    What legitimate form can history take when faced by the severe challenges issued in recent years by literary, rhetorical, multiculturalist, and feminist theories? That is the question considered in this long-awaited and pathbreaking book. Robert F. Berkhofer, Jr., addresses the essential practical concern of contemporary historians; he offers a way actually to go about reading and writing histories in light of the many contesting theories. Berkhofer ranges through a vast archive of recent writings by a broad range of authors. He explicates the opposing paradigms and their corresponding dilemmas by presenting in dialogue form the positions of modernists and postmodernists, formalists and deconstructionists, textualists and contextualists. Poststructuralism, the New Historicism, the New Anthropology, the New Philosophy of History - these and many other approaches are illuminated in new ways in these comprehensive, interdisciplinary explorations From them, Berkhofer arrives at a clear vision of the forms historical discourse might take, advocates a new approach to historical criticism, and proposes new forms of historical representation that encompass multiculturalism, poetics, and reflexive (con)textualization.     In Benjamin's Library, Jane O. Newman offers, for the first time in any language, a reading of Walter Benjamin's notoriously opaque work, Origin of the German Tragic Drama that systematically attends to its place in discussions of the Baroque in Benjamin's day. Taking into account the literary and cultural contexts of Benjamin's work, Newman recovers Benjamin's relationship to the ideologically loaded readings of the literature and political theory of the seventeenth-century Baroque that abounded in Germany during the political and economic crises of the Weimar years.To date, the significance of the Baroque for Origin of the German Tragic Drama has been glossed over by students of Benjamin, most of whom have neither read it in this context nor engaged with the often incongruous debates about the period that filled both academic and popular texts in the years leading up to and following World War I. Armed with extraordinary historical, bibliographical, philological, and orthographic research, Newman shows the extent to which Benjamin participated in these debates by reconstructing the literal and figurative history of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century books that Benjamin analyzes and the literary, art historical and art theoretical, and political theological discussions of the Baroque with which he was familiar. In so doing, she challenges the exceptionalist, even hagiographic, approaches that have become common in Benjamin studies. The result is a deeply learned book that will infuse much-needed life into the study of one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century

    Among his generation of intellectuals, the eighteenth-century German philosopher Johann Gottfried Herder is recognized both for his innovative philosophy of language and history and for his passionate criticism of racism, colonialism, and imperialism. A student of Immanuel Kant, Herder challenged the idea that anyone – even the philosophers of the Enlightenment – could have a monopoly on truth.In Herder: Aesthetics against Imperialism, John K. Noyes plumbs the connections between Herder’s anti-imperialism, often acknowledged but rarely explored in depth, and his epistemological investigations. Noyes argues that Herder’s anti-rationalist epistemology, his rejection of universal conceptions of truth, knowledge, and justice, constitutes the first attempt to establish not just a moral but an epistemological foundation for anti-imperialism.     Here Eduardo Cadava demonstrates that Walter Benjamin articulates his conception of history through the language of photography. Focusing on Benjamin's discussions of the flashes and images of history, he argues that the questions raised by this link between photography and history touch on issues that belong to the entire trajectory of his writings: the historical and political consequences of technology, the relation between reproduction and mimesis, images and history, remembering and forgetting, allegory and mourning, and visual and linguistic representation. The book establishes the photographic constellation of motifs and themes around which Benjamin organizes his texts and thereby becomes a lens through which we can begin to view his analysis of the convergence between the new technological media and a revolutionary concept of historical action and understanding. Written in the form of theses--what Cadava calls "snapshots in prose"--the book memorializes Benjamin's own thetic method of writing. It enacts a mode of conceiving history that is neither linear nor successive, but rather discontinuous--constructed from what Benjamin calls "dialectical images." In this way, it not only suggests the essential rapport between the fragmentary form of Benjamin's writing and his effort to write a history of modernity but it also skillfully clarifies the relation between Benjamin and his contemporaries, the relation between fascism and aesthetic ideology. It gives us the most complete picture to date of Benjamin's reflections on history

