    "After debuting in 1938, Superman soon became an American icon. But why has he maintained his iconic status for nearly 80 years? And how can he still be an American icon when the country itself has undergone so much change? Superman: Persistence of an American Icon examines the many iterations of the character in comic books, comic strips, radio series, movie serials, feature films, television shows, animation, toys, and collectibles over the past eight decades. Demonstrating how Superman's iconic popularity cannot be attributed to any single creator or text, comics expert Ian Gordon embarks on a deeper consideration of cultural mythmaking as a collective and dynamic process. He also outlines the often contentious relationships between the various parties who have contributed to the Superman mythos, including corporate executives, comics writers, artists, nostalgic commentators, and collectors. Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of Superman's appearances in comics and other media, Gordon also digs into comics archives to reveal the prominent role that fans have played in remembering, interpreting, and reimagining Superman's iconography. Gordon considers how comics, film, and TV producers have taken advantage of fan engagement and nostalgia when selling Superman products. Investigating a character who is equally an icon of American culture, fan culture, and consumer culture, Superman thus offers a provocative analysis of mythmaking in the modern era"... Aspects of the story, such as his Kryptonian origins, are so familiar to his audience that they require little explanation. But aspects of Superman's creation and authorship are often mythologized, and the reasons for his iconic status and long-term popularity little examined. Superman: The Persistence of an American Icon studies the origins of the character, his rapid success, and rise to an American icon. The book argues that Superman cannot be understood simply as a comic book character, indeed by 1940 he already appeared in several forms of media, but must be understood in his totality. His popularity cannot be tabulated by adding up all the instances of his appearance over the years, but rather lays in the way each appearance reinforces and calls on other appearances. Producers of Superman comic books, television series, and films have been aware of this and used nostalgic memories of earlier versions to appeal to audiences. Indeed one form of pleasure to be derived from any recent version of Superman is to recognize the source material or referents and take satisfaction in being in the know.     Abstract ; Der Bereich von Sterben, Tod und Trauer gehört als indirekte oder auch direkte Todeswirklichkeit zum Alltag von Vor- und Grundschulkindern. Seit den 1990er Jahren finden diese Themen zunehmend Eingang in die deutschsprachigen Bilderbücher und werden dort anhand verschiedener literarästhetischer Erzählstrategien auf der Text- sowie Bildebene und deren Wechselverhältnis diskutiert. Die vorliegende Untersuchung ordnet das Primärtextkorpus deutschsprachiger Bilderbücher zu Sterben, Tod und Trauer anhand eines untersuchungseigenen inhaltsbezogenen Rubrikenmodelles. Der für die qualitative Beurteilung der untersuchten Bilderbücher entwickelte Katalog von Analysekriterien berücksichtigt sowohl gattungsspezifische Forschungsarbeiten als auch Studien zum Verhältnis von Kind und Tod. Um in den Bilderbüchern tabuisierte, kanonisierte und innovative Erzählstrategien von Tod und Trauer nicht nur herauszuarbeiten, sondern auch komparatistisch in einen europäischen Kontext einzuordnen, wird der Untersuchung deutschsprachiger Bilderbücher die Diskussion der Entwicklung des Themenfeldes im schwedischen Bilderbuch gegenüber gestellt. Das Innovationspotenzial, das ausgewählte seit den 1970er Jahren veröffentlichte schwedische Bilderbücher für die Entwicklung des Themenbereiches Tod und Trauer im deutschsprachigen Bilderbuchmarkt besitzen, wird insbesondere in den Grenzbereichen zwischen tradierten sowie innovativen Erzählstrategien deutlich. Sowohl in den zusammenfassenden Betrachtungen der einzelnen inhaltsbezogenen Unterrubriken, die das deutschsprachige sowie schwedische Primärtextkorpus gliedern, als auch in den einzelanalytischen Abschnitten werden bestehende Kanonisierungs- sowie Tabuisierungstendenzen in Bezug auf die Darstellung einzelner Themenaspekte von Tod und Trauer deutlich, wenngleich diese zunehmend in Auflösung begriffen und in einigen Unterrubriken stärker ausgeprägt sind als in anderen. ; Abstract ; Dying, death and grief are a direct or indirect part of the reality of preschool and primary school children. Since the 1990s, these topics increasingly find their way into German picture books, where they are discussed using different literary-aesthetic narrative strategies through text and images as well as their interrelationship. The present study maps the primary text corpus of German picture books on dying, death and grief by means of a research-based content-related category model. The catalogue of analytic criteria developed for the qualitative assessment of the examined picture books takes into account both genre-specific research and studies on the attitudes of children toward death. In order not only to elaborate on tabooed, canonized and innovative narrative strategies of death and grief in picture books, but also to place them in a comparative European context, the study of German picture books is set against the discussion of the development of these topics in Swedish picture books. The innovation potential, which selected Swedish picture books published since the 1970s contain for the development of the theme of death and grief in the German picture book market, becomes particularly evident in the border areas between traditional and innovative narrative strategies. Both in the summary of the individual content-related subcategories, which classify the German and Swedish primary text corpuses, as well as in the individual analytic sections, existing tendencies to canonize or taboo with regard to the representation of individual aspects of death and grief become clear, though they are in a process of disintegration and are more pronounced in some subcategories than in others.

