    ger: Diese Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage nach indianischer Identität in der heutigen Welt und den Lehrern und Vaterfiguren, die den Weg dorthin weisen. Der erste Teil der Arbeit gibt einen kurzen Überblick über die Geschichte der Indianer und über die Entwicklung ihrer Literatur. Durch Jahrhunderte, geprägt von Völkermord und Diskriminierung, ist das Bild des Indianers entstellt worden und die jüngeren Generationen der Native Americans schämen sich teilweise für ihre Herkunft, was sich wiederum in einem Mangel an Identitätsbewusstsein in den Leben der Indianer zeigt. Das letzte Kapitel des informativen ersten Teiles stellt den Autor Richard Wagamese vor, von dessen Werken der Analyseteil der Arbeit handelt. Der Analyseteil der Arbeit befasst sich mit vier der bekanntesten Werke von Richard Wagamese: Keeper?n Me, For Joshua, Dream Wheels und A Quality of Light. Keeper?n Me und For Joshua befassen sich mit Richard Wagameses autobiographischen Erfahrungen als indianisches Waisenkind, das als Teenager versucht, seine Einsamkeit und Angst in Alkohol zu ertränken. Als dies nicht funktioniert, macht Richard sich auf die Suche nach seinen indianischen Wurzeln. In jedem seiner Werke lässt Richard Wagamese spezielle Figuren in die Leben seiner Hauptcharaktere treten, die ihnen helfen, den Weg zu ihrem wahren Selbst zu finden. Dieses Prinzip kehrt in allen vier Werken wieder und wird auf die Indianische Auffassung von Vaterschaft zurückgeführt: Ein Vater lebt für das Hervorbringen seiner Kinder. Im letzten Teil der Arbeit werden die Erkenntnisse der Analyse noch einmal zusammengefasst und zu einem Endresümee geformt. Die Arbeit zeigt auf, dass die wahre Suche nach der eigenen Identität und Bestimmung im Leben keine exklusiv indianische Notwendigkeit ist, sondern ein weltweites Phänomen, auf das sich immer mehr Menschen einlassen. eng: This thesis deals with the question of Native American identity today, and the teachers and father figures who assist Indians to find their place in modern North American society. The first part of the paper gives some important facts on Native American history and Indian literature. The effects of decades of genocide and discrimination against Aborigines show in the younger generations of Indians, who suffer from a lack to self-confidence when it comes to their ethnic origin. Shame and the fact of being associated with negative stereotypes make it difficult to accept the cultural heritage which belongs to them. The last part of the first chapter introduces the writer Richard Wagamese, whose works are discussed in the analytical chapters of this thesis. In this paper I analyzed four of Richard Wagamese best known novels: Keeper ?n Me, For Joshua, Dream Wheels, and A Quality of Light. The first two books on this list, deal with experiences Richard Wagamese made himself as an Indian child lost as an orphan, growing up in a mostly hostile, white environment. He tries to drown his fears and loneliness in alcohol. Still, his curiosity does not get silenced and he starts the quest for his Native American roots. With the help of various father and mentor figures he finally succeeds in finding a home and peace with who he is. This paper concludes with a final statement on the roles of fathers and mentors in context with Native American tradition and their importance in the process of Indians learning how to live a balanced lifestyle, caught between two worlds; the traditional, old ways their people comes from, and the white-dominated mainstream society they are confronted with every day.

