    Abstract ; Das vorliegende Working Paper untersucht den historischen Kontext poetologischer Theoriebildung zur Gattung Epos im 16. Jahrhundert und zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts. Dabei wird der Versuch unternommen, das in diesem Zeitraum poetologisch Denkbare und Gesagte aufzuarbeiten, soweit es bezüglich der Abfassung von epischen Texten mit zeithistorischer Thematik von Bedeutung ist. Es zeigt sich, dass aktualitätsepische Texte in einem zeitgenössischen Diskursumfeld entstehen, das die Möglichkeiten der epischen Gattung, historische Wirklichkeitsreferenzen aufzubauen, außerordentlich eingehend reflektiert hat, wobei traditionelle poetologische Positionen oft bedeutsamer sind als der ‚neue‘ Aristotelismus.

    Abstract ; Giovan Battista Marino ist ein Dichter, der seine Geltung in hohem Maße aus dem Anspruch auf ‚Neuheit‘ bezieht. Das vorliegende Working Paper Nr. 5 möchte zeigen, wie Marinos Prinzip poetischer Novation an wesentliche Grundsätze frühneuzeitlicher Nachahmungslehren anschließt und diese gleichzeitig sprengt, ohne freilich im modernen Sinn ‚innovativ‘ zu sein. Damit bestätigt das Paper die theoretischen Grundannahmen der FOR auch in Hinblick auf den literarhistorischen ‚Sonderfall‘ Marino und skizziert eine konsequente historische Verlängerung der im TP 05 behandelten Problemzusammenhänge („…canto l’arme pietose. Hybridisierungen von ‚alt‘ und ‚neu‘ in Epos und Epostheorie des Secondo Cinquecento) . Systematisch wird deutlich, dass die für TP und FOR zentral gestellten Beschreibungsmetaphern der ‚Hybride‘ und der ‚Hybridisierung‘ die Entstehungsvoraussetzungen der marinistischen Poetik erklären. Zugleich soll vorgeschlagen werden, die ‚Hybridisierung‘ als Grundfigur nachahmungspoetischer ‚alt‘-‚neu‘-Verschränkungen im Fall Marinos um den Begriff des ‚Amalgams‘ als Beschreibungskategorie zu flankieren, da Marino die Nachahmungsregeln des ausgehenden 16. Jahrhunderts auf singuläre Weise radikalisiert: Bei Marino sollen nämlich die im dichterischen Werk aktualisierten vorgängigen Textbestände – anders als bei Tasso, der seine unterschiedlichen Bezüge miteinander überblendet und in der Hybride als sinnstiftende Referenzsysteme noch erkennbar hält – in ihrer Rekombination zur völligen Unkenntlichkeit miteinander vermengt – ‚amalgamiert‘ – werden.

    ger: Diese Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Einsatz von Gedichten und Kurzgeschichten im Italienischunterricht, um Wortschatz zu vermitteln und die Lesekompetenz zu verbessern. Im theoretischen Teil dieser Arbeit wird auf den fremdsprachlichen Leseprozess und Wortschatzerwerb eingegangen und gezeigt, wie literarische Texte diese positiv beeinflussen können. Dabei werden, unter anderem, die Prozesse „top-down“ und „bottom-up“, die Schema Theorie, sowie verschiedene Lesestrategien und der Kreislauf des Lesens in der Fremdsprache besprochen. Außerdem werden wichtige Erkenntnisse im Bereich des fremdsprachlichen Wortschatzerwerbes aufgezeigt, die, unter anderem, das mentale Lexikon, das Lang- und Kurzzeitgedächtnis als auch das aktive und passive Vokabular betreffen, wobei stets die didaktischen Konsequenzen für den Italienischunterricht aufgezeigt werden.Der praktische Teil besteht aus fünf Stundenbildern für die Sprachniveaus A1, A2 und B1, die auf Kurzgeschichten und Gedichten von Gianni Rodari basieren. Diese, der Kinderliteratur zugehörigen Texte, sind authentisch, da sie für eine muttersprachliche Leserschaft verfasst wurden. Authentische Texte haben nicht die Fremdsprachendidaktik zum Ziel, sondern wollen unterhalten und motivieren Lernende aus diesem Grund zur fremdsprachlichen Lektüre. Da diese auch unbekannte sprachliche Strukturen enthalten, kann die Lesekompetenz gesteigert werden, da SchülerInnen erlernen mit diesen umzugehen und somit ihre Lesegeschwindigkeit und ihr Textverständnis verbessern. Die verwendeten Kurzgeschichten und Gedichte bieten außerdem einen reichen Kontext, durch welchen neue Wörter leichter gemerkt werden können und versorgen Lernende mit den für den Fremdsprachenerwerb notwendigen authentischen Modellen des Sprachgebrauchs. Die präsentierten Stundenbilder sollen zeigen, wie literarische Texte den Italienischunterricht bereichern können, um die Fremdsprache auf interessante und anregende Weise zu unterrichten. eng: This thesis deals with the use of poems and short stories in lessons of Italian as a foreign language in order to teach vocabulary and improve reading competence. The theoretical part discusses the reading process and vocabulary acquisition in a foreign language and shows how literary texts can have a positive influence on these aspects. For this purpose, the strategies of “top-down” and “bottom-up” processing, the schema theory as well as different reading strategies and the cycle of reading in a foreign language are explained. Furthermore, findings in the area of vocabulary acquisition concerning, amongst others, the mental lexicon, the short and long term memory and the active and passive vocabulary are reported. The impact the established data has on the actual teaching process is also discussed. In the practical part, five teaching units based on short stories and poems for the levels A1, A2 and B1 are presented. The literary texts, by Gianni Rodari, belong to the area of children literature and are authentic. They are, therefore, written for a native audience and do not aim at teaching the foreign language itself but at entertaining the reader, which is why students find reading them motivating and interesting. Furthermore, in reading literary texts, students improve their reading rate and their textual comprehension by learning how to deal with unknown linguistic structures. Additionally, the short stories and poems used in this thesis offer a rich context, which helps students to memorize new words and provides them with necessary authentic models of the foreign language. The teaching units presented in this thesis intend to show how literary texts can enrich Italian lessons and contribute to interesting and stimulating classes.

