    How do American intellectuals try to achieve their political and social goals? By what means do they articulate their hopes for change? John McGowan seeks to identify the goals and strategies of contemporary humanistic intellectuals who strive to shape the politics and culture of their time. In a lively mix of personal reflection and shrewd analysis, McGowan visits the sites of intellectual activity (scholarly publications, professional conferences, the classroom, and the university) and considers the hazards of working within such institutional contexts to effect change outside the academy. Democracy's Children considers the historical trajectory that produced current intellectual practices. McGowan links the growing prestige of "culture" since 1800 to the growth of democracy and the obsession with modernity and explores how intellectuals became both custodians and creators of culture. Caught between fears of culture's irrelevance and dreams of its omnipotence, intellectuals pursue a cultural politics that aims for wide-ranging social transformations. For better or worse, McGowan says, the humanities are now tied to culture and to the university. The opportunities and frustrations attendant on this partnership resonate with the larger successes and failures of contemporary democratic societies. His purpose in this collection of essays is to illuminate the conditions under which intellectuals in a democracy work and at the same time to promote intellectual activities that further democratic ideals

    Main description: Die Arbeit vertritt die These, daß dem Symbolkomplex der antiken Mysterien eine für die Selbstdeutung der frühromantischen Generation zentrale Rolle zukommt. Kunsttheoretische Schriften und Dichtungen von Schlegel, Schleiermacher, Novalis, Loeben und Eichendorff konturieren mit diesem Sprachfeld ein nicht mythologisch-allgemeines, exklusives 'Wissen', das nur in besonderen Redeweisen sagbar ist. Die entsprechende Form intellektueller Identitätsbildung wird als Reaktion auf wissens- und sozialgeschichtliche Modernisierungsprozesse gedeutet. Um der konnotativen Fülle der romantischen Schriften gerecht zu werden, enthält die Arbeit jeweils ein ausführliches Kapitel zur Antike und zu den unmittelbaren Voraussetzungen der romantischen Selbstdeutung in der deutschen Aufklärung

    Main description: This work advances the thesis that the symbolism of the ancient mysteries was of central significance for the self-interpretation of the early generation of German Romantics. Literary works and writings on the theory of art by Schlegel, Schleiermacher, Novalis, Loeben and Eichendorff draw upon this source to outline an exclusive form of 'knowledge' that is neither mythodological nor general and can only be communicated by special modes of discourse. The resulting form of intellectual identity formation is interpreted here as a reaction to modernization processes taking shape in society and in the communication of knowledge. With a view of doing justice to the connotative richness of these Romantic writings, there are also detailed chapters on Antiquity and the immediate wellsprings of Romantic self-interpretation to be found in German Enlightenment thinking

    Ein Fischerdorf bei Toulon war einst die »Hauptstadt der deutschen Literatur«. So jedenfalls sah es Ludwig Marcuse. Nach Hitlers Machtergreifung flohen zahlreiche deutsche Literaten an die Côte d'Azur. In Sanary-sur-Mer trafen sich Ernst Toller und Bert Brecht am Hafen, hier besaß Lion Feuchtwanger ein Haus am Meer. Thomas Mann mit Frau besuchte die Kirmes, während Sohn Klaus am »Mephisto« schrieb. Doch das Exil unter Palmen wurde bald zur Mausefalle. Bei Kriegsbeginn erklärte Frankreich die Deutschen zu feindlichen Ausländern. Wer nicht rechtzeitig nach Übersee emigrieren konnte, wurde interniert, deportiert und ermordet. Magali Nieradka-Steiner konnte bisher nicht bekannte Dokumente nutzen und mit den letzten Zeitzeugen sprechen. Ihr Buch erzählt, wie sich universale Katastrophe und individuelles Schicksal in Sanary kreuzen.

    Main description: Die Arbeit vertritt die These, daß dem Symbolkomplex der antiken Mysterien eine für die Selbstdeutung der frühromantischen Generation zentrale Rolle zukommt. Kunsttheoretische Schriften und Dichtungen von Schlegel, Schleiermacher, Novalis, Loeben und Eichendorff konturieren mit diesem Sprachfeld ein nicht mythologisch-allgemeines, exklusives 'Wissen', das nur in besonderen Redeweisen sagbar ist. Die entsprechende Form intellektueller Identitätsbildung wird als Reaktion auf wissens- und sozialgeschichtliche Modernisierungsprozesse gedeutet. Um der konnotativen Fülle der romantischen Schriften gerecht zu werden, enthält die Arbeit jeweils ein ausführliches Kapitel zur Antike und zu den unmittelbaren Voraussetzungen der romantischen Selbstdeutung in der deutschen Aufklärung. Main description: This work advances the thesis that the symbolism of the ancient mysteries was of central significance for the self-interpretation of the early generation of German Romantics. Literary works and writings on the theory of art by Schlegel, Schleiermacher, Novalis, Loeben and Eichendorff draw upon this source to outline an exclusive form of 'knowledge' that is neither mythodological nor general and can only be communicated by special modes of discourse. The resulting form of intellectual identity formation is interpreted here as a reaction to modernization processes taking shape in society and in the communication of knowledge. With a view of doing justice to the connotative richness of these Romantic writings, there are also detailed chapters on Antiquity and the immediate wellsprings of Romantic self-interpretation to be found in German Enlightenment thinking.

    The mid-twentieth century gave rise to a rich array of new approaches to the study of the Middle Ages by both professional medievalists and those more well-known from other pursuits, many of whom continue to exert their influence over politics, art, and history today. Attending to the work of a diverse and transnational group of intellectuals - Hannah Arendt, Erich Auerbach, W. E. B. Du Bois, Frantz Fanon, Erwin Panofsky, Simone Weil, among others - the essays in this volume shed light on these thinkers in relation to one another and on the persistence of their legacies in our own time. This interdisciplinary collection gives us a fuller and clearer sense of how these figures made some of their most enduring contributions with medieval culture in mind. Thinking of the Medieval is a timely reminder of just how vital the Middle Ages have been in shaping modern thought.

    To justify the plundering of todays Democratic Republic of the Congo, U.S. intellectual elites have continuously produced dismissive Congo discourses. Tracing these discourses in great depth and breadth for the first time, Johnny Van Hove shows how U.S. intellectuals (and their influential European counterparts) have been using the Congo in similar fashions for their own goals. Analyzing intellectuals as diverse as W.E.B. Du Bois, Joseph Conrad, and David Van Reybrouck, the book offers a theorization of Central West Africa, a case study of normalized narratives on the »Other«, and a stirring wake up call for all contemporary writers on international history and politics
