The available work is concerned with the image of femininity in the American TV series Gilmore Girls. In order to fathom which images the series produces and offers to its audience special attention is given to the topics humor and femininity. Particularly the idea that a single mother (out of her own choice) is at the center of the series, corresponds with an actual and real demographic trend in today's western world. The introductory chapter deals with the main features of the genres situation comedy and dramedy. In the next chapter the three women of the Gilmore family are analyzed. Through a focus on four aspects (character, individual Achilles heel, clothing style and generation) this chapter aims to give a valid representation of the characters and their representation of femininity. Chapter number four deals with the three relevant socio-political topics sexuality, marriage and alcohol seen through the eyes of Rory, Lorelai and Emily. The success of the series is considerably affected by the individual humor of the three characters. Therefore, chapter number five sets out to explain the three fundamental theories about laughter and their most prominent representatives. Next, selected dialogs are analyzed. In the penultimate chapter Sigmund Freud and his famous structural model of the human mind, through which he explains human behavior, are introduced to the reader. Freud's model proves to be ideal for the composition of dynamic and successful characters. In the theoretical part Freud's super ego, ego and id are explained, followed by the attribution of a specific role to each of the Gilmore women.Concluding, the title song "Where You Lead" is discussed. A title song functions as an important signal of recognition, it awakens expectations in the viewer and affects our reception considerably. For these reasons a close analysis of the lyrics are given in the final chapter.

The period between the First World War and the fall of the Berlin Wall is often characterized as the age of extremes—while this era witnessed unprecedented violence and loss of human life, it also saw a surge in humorous entertainment in both democratic and authoritarian societies. The Politics of Humour examines how works such as satirical magazines and comedy films were used both to reaffirm group identity and to exclude those who did not belong. The essays in this collection analyse the political and social context of comedy in Europe and the United States, exploring topics ranging from the shifting targets of ethnic jokes to the incorporation of humour into wartime broadcasting and the uses of satire as a means of resistance. Comedy continues to define the nature of group membership today, and The Politics of Humour offers an intriguing look at how entertainment helped everyday people make sense of the turmoil of the twentieth century

This edited volume brings together a range of contributions solely on the linguistics of humour. Rather than favour one approach, this collection of articles gives a state-of-the-art picture of current directions in pragmatic humour studies. The contributors assume multifarious theoretical perspectives and discuss a wide array of issues germane to different types of humour across discourse domains. Consequently, the whole gamut of humorous forms and mechanisms are elucidated, such as surrealist irony, incongruity in register humour, mechanisms of pun formation, as well as interpersonal functions of conversational humour. In addition, the papers address diversified manifestations of humour, such as puns in Shakespeare’s plays, gendered jokes on the Internet, sexuality in anti-proverbs, Woody Allen’s prose, humour in “Friends”, and parody by Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Most importantly, the chapters offer new research findings and advocate novel theoretical conceptualisations of humorous phenomena, drawing on the wealth of existing scholarship. Therefore, the volume is bound to serve as a well of knowledge and inspiration for both seasoned and beginning researchers with interests in the pragmatics of humour.

Besser also, Günter erfährt endlich, wie man wirklich gut miteinander spricht: Wie sagt man, was man sagen will? Wie versteht man, was andere meinen?

"In the Belly of a Laughing God examines how eight contemporary Native women poets in Canada and the United States, Joy Harjo, Louise Halfe, Kimberly Blaeser, Marilyn Dumont, Diane Glancy, Jeannette Armstrong, Wendy Rose, and Marie Annharte Baker, employ humour and irony to address the intricacies of race, gender, and nationality. While recognizing that humour and irony are often employed as methods of resistance, this careful analysis also acknowledges the ways in which they can be used to assert or restore order

What is wit made out of in the comedies of Shakespeare, Jonson, Shirley and their contemporaries? What does it hide? What does it reveal? This book addresses these questions by turning to the relationship between comic form and local history. Explorations of familiar sites, including Windsor Forest, Smithfield, Covent Garden and Hyde Park, are matched with close readings of drama that focus on overlays between theatrical, spatial, narrative and social conventions. Dramatic comedy's definitive interest in cultural competency and incompetence, and wit and witlessness, is revealed through discussions of commerce, gambling, royal forests and new or newly public spaces in and around early modern London. Along with Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor and Ben Jonson's Epicene and Bartholomew Fair, special emphasis is placed on the neglected town comedies of the 1630s - the forerunners of the Restoration comedy of manners and the satirical realism of our own day.