    ger: Diese Magisterarbeit befasst sich mit den literarischen und filmischen Werken von Sherman Alexie (Amerikanischer Schriftsteller, Drehbuchautor, Dichter und Regisseur), der ein repräsentatives Beispiel der authentischen Indianischer Heldenfigur geschaffen hat. Seine Auffassung umdefiniert und entkräftet die üblichen, stereotypischen und mythologischen Darstellungen des Indianerhelden, die die amerikanische Mainstream - Kulturgruppe verkörpert. Diese stereotypische Darstellung ergibt sich aus einer langen Tradition, die eine vereinfachte und fade Symbolik des Indianerhelden, sowohl literarische als auch filmische, bevorzugt hat und zwar in früher amerikanischer Kolonialliteratur und Hollywood - Filmen, die in den 60er und 90er Jahren produziert wurden. Einige Beispiele dieser Filme sind im ersten Kapitel dieser Arbeit aufgeführt und ausführlich erklärt.Das zweite Kapitel untersucht den theoretischen Hintergrund der vorliegenden Frage und verweist auf die Definition von Mythos, die dem Forscher Roland Barthes zugeschrieben ist. Diese Definition wurde später von Ott und Mack, die sich mit Mythenbildung beschäftigt haben, erweitert. Weiterhin analysiert dieses Kapitel die ideologischen Prozesse, die auf die Schaffung des Indianer Heldenmythos aufwendbar sind. Schließlich befasst sich dieser Teil mit der Definition des Mythos, die die Autorin für die Zwecke der Arbeit entwickelt hat. Die Diskussion über die Auswirkungen solcher Mythenbildung - Prozesse auf Indianer bildet eine imaginäre Brücke zum dritten Kapitel, das die Doppeldeutigkeit Indianischer Darstellungen und die Renaissance und Widerstand in Indianischer literarischen und filmischen Werken vom Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts behandelt. Weiterhin ist dieses Kapitel den Werken von Alexie gewidmet. In dem vierten und letzten Kapitel beschreibt die Autorin ihre eigene Aufgliederung des neuen Indianerhelden, die sich auf Alexies Hauptfiguren stützt. Diese Hauptfiguren treten in Dialog mit den stereotypischen Mainstream - Indianischer Helden und das Agens und Thema dieses spezifischen Amerikaner Mythos zu umdefinieren, überdenken und entkräften. eng: This master's thesis focuses on the literary and cinematic works of Sherman Alexie (Native American writer, screenwriter, poet and director) as a representative example of creating authentic Indian Hero character who redefines and subverts the “standard” stereotypical and mythological representations of the Indian hero by the mainstream American cultural group. Such stereotypical imagery results from a long tradition of over-simplified and flat representation of the Indian Hero, both in literature and film, spanning from the early colonial American literature all the way to the 60s and 90s Hollywood-produced films, the representative examples of which will be listed and described in the first chapter.The second chapter offers the theoretical background of the issue at hand with the basis in Barthes’ definition of myth and mythology, further developed by Ott and Mack’s formulation of myth-making and ideological processes applicable to the creation of the Indian Hero myth and lastly supported by the author’s own definition of myth for the purposes of the thesis. The discussion of the effect of such myth-making processes on the minority self-representations of Native Americans represents a bridge leading to the third chapter which deals with introducing the double-sidedness of Native American representations and the renaissance and resistance in the Native American literary and cinematic works of the end of the 20th Century with a strong and investigative spotlight on the works of Alexie.The forth and final chapter offers the author’s own possible categorization of the New Indian Hero stemming from such characters produced by the Native American authors themselves while entering into a dialogue with the stereotypical mainstream Indian Hero characters, thus redefining, revisiting and subverting the agent and subject of this specific American national myth.

