    Women with Cameras (Anonymous) is a new artist's book by Anne Collier (born 1970), with a text by Hilton Als (winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism), that consists of a sequence of 80 images of found amateur photographs that each depict a female subject in the act of holding a camera or taking a photograph. Dating from the 1970s to the early 2000s, these artifacts of the pre-digital age were collected by Collier over a number of years from flea markets, thrift stores and online market places. Each of these photographs has, at some point in the recent past, been discarded by its original owner. The concept of "abandonment," of photographic images and the personal histories that they represent, is central to Women with Cameras (Anonymous), which amplifies photography's relationship with memory, melancholia and loss. The sequence of the images in Collier's book follows the format of her 35mm slide projection work 'Women with Cameras (Anonymous)' (2016), that was recently shown to great acclaim in Tokyo, Japan, and Basel, Switzerland

    ger: Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es durch eine quantitative Untersuchung Beweggründe und Ziele im Frauenfreizeitsport zu ermitteln. Dazu wurden mittels einer Fragebogenumfrage Frauen zu ihrem Freizeitsportverhalten und den dahinterliegenden Motiven befragt.Der einleitende theoretische Teil dieser Arbeit gliedert sich in drei Themengebiete: Freizeitwissenschaft- und Gestaltung, Sport und kommerzielle Sportanbieter. Zuerst wird ein Einblick in die Freizeitwissenschaft gegeben, sowie die Freizeitgestaltung- und Sport der Österreicher untersucht. Danach werden kommerzielle Sportanbieter mit Fokus auf Fitnessstudios angeschnitten. Zum Abschluss des Theorieteils sollen wichtige Begriffe der Motivationsforschung geklärt werden und somit die Basis für den empirischen Teil bilden. Im Rahmen der empirischen Untersuchung dieser Diplomarbeit wurden 596 Frauen zu ihrem Freizeitsport befragt. Mittels Fragebogenerhebung konnten dabei unter anderem Ergebnisse bezüglich der Motive zum Sporttreiben sowie für oder gegen eine Mitgliedschaft in einem Fitnessstudio gewonnen werden. Außerdem konnten durch die statistische Auswertung signifikante Unterschiede zwischen den drei Untersuchungsgruppen, die sich aus Frauenfitnessmitgliedern (N=114), Kundinnen in gemischten Studios (N= 87) sowie selbstorganisierten Sportlerinnen (N= 395) zusammensetzten, festgestellt werden. eng: The aim of the present diploma thesis is to examine the motives and goals in women’s leisure sports. A quantitative examination of questionnaires was carried out to investigate leisure sports behavior and underlying motives of women. The introductory theoretical part of this thesis consists of three main areas, namely leisure science, leisure activities such as sports in respect to Austria. In addition, sports providers especially fitness clubs are of interest and thus reviewed in a separate chapter. Furthermore, important terminology concerning motivation is discussed and forms the basis for the empirical part of the thesis. Within the framework of the empirical investigation of this diploma thesis, 596 women were surveyed about their leisure sports. Employing questionnaires, motives to sport participation as well as for or against a membership in a fitness club were examined. Additionally, significant differences between the three testing groups, consisting of fitness club members of women’s gyms (N=114) and mixed fitness clubs (N=87) as well as self-organized sportswomen (N=395) were detected in the process of the statistical analysis of the questionnaires.

    ger: Die zweite Welle des Feminismus erfasste die USA in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren und wurde von den vielen Frauen getragen, die ihre Stimmen gegen die ungleiche Behandlung von Mann und Frau in verschiedenen Bereichen der Gesellschaft erhoben. In dieser Periode erschien auch eine Vielzahl literarischer Werke, in denen Autorinnen ihre Frustrationen, ihre Wünsche und ihre Forderungen zum Ausdruck brachten. Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit analysiert drei Werke dieser Periode: The Feminine Mystique von Betty Friedan, Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and as Institution von Adrienne Rich und Fear of Flying von Erica Jong. Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses steht dabei der in den Texten zum Ausdruck gebrachte Protest gegen das von der Gesellschaft der Nachkriegszeit kreiert Ideal, welches Frauen dazu anhielt vorrangig Hausfrau und Mutter zu sein. So sind die Werke von Friedan und Rich als Beitrag zur weiblichen Bewusstseinsbildung und als Herausforderung des in der Gesellschaft verankerten Status quo zu lesen. In Erica Jongs Roman verkörpert der Hauptcharakter den Protest gegen vorgegebene Rollenbilder und Annahmen zur weiblichen Sexualität. Als Grundlage für die Interpretation wird zu Beginn ein theoretischer Einblick in die zweite Welle des Feminismus geboten. In der Analyse konnte festgestellt werden, dass die Autorinnen, obwohl deren Werke jeweils einen anderen Fokus aufweisen, ihrem Protest ähnliche zu bekämpfende sozio-kulturelle Vorstellungen vom weiblichen Geschlecht zugrunde legten: Friedan fand diese im Konstrukt der femininen Mystik, Rich im Aspekt des Mutterseins und Jong in der Darstellung der weiblichen Sexualität. Gemeinsam ist den drei Autorinnen – wie die Diplomarbeit zeigt - auch, dass sie mit der Kraft ihrer literarischen Stimmen nicht unwesentlich zur Verbesserung der Stellung der Frau in der amerikanischen Gesellschaft der 1960er und 1970er Jahre beitrugen. eng: The women’s movement in the 1960s and 1970s in the United States has become known as the second wave of feminism. Many women raised their voices to alter society’s understanding of women and to end gender discrimination in various domains of society. Literature was one form, where women articulated their beliefs and desires to protest assumed gender roles. The aim of this thesis is to analyze three feminist writings of the period, The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan, Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and as Institution, and Fear of Flying by Erica Jong. These texts are interpreted as voices of female protest against the construction of the feminine ideal and as a self-confident declaration of female sexuality and embodiment. The analysis investigates how Betty Friedan and Adrienne Rich use their voices through their writings to raise consciousness and to question the status quo, as well as how Erica Jong - through a first person narrator - protests gender and sexual assumptions in American society. This analysis is based on a theoretical framework, which explains the context of Second Wave Feminism and significant theoretical approaches and concepts of feminist criticism crucial for the thesis. The analysis revealed that the writers challenged general social assumptions of femininity. The focus of each text, however, differs slightly. Betty Friedan’s focus is on the feminine mystique and “the problem that has no name,” Adrienne Rich deconstructs motherhood as a patriarchal institution, and Erica Jong’s focus lies on demonstrating female empowerment through sexuality. Nevertheless, the thesis illustrates that the three authors use the power of their female voices to construct an authentic picture of womanhood, motherhood and sexuality, which had significant impact on altering society’s beliefs on women.