    The first extended analysis of the relationship between Italian criminology and crime fiction in English, Methods of Murder examines works by major authors both popular, such as Gianrico Carofiglio, and canonical, such as Carlo Emilio Gadda.Many scholars have argued that detective fiction did not exist in Italy until 1929, and that the genre, which was considered largely Anglo-Saxon, was irrelevant on the Italian peninsula. By contrast, Past traces the roots of the twentieth-century literature and cinema of crime to two much earlier, diverging interpretations of the criminal: the bodiless figure of Cesare Beccaria’s Enlightenment-era On Crimes and Punishments, and the biological offender of Cesare Lombroso’s positivist Criminal Man.Through her examinations of these texts, Past demonstrates the links between literary, philosophical, and scientific constructions of the criminal, and provides the basis for an important reconceptualization of Italian crime fiction

    The mother-daughter relationship is a popular theme in contemporary Italian writing but has never before been analysed in a comprehensive book-length study. In Corporeal Bonds, Patrizia Sambuco analyses novels by authors such as Elsa Morante, Francesca Sanvitale, Mariateresa Di Lascia, and Elena Ferrante, each of which is narrated from the daughter’s point of view and depicts the daughter’s bond with the mother.Highlighting the recurrent images throughout these works, Sambuco traces these back to alternative forms of communication between mother and daughter, as well as to the female body. Sambuco also explores the attempts of the daughter-narrators to define a female self that is outside the constrictions of patriarchal society. Through these investigations, Corporeal Bonds identifies a strong connection between the ideas of post-Lacanian critical theorists, Italian feminist thinkers, and the stories within the novels