    ger: In dieser Diplomarbeit wird gezeigt, dass Sherman Alexie verschiedene Arten von Humor in seinen Werken einbringt, um sich mit grausamen Wahrheiten der Geschichte und der Gegenwart der amerikanischen Ureinwohner zu befassen. Er verwendet Ironie und Sarkasmus um stereotypen Ansichten über Indianern entgegenzuwirken, die vielfach durch die Medien verbreitet werden. Darüber hinaus bindet er schwarzen Humor in seinen Texten ein, um den Zusammenhalt der Ureinwohner zu stärken, aber auch um interkulturelle Barrieren zu überwinden. Außerdem verwendet Alexie absurd komische Elemente, um die Frustration über die Geschichte, sowie die verheerenden gegenwärtige Situation der Native Americans aufzu-zeigen und damit umzugehen. Schließlich verdeutlicht die Diplomarbeit, dass Alexie selbst-ironischen Humor als Verteidigungsmechanismus gegen Rassismus gebraucht. Ebenso dient es als Schutz vor Hänseleien und Mobbing von Stamm-Mitgliedern. Der Fokus der Analyse liegt auf dem Roman Reservation Blues, den Kurzgeschichten "The Approximate Size of My Favorite Tumor" und "Imagining the Reservation", und dem Jugendroman The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. eng: This diploma thesis shows that Sherman Alexie includes different types of humor in his literary works to address and deal with horrible truths about Native American history and presence. The analysis has demonstrated that Alexie uses sarcasm and irony to criticize stereotypes which are spread about American Indians through the media. Moreover, he introduces dark humor as a means of building Native bonds and absurdity to counteract frustration. In addition, he presents self-deprecating humor as a form of self-defense against racist assaults and tribal teasing. For the purpose of this thesis the novel Reservation Blues, the short stories "The Approximate Size of My Favorite Tumor" and "Imagining the Reservation", as well as the young adult novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian have been anaylized.

    From the 1820s to the 1930s, Christian missionaries and federal agents launched a continent-wide assault against Indian sacred dance, song, ceremony, and healing ritual in an attempt to transform Indian peoples into American citizens. In spite of this century-long religious persecution, Native peoples continued to perform their sacred traditions and resist the foreign religions imposed on them, as well as to develop new practices that partook of both. At the same time, some whites began to explore Indian performance with interest, and even to promote Indian sacred traditions as a source of power for their own society. The varieties of Indian performance played a formative role in American culture and identity during a critical phase in the nation's development.In Medicine Bundle, Joshua David Bellin examines the complex issues surrounding Indian sacred performance in its manifold and intimate relationships with texts and images by both Indians and whites. From the paintings of George Catlin, the traveling showman who exploited Indian ceremonies for the entertainment of white audiences, to the autobiography of Black Elk, the Lakota holy man whose long life included stints as a dancer in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, a supplicant in the Ghost Dance movement, and a catechist in the Catholic Church, Bellin reframes American literature, culture, and identity as products of encounter with diverse performance traditions.     The word "elegy" comes from the Ancient Greek elogos, meaning a mournful poem or song, in particular, a song of grief in response to loss. Because mourning and memorialization are so deeply embedded in the human condition, all human societies have developed means for lamenting the dead, and, in "That the People Might Live" Arnold Krupat surveys the traditions of Native American elegiac expression over several centuries.Krupat covers a variety of oral performances of loss and renewal, including the Condolence Rites of the Iroquois and the memorial ceremony of the Tlingit people known as koo'eex, examining as well a number of Ghost Dance songs, which have been reinterpreted in culturally specific ways by many different tribal nations. Krupat treats elegiac "farewell" speeches of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in considerable detail, and comments on retrospective autobiographies by Black Hawk and Black Elk.Among contemporary Native writers, he looks at elegiac work by Linda Hogan, N. Scott Momaday, Gerald Vizenor, Sherman Alexie, Maurice Kenny, and Ralph Salisbury, among others. Despite differences of language and culture, he finds that death and loss are consistently felt by Native peoples both personally and socially: someone who had contributed to the People's well-being was now gone. Native American elegiac expression offered mourners consolation so that they might overcome their grief and renew their will to sustain communal life

In the Belly of a Laughing God examines how eight contemporary Native women poets in Canada and the United States - Joy Harjo, Louise Halfe, Kimberly Blaeser, Marilyn Dumont, Diane Glancy, Jeannette Armstrong, Wendy Rose, and Marie Annharte Baker - employ humour and irony to address the intricacies of race, gender, and nationality. While recognizing that humour and irony are often employed as methods of resistance, this careful analysis also acknowledges the ways that they can be used to assert or restore order.Using the framework of humour and irony, five themes emerge from the words of these poets: religious transformations; generic transformations; history, memory, and the nation; photography and representational visibility; and land and the significance of 'home.' Through the double-voice discourse of irony and the textual surprises of humour, these poets challenge hegemonic renderings of themselves and their cultures, even as they enforce their own cultural norms

