Jahrhundert untersucht (u. a.

The French in Macao in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries: Literary, Cultural, and Historical Perspectives investigates the role that Macao played as a meeting place of the East and the West during this period of time and its decline as a Portuguese colony in the eyes of the Europeans. The book provides a comprehensive view of representations of Macao as portrayed by the French. These texts in French have been studied less than Chinese or Portuguese texts on Macao. Overall, the book contributes to the study of colonial history, cultural studies, and China in the late Qing dynasty

This book discusses an archival turn in the work of contemporary Caribbean writers and visual artists across linguistic locations and whose work engages critically with various historical narratives and colonial and postcolonial records. This refiguration opens a critical space and retells stories and histories previously occluded in/by those records, and in spaces of the public sphere. Through poetics and aesthetics of fragmentation largely influenced by music and popular culture, their work encourages contrapuntal ways of (re)thinking histories; ways that interrogate the influence of colonial narratives in processes of silencing but also centre the knowledge found in oral histories and other forms of artistic archives outside official repositories. Discussing literature and selected artwork by artists from Britain, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago, Memory and the Archival Turn in Caribbean Literature and Culture demonstrates the historiographical significance of artistic and cultural production

This book consists of a collection of essays by Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska in their first English translation, and a critical introduction. The highly engaging essays explore the lives of seven transformational figures for Mexican feminism. This includes Frida Kahlo, Maria Izquierdo, and Nahui Olin, three outstanding artists of the cultural renaissance of the early twentieth century, and Nellie Campobello, Elena Garro, Rosario Castellanos, and Pita Amor, forerunner writers and poets whose works laid a path for Mexican women writers in the later twentieth century. Poniatowska's essays discuss their fervent activity, interactions with other prominent figures, details and intricacies about their specific works, their scandalous and irreverent activities to draw attention to their craft, and specific revelations about their lives. The extensive critical introduction surveys the early feminist movement and Mexican cultural history, explores how Mexico became a more closed society by the mid-twentieth century, and suggests further reading and films. This book will be of interest both to the general reader and to scholars interested in feminist/gender studies, Mexican literary and cultural studies, Latin American women writers, the cultural renaissance, translation, and film studies

This paper aims to identify and investigate the nature, structure and influences of a society based on the viewpoint of ʿAllāma Sayyid Muḥammad Ḥusayn Ṭabāṭabāʾī (1904-1981), who laid the foundations of his sociological principles on Islamic philosophy. He was a contemporary Shiʾa philosopher, mystic, jurist, exegete of the Qurʾan and theologian who founded the Neo-Ṣadrāʾī philosophical school. By virtue of studying the nature of society from a philosophical perspective, he introduced the ideal Islamic society. This posed a great challenge for the traditional Iranian society of his time. He had new ideas about the nature of society, its constituents, and the relations between societies. He considers society true, and not a conventional constitution, which has new identity and effects. This chapter will use analytical methods to study the ideas of ʿAllāma Ṭabāṭabāʾī presented in his philosophical, social and exegetical writings about society. Through the analysis of the effects of society based on this large body of work the following question will be answered: is a society a living creature which has its own distinctive effects over and above the effects of its constituent parts e.g. growth, identity, authority, awareness and power?

The meaning of spirituality has undergone significant changes in recent decades as it shifted from traditional religious understanding to personal meanings embedded in new religious movements, New Age explorations, and everyday life. These changes can be understood in terms of contextual transformations that are conceptualized as postmodern and also recently debated as post-secular. Central to these changes is the notion of the self as an explorer of the inner being. Postmodern fragmentation contributes to a displacement of outer authenticity by the commodification of inner searches which also forms part of a disengagement from broader traditional structures and belief systems. It has led to a proliferation of spiritualities promoting self-searches in eclectic ways. However, confrontation between the material and spiritual may be leading to new searches that will redefine the self and its relationship to the sacred in post-secularity.

