    While the extraordinary cultural achievement of the renaissance has been object of praise and extensive study in the humanities, the dynamics forming its source have received surprisingly scant attention. It is the conviction underlying the essays in this collection that this cultural fertility was the effect of an increasing call for mental responsiveness to a plethora of new cultural stimuli. This dynamics of cultural intrusion and the concomitant adjustment considers power as an ordering system that is essentially relational. It is seen as resulting from a complex game which keeps a culture alive in a constant process of creative realigning. However, unlike Hegelian dialectics, this process does not en-visage a teleological evolution. Intrusion may come from any quarter and will leave its imprint whether we are disposed to regard its influence as positive or detrimental to our culture. Consequently, the result of adjustment is equally undirected and rich in potential. Above all, adjustment is always incomplete even if a stable state of alignment appears to have been reached; no act of adjustment can fully 'contain' the irritation of intrusion which remains pro-ductive throughout the cultural formation of a society. The essays in this volume focus on a broad variety of such intrusions in early modern drama ranging from intrusions of types and figures to the influence of new and often disconcerting philosophical concepts

    Wolfgang Wicht hat in den vierzig Jahren seiner Forschung ein weites Feld von Themen bearbeitet, das von Shakespeares Dramen bis zu postmodernen und postkolonialen Literaturen und Theoriekonzepten reicht. Im Zentrum stehen dabei die Vertreter der klassischen Moderne, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot und James Joyce, deren Werk er in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren durch seine literaturwissenschaftliche und herausgeberische Tätigkeit eine Rezeption und Resonanz verschaffte, die sich gegen den Strich orthodoxer Kanonbildungen, akademischer Curricula und privilegierter Forschungsinhalte in der DDR-Anglistik bewegten. Die in der Festschrift versammelten Beiträge spiegeln die Breite der Forschungsinteressen des Geehrten ebenso wie die Vielfalt der Freundschaften und wissenschaftlichen Kontakte und Kooperationen, die Wolfgang Wichts Forscherleben kennzeichnen. Der Titel des Bandes will nicht die thematische Geschlossenheit seines Œuvres würdigen, sondern ein Lebensthema und eine wissenschaftliche Haltung, die sich im Umgang mit Texten ebenso bewähr te wie in dem mit Institutionen und wechselnden Lebensumständen.     London was once the hub of an empire on which 'the sun never set.' After the second world war, as Britain withdrew from most of its colonies, the city that once possessed the world began to contain a diasporic world that was increasingly taking possession of it. Drawing on postcolonial theories ? as well as interdisciplinary perspectives from cultural geography, urban theory, history, and sociology ? Imagining London examines representations of the English metropolis in Canadian, West Indian, South Asian, and second-generation 'black British' novels written in the last half of the twentieth century. It analyzes the diverse ways in which London is experienced and portrayed as a transnational space by Commonwealth expatriates and migrants.As the former 'heart of empire' and a contemporary 'world city,' London metonymically represents the British Empire in two distinct ways. In the early years of decolonization, it is a primarily white city that symbolizes imperial power and history. Over time, as migrants from former colonies have 'reinvaded the centre' and changed its demographic and cultural constitution, it has come to represent empire geographically and spatially as a global microcosm. John Clement Ball examines the work of more than twenty writers, including established authors such as Robertson Davies, Mordecai Richler, Jean Rhys, Sam Selvon, V.S. Naipaul, Anita Desai, and Salman Rushdie, and newer voices such as Catherine Bush, David Dabydeen, Amitav Ghosh, Hanif Kureishi, and Zadie Smith