    Main description: Americans' first attempts to forge a national identity coincided with the apparent need to define--and limit--the status and rights of Native Americans. During these early decades of the nineteenth century, the image of the "Indian" circulated throughout popular culture--in the novels of James Fenimore Cooper, plays about Pocahontas, Indian captivity narratives, Black Hawk's autobiography, and visitors' guides to the national capitol. In exploring such sources as well as the political and legal rhetoric of the time, Susan Scheckel argues that the "Indian question" was intertwined with the ways in which Americans viewed their nation's past and envisioned its destiny. She shows how the Indians provided a crucial site of reflection upon national identity. And yet the Indians, by being denied the natural rights upon which the constitutional principles of the United States rested, also challenged American convictions of moral ascendancy and national legitimacy.Scheckel investigates, for example, the Supreme Court's decision on Indian land rights and James Fenimore Cooper's popular frontier romance The Pioneers: both attempted to legitimate American claims to land once owned by Indians and to assuage guilt associated with the violence of conquest by incorporating the Indians in a version of the American political "family." Alternatively, the widely performed Pocahontas plays dealt with the necessity of excluding Indians politically, but also portrayed these original inhabitants as embodying the potential of the continent itself. Such examples illustrate a gap between principles and practice. It is from this gap, according to the author, that the nation emerged, not as a coherent idea or a realist narrative, but as an ongoing performance that continues to play out, without resolution, fundamental ambivalences of American national identity

    The Savage and Modern Self examines the representations of North American "Indians" in novels, poetry, plays, and material culture from eighteenth-century Britain. Author Robbie Richardson argues that depictions of "Indians" in British literature were used to critique and articulate evolving ideas about consumerism, colonialism, "Britishness," and, ultimately, the "modern self" over the course of the century. Considering the ways in which British writers represented contact between Britons and "Indians," both at home and abroad, the author shows how these sites of contact moved from a self-affirmation of British authority earlier in the century, to a mutual corruption, to a desire to appropriate perceived traits of "Indianess." Looking at texts exclusively produced in Britain, The Savage and Modern Self reveals that "the modern" finds definition through imagined scenes of cultural contact. By the end of the century, Richardson concludes, the hybrid Indian-Brition emerging in literature and visual culture exemplifies a form of modern, British masculinity

    Disparity and division in religion, technology and ideology have characterized relations between English-Canadian and Indian cultures through-out Canada's history. From the earliest declaration of white territorial ownership to the current debate on aboriginal rights, red man and white man have had opposing principles and perspectives. The most common 'solutions' imposed on these conflicts by white men have relegated the Indian to the fringes of white society and consciousness. This survey of English-Canadian literature is the first comprehensive examination of a tradition in which white writers turn to the Indian and his culture for standards and models by which they can measure their own values and goals; for patterns of cultural destruction, transformation, and survival; and for sources of native heroes and indigenous myths. Leslie Monkman examines images of the Indian as they appear in works raning from Robert Rogers' Ponteach, or The Savages of America (1766) to Robertson Davies' 'Pontiac and the Green Man' (1977), demonstrating how English-Canadian writers have illuminated their own world through reference to Indian culture. The Indian has been seen as an antagonist, as a superior alternative, as a member of a vanishing and lamented race, and as a hero and the source of the new myths. Although white/Indian tension often lies in apparently irreconcilable opposites, Monkman finds in the literature surveyed complementary images reflecting a common humanity.This is an important contribution to a hitherto unexplored area of Canadian literature in English which should give rise to further elaboration of this major theme