Die Arbeit untersucht Vermeers Darstellung der Frau und das von ihm entworfene Frauenbild und ordnet es in den Kontext der niederländischen Lebensrealität des 17. Jahrhunderts ein. Ausgehend von der Biografie Vermeers und in Auseinandersetzung mit den kulturellen, politischen und gesellschaftlichen Umständen jener Zeit, werden die Einflüsse und Auswirkungen auf seine Malerei und Motive besprochen. Bei der detaillierten Analyse ausgewählter Werke spielen sowohl ikonographische Aspekte als auch die einflussreiche zeitgenössische Emblemliteratur eine wichtige Rolle. Die Untersuchungen verdeutlichen den Zusammenhang gesellschaftlicher Konventionen und Vorstellungen mit der Genremalerei im Allgemeinen und den Werken Vermeers im Speziellen und legen das darin vermittelte Bild der Frau als ideologisches Konstrukt offen. eng: Women are unquestionably the main theme in Vermeer's genre paintings - an art genre which, in turn, makes up the bulk of the artist's oeuvre. The work examines Vermeer's portrayal of the woman and the female image he designed, and puts it into the context of the Dutch life of the 17th century. The influences and effects on Vermeer’s paintings and motifs are explained by taking his biography and the cultural, political and social conditions of that time into consideration. Iconographical aspects and the influential contemporary emblem literature play an important role in the detailed analysis of selected works. The investigation clarifies the connection between social conventions and conceptions with genre painting in general, and the works of Vermeer in particular to reveal the image of women therein as an ideological construct.

    Giulia Bigolina's (ca. 1516-ca. 1569) Urania (ca. 1552) is the oldest known prose romance to have been written by an Italian woman. In Kissing the Wild Woman, Christopher Nissen explores the unique aesthetic vision and innovative narrative features of Bigolina's greatest surviving work, in which she fashioned a new type of narrative that combined elements of the romance and the novella and included a polemical treatise on the moral implications of portraiture and the role of women in the arts. Demonstrating that Bigolina challenged cultural authority by rejecting the prevailing views of both painting and literature, Nissen discusses Bigolina's suggestion that painting constituted an ineffectual, even immoral mode of self-promotion for women in relation to the views of the contemporary writer Pietro Aretino and the painter Titian. Kissing the Wild Woman's analysis of this little-known work adds a new dimension to the study of Renaissance aesthetics in relation to art history, Renaissance thought, women's studies, and Italian literature

    How can humour and irony in writing both create and destroy boundaries? In the Belly of a Laughing God examines how eight contemporary Native women poets in Canada and the United States - Joy Harjo, Louise Halfe, Kimberly Blaeser, Marilyn Dumont, Diane Glancy, Jeannette Armstrong, Wendy Rose, and Marie Annharte Baker - employ humour and irony to address the intricacies of race, gender, and nationality. While recognizing that humour and irony are often employed as methods of resistance, this careful analysis also acknowledges the ways that they can be used to assert or restore order.Using the framework of humour and irony, five themes emerge from the words of these poets: religious transformations; generic transformations; history, memory, and the nation; photography and representational visibility; and land and the significance of 'home.' Through the double-voice discourse of irony and the textual surprises of humour, these poets challenge hegemonic renderings of themselves and their cultures, even as they enforce their own cultural norms

    In England in Europe, Elizabeth Tyler focuses on two histories: the Encomium Emmae Reginae, written for Emma the wife of the Æthelred II and Cnut, and The Life of King Edward, written for Edith the wife of Edward the Confessor. Tyler offers a bold literary and historical analysis of both texts and reveals how the two queens actively engaged in the patronage of history-writing and poetry to exercise their royal authority. Tyler’s innovative combination of attention to intertextuality and regard for social networks emphasizes the role of women at the centre of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman court literature. In doing so, she argues that both Emma and Edith’s negotiation of conquests and factionalism created powerful models of queenly patronage that were subsequently adopted by individuals such as Queen Margaret of Scotland, Countess Adela of Blois, Queen Edith/Matilda, and Queen Adeliza.
