from the Golden Age of Spanish literature, including clothing, paintings, tapestries, playing cards, monuments, materials of war, and even enchanted bronze heads. The contributors emphasize how literature preserved and transformed objects to endow them with new meaning for aesthetic, social, religious, and political purposes – whether to perpetuate certain habits of thought and belief, or to challenge accepted social and moral norms

    In this original and innovative study, Scott T. Smith traces the intersections between land tenure and literature in Anglo-Saxon England. Smith aptly demonstrates that as land became property through the operations of writing, it came to assume a complex range of conceptual values that Anglo-Saxons could use to engage a number of vital cultural concerns beyond just the legal and practical – such as political dominion, salvation, sanctity, status, and social and spiritual obligations.Land and Book places a variety of texts – including charters, dispute records, heroic poetry, homilies, and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle – in a dynamic conversation with the procedures and documents of land tenure, showing how its social practice led to innovation across written genres in both Latin and Old English. Through this, Smith provides an interdisciplinary synthesis of literary, legal, and historical interests

    The latest work from pioneering scholar George Elliott Clarke, Directions Home is the most comprehensive analysis of African-Canadian texts and writers to date. Building on the discoveries of his critically acclaimed Odysseys Home, Clarke passionately analyses the beautiful complexities and haunting conundrums of this important body of literature.Directions Home explores the trajectories and tendencies of African-Canadian literature within the Canadian canon and the socio-cultural traditions of the African Diaspora. Clarke showcases the importance of little-known texts, including church histories and slave narratives, and offers studies of autobiography, crime and punishment, jazz poetics, and musical composition. The collection also includes studies of significant contemporary writers such as George Boyd and Dionne Brand, and trailblazing African-Canadian intellectuals like A.B. Walker and Anna Minerva Henderson. With its national, bilingual, and historical perspectives, Directions Home is an essential guide to African-Canadian literature

    England became a centrally important maritime power in the early modern period, and its writers – acutely aware of their inhabiting an island – often depicted the coastline as a major topic of their works. However, early modern English versifiers had to reconcile this reality with the classical tradition, in which the British Isles were seen as culturally remote compared to the centrally important Mediterranean of antiquity. This was a struggle for writers not only because they used the classical tradition to legitimate their authority, but also because this image dominated cognitive maps of the oceanic world.As the first study of coastlines and early modern English literature, Dire Straits investigates the tensions of the classical tradition’s isolation of the British Isles from the domain of poetry. By illustrating how early modern English writers created their works in the context of a longstanding cultural inheritance from antiquity, Elizabeth Jane Bellamy offers a new approach to the history of early modern cartography and its influences on literature

    The ancient Greek romances of Achilles Tatius and Heliodorus were widely imitated by early modern writers such as Miguel de Cervantes, Philip Sidney, and Mary Wroth. Like their Greek models, Renaissance romances used ekphrasis, or verbal descriptions of visual representation, as a tool for characterization. The Emblematics of the Self shows how the women, foreigners, and non-Christians of these tales reveal their identities and desires in their responses to the ‘verbal pictures’ of romance. Elizabeth B. Bearden illuminates how ‘verbal pictures’ enliven characterization in English, Spanish, and Neolatin romances from 1552 to 1621. She notes the capacity for change among characters — such as cross-dressed Amazons, shepherdish princesses, and white Mauritanians — who traverse transnational cultural and aesthetic environments. Engaging and rigorous, The Emblematics of the Self breaks new ground in understanding hegemonic and cosmopolitan European conceptions of the ‘other,’ as well as new possibilities for early modern identities, in an increasingly global Renaissance

    In 2002 a manga (comic book) was for the first time successfully charged with the crime of obscenity in the Japanese courts. In The Art of Censorship Kirsten Cather traces how this case represents the most recent in a long line of sensational landmark obscenity trials that have dotted the history of postwar Japan. The objects of these trials range from a highbrow literary translation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover and modern adaptations and reprintings of Edo-period pornographic literary "classics" by authors such as Nagai Kafu to soft core and hard core pornographic films, including a collection of still photographs and the script from Oshima Nagisa’s In the Realm of the Senses, as well as adult manga. At stake in each case was the establishment of a new hierarchy for law and culture, determining, in other words, to what extent the constitutional guarantee of free expression would extend to art, artist, and audience.The work draws on diverse sources, including trial transcripts and verdicts, literary and film theory, legal scholarship, and surrounding debates in artistic journals and the press. By combining a careful analysis of the legal cases with a detailed rendering of cultural, historical, and political contexts, Cather demonstrates how legal arguments are enmeshed in a broader web of cultural forces. She offers an original, interdisciplinary analysis that shows how art and law nurtured one another even as they clashed and demonstrates the dynamic relationship between culture and law, society and politics in postwar Japan.The Art of Censorship will appeal to those interested in literary and visual studies, censorship, and the recent field of affect studies. It will also find a broad readership among cultural historians of the postwar period and fans of the works and genres discussed

