    In diesem Buch sind sieben Essays und Vorträge des weltweit beachteten kenianischen Autors (Jahrgang 1938) aus der Zeit vor 2009 über Dekolonisierung in Afrika versammelt, denen "der Ruf nach einer visionären, geeinten afrikanischen Führung zugrunde" liegt. Seit über sechzig Jahren schreibt Ngugi wa Thiong?o, der 2019 mit dem renommierten Erich-Maria-Remarque-Friedenspreis geehrt wurde, über die Geschichten, Herausforderungen und Zukunftssaussichten Afrikas, insbesondere seines Heimatlandes Kenia. Rezension (ekz): Der kenianische Autor (Jahrgang 1938) ist mit seinen Lebenserinnerungen "Träume in Zeiten des Krieges" (2010) und "Im Haus des Hüters" (2013) bei uns bekannt geworden und (war?) für den Literatur-Nobelpreis im Gespräch. In diesem Buch sind sieben Essays und Vorträge aus der Zeit vor 2009 versammelt, die grundsätzliche Themen behandeln wie die Verschleierungsfunktion des Wortes "Stamm", die Geschichte und gegenwärtige Bedeutung von Sklaverei, die afrikanischen Intellektuellen und ihr Verhältnis zur Sprachenvielfalt, zur Globalisierung und zu Massenvernichtungswaffen. Den Essays liegt "der Ruf nach einer visionären, geeinten afrikanischen Führung zugrunde", was nicht bedeutet, dass die Tatsache von 50 durchaus unterschiedlichen afrikanischen Staaten und die vielfach noch bestehenden Diktaturen übergangen würden. - Das Buch mag als Hintergrundmaterial für die innerafrikanische Kritik an der Art der Dekolonisation und auch an der westlichen "Entwicklungshilfe" genutzt werden und wäre dann eine gute Ergänzung zur westlichen Kritik etwa bei V. Seitz in "Afrika wird armregiert" (2018). (2)

    Ottmar Ette’s TransArea proceeds from the thesis that globalization is not a recent phenomenon, but rather, a process of long duration that may be divided into four main phases of accelerated globalization. These phases connect our present, across the world’s widely divergent modern eras, to the period of early modern history. Ette demonstrates how the literatures of the world make possible a tangible perception of that which constitutes Life, both of our planet and on our planet, which may only be understood through the application of multiple logics. There is no substitute for the knowledge of literature: it is the knowledge of life, from life. This English translation will be of great interest to English-speaking scholars in the fields of Global and Area Studies, Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, History, Political Science, and many more. About the author Ottmar Ette has been Chair of Romance Literature at the University of Potsdam, Germany, since 1995. He is Honorary Member of the Modern Language Association of America (MLA) (elected in 2014), member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (elected in 2013), and regular member of the Academia Europaea (since 2010).

    Cinema and audiovisual media are integral to the culture, economy and social experience of the contemporary global city. But how has the relationship between cinema and the urban environment evolved in the era of digital technology, new media and globalization? And what are the critical tools and concepts with which we can grasp this vital interconnection between space and screen, viewer and built environment? Engaging with a rapidly transforming urban world, the contributions to this collection rethink the 'cinematic city' at a global scale. By presenting a global constellation of screen cities within one volume, the book encourages juxtapositions and comparisons across the North and South to capture the global city and its dynamics of exchange, hybridity, and circulation.     Bringing together leading critics and literary scholars, A New Vocabulary for Global Modernism argues for new ways of understanding the nature and development of twentieth-century literature and culture. Scholars have largely understood modernism as an American and European phenomenon. Those parameters have expanded in recent decades, but the incorporation of multiple origins and influences has often been tied to older conceptual frameworks that make it difficult to think of modernism globally. Providing alternative approaches, A New Vocabulary for Global Modernism introduces pathways through global archives and new frameworks that offer a richer, more representative set of concepts for the analysis of literary and cultural works.In separate essays each inspired by a critical term, this collection explores what happens to the foundational concepts of modernism and the methods we bring to modernist studies when we approach the field as a global phenomenon. Their work transforms the intellectual paradigms we have long associated with modernism, such as tradition, antiquity, style, and translation. New paradigms, such as context, slum, copy, pantomime, and puppets emerge as the archive extends beyond its European center. By analyzing Dionne Brand's Toronto, 'What We All Long For' (2005), Chang-rae Lee's New York, 'Native Speaker' (1995), and Karen Tei Yamashita's Los Angeles, 'Tropic of Orange' (1997), Melanie U. Pooch provides the connecting link for exploring the triad of globalization and its effects, global cities as cultural nodal points, and cultural diversity in a globalizing age as a literary phenomenon.