    ger: Die zweite Welle des Feminismus erfasste die USA in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren und wurde von den vielen Frauen getragen, die ihre Stimmen gegen die ungleiche Behandlung von Mann und Frau in verschiedenen Bereichen der Gesellschaft erhoben. In dieser Periode erschien auch eine Vielzahl literarischer Werke, in denen Autorinnen ihre Frustrationen, ihre Wünsche und ihre Forderungen zum Ausdruck brachten. Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit analysiert drei Werke dieser Periode: The Feminine Mystique von Betty Friedan, Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and as Institution von Adrienne Rich und Fear of Flying von Erica Jong. Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses steht dabei der in den Texten zum Ausdruck gebrachte Protest gegen das von der Gesellschaft der Nachkriegszeit kreiert Ideal, welches Frauen dazu anhielt vorrangig Hausfrau und Mutter zu sein. So sind die Werke von Friedan und Rich als Beitrag zur weiblichen Bewusstseinsbildung und als Herausforderung des in der Gesellschaft verankerten Status quo zu lesen. In Erica Jongs Roman verkörpert der Hauptcharakter den Protest gegen vorgegebene Rollenbilder und Annahmen zur weiblichen Sexualität. Als Grundlage für die Interpretation wird zu Beginn ein theoretischer Einblick in die zweite Welle des Feminismus geboten. In der Analyse konnte festgestellt werden, dass die Autorinnen, obwohl deren Werke jeweils einen anderen Fokus aufweisen, ihrem Protest ähnliche zu bekämpfende sozio-kulturelle Vorstellungen vom weiblichen Geschlecht zugrunde legten: Friedan fand diese im Konstrukt der femininen Mystik, Rich im Aspekt des Mutterseins und Jong in der Darstellung der weiblichen Sexualität. Gemeinsam ist den drei Autorinnen – wie die Diplomarbeit zeigt - auch, dass sie mit der Kraft ihrer literarischen Stimmen nicht unwesentlich zur Verbesserung der Stellung der Frau in der amerikanischen Gesellschaft der 1960er und 1970er Jahre beitrugen. eng: The women’s movement in the 1960s and 1970s in the United States has become known as the second wave of feminism. Many women raised their voices to alter society’s understanding of women and to end gender discrimination in various domains of society. Literature was one form, where women articulated their beliefs and desires to protest assumed gender roles. The aim of this thesis is to analyze three feminist writings of the period, The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan, Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and as Institution, and Fear of Flying by Erica Jong. These texts are interpreted as voices of female protest against the construction of the feminine ideal and as a self-confident declaration of female sexuality and embodiment. The analysis investigates how Betty Friedan and Adrienne Rich use their voices through their writings to raise consciousness and to question the status quo, as well as how Erica Jong - through a first person narrator - protests gender and sexual assumptions in American society. This analysis is based on a theoretical framework, which explains the context of Second Wave Feminism and significant theoretical approaches and concepts of feminist criticism crucial for the thesis. The analysis revealed that the writers challenged general social assumptions of femininity. The focus of each text, however, differs slightly. Betty Friedan’s focus is on the feminine mystique and “the problem that has no name,” Adrienne Rich deconstructs motherhood as a patriarchal institution, and Erica Jong’s focus lies on demonstrating female empowerment through sexuality. Nevertheless, the thesis illustrates that the three authors use the power of their female voices to construct an authentic picture of womanhood, motherhood and sexuality, which had significant impact on altering society’s beliefs on women.

More specifically, she focuses on queer negativity in the work of Lee Edelman, Jack Halberstam, and Lynne Huffer, and on the rhetoric of bad feelings found in the work of Sara Ahmed, Lauren Berlant, David Eng, Heather Love, and José Muñoz. Ruti highlights the ways in which queer theory's desire to opt out of normative society rewrites ethical theory and practice in genuinely innovative ways at the same time as she resists turning antinormativity into a new norm. This wide-ranging and thoughtful book maps the parameters of contemporary queer theory in order to rethink the foundational assumptions of the field

    By 1816, Japan had recovered from the famines of the 1780s and moved beyond the political reforms of the 1790s. Despite persistent economic and social stresses, the country seemed headed for a new period of growth. The idea that the shogunate would not last forever was far from anyone's mind.Yet, in that year, an anonymous samurai produced a scathing critique of Edo society. Writing as Buyo Inshi, "a retired gentleman of Edo," he expressed in An Account of What I Have Seen and Heard a profound despair with the state of the realm. Seeing decay wherever he turned, Buyo feared the world would soon descend into war.In his anecdotes, Buyo shows a sometimes surprising familiarity with the shadier aspects of Edo life. He speaks of the corruption of samurai officials; the suffering of the poor in villages and cities; the operation of brothels; the dealings of blind moneylenders; the selling and buying of temple abbotships; and the dubious strategies seen in law courts. Perhaps it was the frankness of his account that made him prefer to stay anonymous.A team of Edo specialists undertook the original translation of Buyo's work. This abridged edition streamlines this translation for classroom use, preserving the scope and emphasis of Buyo's argument while eliminating repetitions and diversions. It also retains the introductory essay that situates the work within Edo society and history