In psychological literature, the concept of spirituality is typically defined as something private, internal and experiential that includes meaning-making, sacred values, connectedness, and/or transcendence. Thus, spirituality is distinct from social, economic, and political spheres of human life. Most scholars who concern themselves with spirituality assume that it is a universal phenomenon that is essentially the same everywhere. But the isolation of spirituality as a sphere of life that is separated from other spheres is not a universal feature of human history. Mahatma Gandhi, who argued that spirituality is associated with political activism and the struggle for social and economic justice, illustrates this point. Spirituality is a modern concept with a specific history and what counts as spirituality and what does not depend on different configurations of power. In this paper, we explore why a category as amorphous and indeterminate as spirituality has maintained such a currency in the literature of the psychology of religion. We argue that the category of spirituality is a sociopolitical management technique for reinforcing political quietism, which is necessary for the maintenance of the neoliberal status quo.

This study primarily aimed to determine as to whether conversion styles (generative, adoptive, spontaneous), derived from Berzonsky’s Identity Styles are associated with two types of social integration (organic, mechanical). A comparison was also made between Muslim reverts and converts to other affiliations in terms of conversion styles. The sample consisted of 62 African Muslim reverts residing in Uganda from ages 17 to 35 recruited through snowball sampling. In addition to one sample t-test to compare converts, pearsons’ correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression were conducted to examine relations between variables of interest. Consistent with hypotheses, Muslim converts with higher scores in adoptive and generative styles are more likely to achieve mechanical and organic integration. In contrast spontaneous style is negatively correlated to mechanical solidarity. The hypothesis with respect to negative association between spontaneous style and organic integration, however, was not confirmed. The finding also indicated converts to various religions differ in terms of conversion styles. In conclusion, results suggest that higher levels of organic integration can be achieved owing to stronger perceived intimacy and awareness of social expectations, while higher commitment is associated with higher level of mechanical integration.

This study explores the factor structure of mystical experience among 428 subjects comprised of Yi who practice Bimoism and Yi without a background in Bimoism. Explorative factor analyses results identified common facets across groups, and these facets could be formed into Stace’s three-factor structure in both groups. Comparing factor structure and ordering, the experience of transcendence for Yi who practice Bimoism is more extrovertive than for Yi who don’t practice Bimoism, whose experience is more introvertive. These results lend strong support to the thesis that the phenomenology of mystical experience reveals a common experiential core that can be discerned across religious and spiritual traditions. These data not only demonstrate that mystical experience is universal but also that sociocultural and religious tradition influence how people organize those universal experiences. Our current study also supports the commonality of Mysticism at facet level, and unique factor structure in different groups supports the claim that different groups have different ways of organizing mystical experiences in line with their own indigenous psychologies.

As part of the Church Growth Research Programme in 2013 Voas and Watt collected the psychological profiles of 1,164 clergymen and 307 clergywomen serving in stipendiary parochial ministry, using the Francis Psychological Type Scales. This paper sets these data alongside the profile of 626 clergymen and 237 clergywomen published in 2007. This comparison suggests a significant movement among both clergymen and clergywomen away from intuition and away from perceiving. This results in a significant increase in the SJ temperament among Anglican clergy (from 31% to 39% among clergymen and from 29% to 40% among clergywomen), suggesting a movement toward a more conserving and less adventurous approach to ministry. At the same time the gap has narrowed in the preference between thinking and feeling among clergymen and clergywomen, enhancing the feminine profile of clergymen and reducing the feminine profile of clergywomen.

The purpose of this special section of Research in the Social Scientific Study of Religion is to provide a forum for examples of current scientific research on two key demographic factors that will shape the Australian church landscape into the future. The first is the increasing ethnic and cultural diversity, both within Australian society as well as in local churches. The second is how the church navigates its ageing profile, with a focus on the spirituality and wellbeing of children aged 8 to 14 years. This collection, comprising nine quantitative studies, draws from the extensive datasets of the five-yearly Australian National Church Life Surveys. Researchers from the NCLS Research team have collaborated with colleagues in Australia, UK and the USA to advance scientific knowledge and to improve understanding for practice in the Church.