    Die beiden Aufsätze in diesem Buch haben ein gemeinsames philosophisches Anliegen. Während der erste Aufsatz einem Problem der systematischen Philosophie gewidmet ist, geht es im zweiten vor allem um die Interpretation einer spezifischen Fragestellung, die in einer bestimmten indischen philosophischen Tradition artikuliert wird. Im ersten Aufsatz konzentriert sich Oetke auf einen Fragenkomplex, der die Philosophie beschäftigt, seit ein Kreter behauptete, kein Kreter sage die Wahrheit. Da die Diskussion über die Familie der Wahrheitsparadoxa in der Logik und der analytischen Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts sehr intensiv geführt wurde, hätte man keine grundlegend neuen Einsichten in den Ursprung und die Reichweite dieser Paradoxa erwartet, und doch ist es genau das, was dieser Aufsatz bietet, indem er die Notwendigkeit betont, verschiedene Arten von Bedeutung zu unterscheiden. Der zweite Aufsatz befasst sich mit Fragen der Hermeneutik klassischer Texte. Ausgangspunkt ist Oetkes abschließender (unveröffentlichter) Kommentar zu einer Reihe von Artikeln im Journal of Indian Philosophy, die sich mit der Interpretation des sadvitīyaprayoga („Beweisformulierung, die ein Gegenstück nach sich zieht“) beschäftigen. Oetke verallgemeinert den Punkt seiner kritischen Beobachtungen, indem er die Relevanz der Anerkennung verschiedener Arten von Bedeutung und Interpretation in der Forschungsmethodik nicht nur in der Geschichte der indischen Philosophie aufzeigt. Sein Aufsatz ist ein wesentlicher Beitrag zur zeitgenössischen Literatur zur Methodologie in der Geschichte der Philosophie im Allgemeinen.

    Mit der Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von kulturellen Leistungen und ihrer Beschreibung im Werk Hans Blumenbergs wird in internationaler, die deutsche mit der amerikanischen Rezeption verschränkender Perspektive eine bisher unreflektierte Voraussetzung für ein Œuvre untersucht, das zu den einflussreichsten der deutschen Philosophie im 20. Jahrhundert gehört. Als ‚Phänomenologie der Geschichte‘ thematisiert dieses Werk kulturelle Leistungen und wählt dafür das Verfahren der Beschreibung. Insofern ‚Beschreibung‘ aus interdisziplinärer Sicht der Literaturwissenschaft als eine Praxis der Text- und Wissensgenerierung gelten kann, geht es insbesondere um die Frage, wie genau – bis in die rhetorisch-stilistische Faktur hinein – sich die Schreibverfahren dieses Autors den jeweiligen Gegenständen seiner Texte ‚anschmiegen‘ und welche Formen von Literarisierung sich dabei – entgegen einer weit verbreiteten philosophischen Nüchternheitsmaxime – beobachten lassen.

In the first essay Oetke focusses on a complex of questions that occupied philosophy ever since a Cretan asserted that no Cretan tells the truth. Since the discussion of the family of truth paradoxes was very intensive in 20th century logic and analytical philosophy, one would not have expected essentially new insights into the source and the range of those paradoxes, and yet this is exactly what this essay offers by emphasizing the need to distinguish different types of meaning. The second essay addresses issues in the hermeneutics of classical texts. It takes its start from Oetke's final (unpublished) comment on a series of articles in the Journal of Indian Philosophy that deal with the interpretation of the sadvitiyaprayoga (proof-formulation that entails a counterpart). Oetke generalizes the point of his critical observations by showing the relevance of acknowledging diverse types of both meaning and interpretation in the methodology of research not only in the history of Indian philosophy. His essay is a substantial contribution to the contemporary literature of methodology in the history of philosophy in general.