    Die zwischen 1860 und 1870 vollendete politische Einigung Italiens ist in der historiographischen Literatur aus den Jahrzehnten davor ideologisch vorbereitet worden. Einen entscheidenden Beitrag dazu leistet der sogenannte romanzo storico risorgimentale. Hierbei handelt es sich um einen Romantyp, der seit etwa 1820 von italienischen Autoren nach dem Muster der historischen Romane eines Sir Walter Scott ausgebildet worden ist. Mit diesem Romantyp hält das in anderen europäischen Ländern schon bekannte Phänomen der Massenliteratur auch in Italien seinen Einzug. Insofern spielt der romanzo storico risorgimentale eine Schlüsselrolle für die Modernisierung des italienischen Literatursystems. Die meisten der etwa siebzig behandelten Romane sind durch eine im Vergleich zu dem Scott'schen Modell forcierte Melodramatik gekennzeichnet. Indem sie auch dem nichtgelehrten Teil des italienischen Publikums ideologische Paradigmen aus der nationalen Geschichte nahebringen, über die sich alle Italiener als Teil einer homogenen historischen Schicksalsgemeinschaft erfahren können, erfüllen sie eine patriotische Propagandafunktion.     Italienische Literaten des 19. Jahrhunderts haben das Diktum von Mailand als einem "Babylo minima" - im Gegensatz zum "Babylo maxima" Paris - geprägt und damit die besondere Rolle Mailands im Italien des 19. Jahrhunderts wie auch die Problematik einer italienischen Stadtliteratur angesprochen. Mailand ist diejenige Stadt Italiens, die sich zu einer Metropole von annähernd europäischen Dimensionen entwickelt: der italienischen Literatur des Ottocento hingegen wurde in der Forschung bislang jegliche Urbanität abgesprochen. Im Zentrum der Studie steht die besondere, auch unter komparatistischer Fragestellung herausgearbeitete Entwicklung der italienischen Stadtliteratur im 19. Jahrhundert, an der die Rezeption der französischen Literatur, insbesondere des Naturalismus, wesentlichen Anteil hatte. Unter Einbeziehung der literaturkritischen Diskussion um das Phänomen 'Stadt' werden dabei auch Gestaltungsverfahren der italienischen Literatur, die auf eine beginnende Moderne weisen, sichtbar gemacht. Nach einem Überblick über die Stadtdarstellung von Alessandro Manzoni bis zur Scapigliatura stellt die Untersuchung Romane und Erzählungen aus dem letzten Viertel des Ottocento von Giovanni Verga (1840-1922), Emilio De Marchi (1851-1901) und Paolo Valera (1850-1926) in den Mittelpunkt. Die Texte bieten ein vielfältiges und differenziertes Bild der urbanen Realität, das von kritischer Distanznahme bis hin zum Aufspüren des poetologischen und innovativen Potentials von Großstadt reicht. Die Autoren haben jeder auf individuelle Weise Anteil am lombardischen Verismus, der in der Forschung allzu lange unbeachtet geblieben ist und der nun erstmals unter urbaner Fragestellung behandelt wird. Die Studie kann zeigen, daß auch die italienische Literatur des Ottocento, dem gängigen Bild von ihrer Stadtfeindlichkeit zum Trotz, zunehmende Sensibilisierung für spezifisch urbane Phänomene und die damit verbundenen literarischen Gestaltungsprobleme erkennen läßt

In this book, Chiara Ferrari interrogates how the rhetoric of sacrifice was used by the Italian fascist regime throughout the interwar years to support its totalitarian project and its vision of an all-encompassing bond between the people and the state.The Rhetoric of Violence and Sacrifice in Fascist Italy focuses on speeches by Benito Mussolini and key literary works by prominent writers Carlo Emilio Gadda and Elio Vittorini. Through this investigation, Ferrari demonstrates how sacrifice functioned in relation to other elements of fascist rhetoric, such as the frequent reiterations of an impending national crisis, the need for collaboration among social classes, and the forging of social contact between the leader and the people

    Lina Bolzoni's impressive study of the memory culture of sixteenth-century Italy appears here for the first time in English translation. Since its original incarnation as La stanza della memoria: Modelli letterari e iconografici nell'et+ della stampa, published by Einaudi of Torino in 1995, Bolzoni's study has been praised by critics and ranked with the classic texts in its field - those by Paolo Rossi, Frances Yates and Mary Carruthers.The book takes as its starting point a striking paradox: that the antique tradition of the art of memory - created by an oral culture - reached its moment of greatest diffusion during an age that saw the birth of the printed book. Bolzoni's examination of this phenomenon, in which archaic and modern elements came together in a precarious equilibrium, reveals the profound ties that existed at the time between memory and creativity, and between words and images.Drawing on the multiplicity of practices that relied on techniques of memory, Bolzoni presents diagrams, cipher alphabets, rebuses and emblemlike pictures characteristic of the late-Medieval and early-modern periods, indicating their use for literary games and preaching. In doing so, she skilfully reconstructs a particular mentality, a way of apprehending words and images that was of central importance for a long period of time but that has since been forgotten

    Women writers of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Italy reinvigorated the modern epistolary novel through their re-fashioning of the genre as a tool for examining women's roles and experiences. Addressing the Letter argues that many epistolary novels purposely tie narrative structure to thematic content, creating in the process powerful texts that reflect and challenge literary and socio-cultural norms.Through the lens of the genre, Laura A. Salsini considers how the works of authors including the Marchesa Colombi, Sibilla Aleramo, Gianna Manzini, Natalia Ginzburg, and Oriana Fallaci highlight such issues as love, the loss of ideals, lack of communication and connection, and feminist ideology. She also analyses what may be the first woman-authored Italian example of epistolary fiction: Orintia Romagnuoli Sacrati's Lettere di Giulia Willet (1818). In their reworking of the epistolary narrative form, Italian women writers challenged dominant assumptions about female behaviours, roles, relationships, and sexuality in modern Italy