Australia is one of the most multicultural countries in the world, with more than a quarter of the population born overseas. In recent years there have been debates around the best approach to ethnic composition of churches in a context of migration and multiculturalism. Using data from 1,344 churches who participated in the 2016 National Church Life Survey, this paper explores the relationships between ethnic diversity (operationalised as diversity in the countries of birth of attenders) and congregational health and vitality, in terms of religiousness of the congregation, positive evaluation of worship services, bonding within the congregation, visionary leadership and innovativeness, the proportion of the congregation who are youth and young adults, the proportion who are newcomers to church, and growth in the size of the church. Ethnic diversity contributed positively to religiousness, the presence of young people and positive worship evaluation, and negatively to bonding. Analyses were also conducted separately for Anglican, Catholic, Uniting, Baptist and Lutheran churches, indicating that ethnic diversity is particularly important for understanding vitality in Catholic parishes.

As a result of global migration, the Catholic Church in Australia and its parish communities have become increasingly multicultural. Around a third of all Mass attenders are born overseas in a non-English speaking country; a similar proportion speak a language other than English at home. Existing research has found these diverse cultural and linguistic groups have lower levels of participation in key aspects of parish life than Australian born attenders. Previously, it has been unclear if this is due to cultural and linguistic factors or other demographic features. This chapter uses a logistic regression approach with data from the 2016 National Church Life Survey (NCLS) to examine the extent to which being born overseas in a non-English speaking country and speaking a language other than English at home interacts with other individual and group-level demographic factors to influence a person’s likelihood to perform a leadership and ministry role and be involved in parish social groups. If cultural and linguistic factors are the significant predictors of non-participation in a parish setting future Catholic parish life might require new models of pastoral support that actively encourage the participation of diverse groups.

Developing social capital is thought to be important for enabling the successful settling of migrants into their new homeland. Churches are places that have been shown to foster bonding and bridging ties, and can also be important places for migrants to meet other migrants and non-migrants. We examine bonding and bridging among 30,048 churchgoers from 1439 congregations in 388 Catholic parishes who completed the Australian National Church Life Survey in 2011. Levels of bridging were generally lower than levels of bonding, but the two were positively correlated, though bridging declined among those with the highest bonding scores. First generation Asian Catholic migrants (FGACM) had lower levels of bonding and bridging than did Australian Catholics born of Australian parents (ACBAP). More frequent attendance and longer duration were associated with higher bonding, and the effects were mostly similar for migrants and non-migrants. Being in a congregation with a high proportion of people from the same region tended to increase bonding for migrants from the Philippines and Korea/Vietnam, but not for those from India/Sri Lanka. Being in a congregation with a high proportion of people from the same region tended to decrease bridging for migrants from India/Sri Lanka and Korea/Vietnam, but not for those from the Philippines. Findings are discussed in the light of a similar study of Protestant churchgoers from the same survey.

Churches, as voluntary organizations, provide pathways for exercising civic engagement, building social capital, and even demonstrating skills for employment. Taking part in leadership roles within churches can be crucial to the development of identity and self-efficacy. Are these benefits available to all, or does ethnic background restrict the leadership positions available to congregants? Drawing on Australia’s National Church Life Survey we investigate how being an ethnic minority in a church affects the possibilities for and benefits of church involvement. We find that ethnic minority congregants are less likely to be elevated to leadership roles, except in areas that serve other ethnic minorities. We further find that these congregants are less likely to develop role-based self-efficacy as a result of volunteering. Given that this occurs in both mono-Anglo and multiethnic congregations, our findings reinforce the role of churches may take to perpetuate racial/ethnic discrimination even when they are diverse organizations.