    The 1990s were a period of tremendous artistic vigour, experimentation, and liberation for Ukrainian culture. The artists who emerged at this time unleashed a tidal wave of creativity that deliberately and aggressively reshaped inherited models. In this first English monograph on contemporary Ukrainian literature, Mark Andryczyk provides an in-depth analysis of the cultural explosion that engulfed Ukraine in its first decade of independence. The Intellectual as Hero in 1990s Ukrainian Fiction weaves a fascinating narrative full of colourful characters by examining the prose of today's leading writers. Andryczyk delves into the role of the intellectual in forging a post-Soviet Ukrainian identity, and follows these protagonists as they soar and stumble in pursuit of redefining their creative realm. In addition to introducing readers to vibrant literary gems, this book explores the artistic tendencies that determined the course of the Ukrainian cultural scene in the 1990s, and continue to shape it today

    Bemerkung(en):

    In the Gospel according to Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, speakers are often interrupted by emotional audiences (Luke 4:28; Acts 4:1; 7:54-57; 13:48; etc.). A comparative study of other Greek authors, from Homer to Josephus, reveals the high frequency and unique form of interruption in Luke's two volumes. Intentional interruption functions rhetorically to underscore the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the availability of salvation to the Gentiles, thus illuminating both Lukan theology and literary technique

    Bemerkung(en):

    Das Nibelungenlied zählt zu den zentralen Texten der deutschen Literatur des Mittelalters. Es ist einer der wenigen, die sich auch im kulturellen Gedächtnis unserer Zeit noch behaupten können. Konsequenz ist, dass die Forschungsliteratur zum Nibelungenlied und allgemein zur Nibelungensage vom Einzelnen kaum noch zu überblicken ist. Diesem Umstand trägt das vorliegende Buch Rechnung, dessen Ziel die Sortierung und Ordnung dieser weitläufigen Forschungslandschaft in Form einer kommentierten Bibliographie zur Nibelungenforschung für die Jahre 1945-2010 ist. Die Publikationen sind in nach Jahrgängen sortierten bibliographischen Einträgen erfasst, werden in kurzen, zurückhaltend kritischen Referaten vorgestellt und nach diversen Kategorien verschlagwortet. Querverweise ziehen in das Geflecht von über 3.000 Einträgen kleinere oder auch große Linien ein und machen auf diese Weise forschungsgeschichtliche Strömungen und Paradigmenwechsel sichtbar

    Main description: Der Wandel traditioneller Familienstrukturen ist seit längerem Gegenstand intensiver öffentlicher Debatten. Daher überrascht es, dass interkulturelle Familienkonstellationen, wie sie für (post-)moderne Migrationsgesellschaften keineswegs untypisch sind, bislang nicht systematisch untersucht wurden. Hier setzt der Band an: Im Rekurs auf Aspekte literaturwissenschaftlicher, soziologischer und psychologischer Theoriebildung werden die Wechselwirkungen von kultureller Differenz und familiären Beziehungen erschlossen sowie vielfältige Formen ihrer ästhetischen Inszenierung in Gegenwart und Vergangenheit beleuchtet

    Review text: »Dieser Band [bildet] einen gelungenen Entwurf des ersten Versuches, interkulturelle Familienkonstellationen in einer immer stärker transkulturell denkenden und interkulturell handelnden Gesellschaft zu diskutieren. Der Aufsatzsammlung wünsche ich eine große Verbreitung mit einer fundierten und vor allem weiterführenden Kritik.« Hamid Reza Yousefi, Freiburger Zeitschrift für Geschlechterstudien, 19/1 (2013) »Der vorliegende Band ist eine längst fällige wissenschaftliche Reaktion auf die gesellschaftliche und politische Debatte der letzten Jahre zu Migration in Deutschland und ist sowohl literarisch Interessierten als auch allen, die sich über das Thema 'Familie' in der heutigen Gesellschaft informieren möchten, als eine inspirierende Lektüre empfohlen.« Natalia Shchyhlevska, Fachbuchjournal, 3 (2013) »Dieser interessante Band stellt einen bislang wenig beachteten Aspekt in den Mittelpunkt: interkulturelle Familienkonstellationen.« Thomas Bernhard, www.lehrerbibliothek.de, 25.07.2012 Besprochen in: www.via-bund.de, 4 (2012) BZgA_Infodienst Migration, 3 (2012) terra cognita, 21 (2012) IDA-NRW, 18/3 (2012)

    Main description: Die Erschließung des Kontextes der mittelalterlichen Predigt zielt auf die bestimmenden inner- und außerliterarischen Einflüsse, auf die Verwendung literarischer Formen und Typen, auf die Aufbereitung theologischer Inhalte für die Verkündigung, auf den Einfluß von Liturgie und Publikum, auf die Wechselwirkung zwischen Wort, Schrift und Bild und nicht zuletzt auf das spannungsreiche Verhältnis von Predigtpraxis und ihrem schriftlichen Niederschlag. Die Devotio moderna und die lateinische Predigt bilden eigene Schwerpunkte. Der Band enthält sieben bislang unpublizierte Predigten in teils kritischer Edition

    Main description: The examination of the context of medieval sermons essayed in this volume focuses on a variety of aspects: the dominant intra- and extra-literary influences, the use of literary forms and types, the adaptation of theological subject matter for proclamation from the pulpit, the influence of liturgy and audience (congregations), the interaction between word, writing and image, and not least the tensions operative in the relation between sermons in practice and their subsequent written forms. The Devotio moderna and sermons in Latin figure prominently in the overall layout. The volume also contains seven hitherto unpublished sermons, some of them in critical editions