Australia’s context is one of increasing ethnic and religious diversity. Intercultural communication is an everyday reality, with cultural empathy fostering intercultural competence. Yet ideas about belonging to Australia are complex and contested. This study addresses a paradox within the context of Christian churches. Church attenders have a high sense of belonging to Australia, which has been found in other studies to be negatively related to empathy. Yet, individuals have opportunities for intercultural contact within church settings, which is associated with positive intercultural relations and reduced prejudice. This study examines data from 1,700 participants (aged 15 years and over) in the 2016 National Church Life Survey to test relationships between empathy, attitude to diversity, and belonging to Australia, taking into account congregational ethnic diversity, levels of bonding, and country of birth. Results provide some evidence that culturally diverse congregations provide opportunities to foster cultural empathy. There was also an interaction between country of birth and belonging. Belonging and attitude to diversity were not related amongst attenders born in non-English speaking countries, but were negatively related amongst those born in English-speaking countries, despite opportunity for regular contact with outgroup members. Future work would benefit from improved measures of ethnicity and further understanding of how belonging and identity operates for different groups of Australians. Implications for church leaders are that while intercultural proximity alone may not be sufficient to foster positive attitudes towards diversity, positive interactions among perceived peers with shared goals may be more effective.

Psychology research on prejudice and religion has predominantly examined the personal factors associated with prejudice, with limited attention to societal factors. The present study analyzed data from the 2011 National Church Life Survey (NCLS) of churchgoers in Australia aged 15 years and over (N = 1,910; MAge = 54.3 years; SD = 19.2 years; range = 15 to 96; 61.0% women; 68.5% native-born) to determine the associations between personal and societal factors on prejudice against Aboriginal people, immigrants, racial minorities, and refugees. Findings showed that both personal and societal factors were associated with prejudice among churchgoers. For personal factors, the experience of church worship, Catholic denomination, and private religious commitment were negatively associated with prejudice. In addition, the immigrant status of the churchgoers was differentially associated with prejudice against Aboriginal people. Specifically, those born in other English-speaking countries were less prejudiced against Aboriginal people, compared to native-born churchgoers. In contrast, those born in non-English-speaking countries were more prejudiced against Aboriginal people than native-born churchgoers. For societal factors, the association between religious diversity and prejudice depended on the immigrant status of the churchgoers. Overall, religious diversity in the church neighborhood was negatively associated with prejudice against immigrants. Compared to the native-borns, immigrant churchgoers from both English-speaking and non-English-speaking countries were more prejudiced against immigrants, controlling for the religious diversity of the church neighborhood. Results are in line with the assertion that an integration of micro-level individual and interpersonal processes with macro-level societal factors represents a fruitful area for future research in prejudice.

This study examines the psychometric properties of a modified short form of the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity. While the original seven-item short form contained two negatively voiced items, this modified form contains only one negatively voiced item, in order to improve the performance of the instrument among younger participants. Data provided by 10,084 young churchgoers between the ages of 8 and 14 years support the internal consistency reliability and construct validity of the instrument across the age range and commend the instrument for further use in research among this age group.

Drawing on data from 9,851 young people between the ages of 8 and 14 years who completed surveys while attending Catholic, Protestant, or Pentecostal churches as part of the 2016 Australian National Church Life Survey, the study employed multiple regression modelling to test two hypotheses regarding the linkages between religion and happiness among young churchgoers. The first hypothesis is that there is a positive association between religion and happiness. The second hypothesis is that the association between religion and happiness is routed through religious affect rather than through religious practice. The data support both hypotheses, and demonstrate the negative impact of church attendance on happiness among this age group when church attendance (external religiosity) is not supported by positive religious affect (internal religiosity).

Catholic teaching since the time of the Second Vatican Council has emphasised the importance of the home in the nurture of young Catholics (sometimes referred to as ecclesia domestica). Drawing on data from 2,131 young people between the ages of 8 and 14 years who completed surveys while attending Catholic churches as part of the 2016 Australian National Church Life Survey, this study employed multiple regression modelling to examine the effects of parental church attendance (treating mother and fathers separately) and home environment (in terms of family encouragement and religious engagement within the home) on frequency of child church attendance. The data demonstrated that parental church attendance is the strongest predictor. Young Catholics are more likely to attend church frequently if both mother and father come to church a lot. Moreover, after taking parental church attendance into account the home environment adds additional predictive power. Young Catholics are most likely to attend church frequently if both parents attend church and support faith within the home environment through both family encouragement and religious engagement within the home. When parental churchgoing and home environment have been taken into account, the external factors of engaging with online religious resources and of attending a Catholic school add no further positive predictive power in sustaining churchgoing among young Catholics.

In the struggle for equality and rights for women, feminist scholarship developed methodological frameworks that can be used to challenge the marginality of any ‘othered’ group in society, who may be marginalised on account of ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, or age. Whereas early feminism was critiqued as being a White, Western, middle class movement, it evolved (and continues to evolve) into a philosophical paradigm that is inclusive of the diverse ways of being a woman and of the diverse ways of being human. Feminist research approaches encapsulate a diversity of ways of doing research that challenge accepted intellectual norms, disciplinary silos and often encapsulate activism within research. These methods are usually reflective and participatory. In this special section we explore how a multiplicity of feminist approaches are applied within the sociology of religion. Through a diverse clutch of papers, we explore new frontiers that are being opened within the sociology of religion as a result of feminist methodological approaches and intellectual postionings.

A few years ago the Everyday Muslim Heritage Organization initiative was established with the desire to show that "everyone has a story". These stories are often absent in the national heritage scene and Muslim heritage refers mainly to the Muslims ‘over there’ in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The president, Sadiya Ahmed wanted to start a heritage project that worked with communities in the UK to build an archive from their personal collections to purport the idea that we need to be talking about the heritage of European Muslims which is quite a different story from Muslims anywhere else in the world. Ahmed’s initial idea came from a personal frustration: how was she, as a mother, supposed to educate her children about their own identity if there were hardly any sources for reference? Today, the Everyday Muslim initiative is active in tracing Muslim history in the UK and presenting a version of history that is absent from canonical national history. The initiative also works closely on the ‘stories of Muslim women’ and how their everyday practices contribute to identity formation through food practices, marriage, and the social and economic aspects of Muslim women’s lives in the UK. This paper explores British Muslim women’s contribution to the heritage scene through community heritage activities. It interrogates the intersections of piety, gender, motherhood, sisterhood, belonging, and ethical subjecthood in the context of community heritage formation. The research was conducted with anthropological methodologies of interviews and participant observation between 2018 and 2019 and this methodology makes contributions to the critical understanding of European conceptualizations of heritage, civilization, ethics, norms, and common culture. It also aims to reverse the marginalization and alienation of Muslim communities in the UK as a result of their historical absence.

Despite the widespread idea in Islamic culture that Muslim women should under no circumstances marry a non-Muslim, many Muslim women get married to non-Muslims. The potential influence of a non-Muslim husband on a woman’s religiosity is one of the main arguments used by scholars who are against Muslim women’s interfaith marriages. This research aims to highlight the untold stories of interreligiously married Muslim women and to examine how being part of an interreligious marriage affects their religiosity and religious experience. Based on qualitative interviews with intermarried Muslim women who are currently in interfaith union, this study shows that for many interreligiously married Muslim women, marriage to a man from a different religion influences their religious observance in two ways - first, by having no effect (either negative or positive), and second, by having a positive impact on the practise of their religion and the expansion of their religious knowledge. It reveals that the main reason for the positive change was Muslim women’s feelings of being an ambassador of Islam and Muslims in their inter-religious family.
