    Abstract ; Die Arbeit untersucht Thomas Manns schriftstellerische Technik der Gestaltung von Romanfiguren nach Quellen, Vorbildern und Modellen und verwendet zur Beschreibung dieses Verfahrens den Begriff Porträt . Sie geht von der Tatsache aus, dass Thomas Mann auf autobiographische Erfahrungen und Erinnerungen an Verwandte, Freunde, Kollegen oder Zeitgenossen zurückgegriffen sowie Figuren, Szenerien und selbst kleinste Details nach Bildvorlagen gestaltet hat. Dabei geraten vier Bereiche ins Blickfeld, welche die verschiedenen Facetten der porträthaften Gestaltung der Figuren bei Thomas Manns ausmachen: Aus den Reaktionen der Betroffenen und des Umfelds, aus der konkreten Beschreibung der an Vorbildern orientierten Personen im Roman, aus der Analyse der dabei vorgenommenen Verschiebungen und Vertauschungen einzelner Züge sowie aus den Selbstdarstellungen des Autors ergibt sich eine Poetologie des literarischen Porträts. Vor dem Hintergrund der zeitgenössischen Kunstausübung in seinem Umfeld entfaltet sich Thomas Manns Verhältnis zur bildenden Kunst. Essayistische, briefliche oder sonstige Auseinandersetzungen Thomas Manns mit Kunst, Kunsttheorie sowie insbesondere der Gattung Porträt, vor allem aber seine Selbstaussagen und -definitionen lassen poetologische Positionen und Abgrenzungen sichtbar werden. Die vielfältigen Wechselbeziehungen, die sich in seinem Werk niederschlagen, manifestieren sich in den Begriffsfeldern Realismus, Wirklichkeits-Wiedergabe und Ähnlichkeit. Die Konzentration auf den Doktor Faustus sowie die Erfassung des gesamten Spektrums der im Roman verwirklichten Formen literarischer Porträts zeitigt eine neuartige Sicht auf die verschiedenen Deutungsebenen, die bislang auf den Roman angewendet wurden. Bei der Untersuchung der verschiedenen Schnittstellen zwischen gesellschaftlicher Wirklichkeit und literarischer Fiktion wird deutlich, dass das künstlerische Mittel des Porträts nicht nur jeweils dazu beiträgt, die einzelnen Schichten der sinnhaften Struktur zu konstituieren, sondern ein integraler Bestandteil des Romans ist. ; Abstract ; The dissertation examines Thomas Mann s literary technique of basing the characters in his novels on sources, examples and models, and uses the word portrait to describe this process. It is built around the fact that Thomas Mann in his work resorted to autobiographical experiences and memories of relatives, friends, colleagues and contemporaries, and also based figures, scenarios and even the smallest details on original images and pictures. In this context, four areas can be distinguished which account for the various facets of the portrait-like manner in which the characters of Thomas Mann are formed: from the reactions of the person concerned and the surroundings, from the precise description in the novel of the characters based on example, from the analysis of the permutations and combinations of individual features thus undertaken, and from the self-depictions of the author, a poetology of the literary portrait is formed. Against the background of the contemporary practice of art in his environs, Thomas Mann s affinity to fine arts blossomed. Not only Thomas Mann s essays, letters or other musings on art, art theory and especially genre portrayals, but above all his own statements and definitions allow poetological positions and demarcations to become visible. The numerous fluctuating relationships reflected in his works are manifested in the conceptual fields of realism, replication of reality, and similarity. By concentrating on Doctor Faustus while charting the entire spectrum of literary portrait forms applied in the novel, a whole new way of looking at the various levels of meaning used heretofore in the novel may be obtained. An examination of the various interfaces between social reality and literary fiction makes it apparent that the use of an artistic vehicle such as the portrait not only helps provide the individual layers with a meaningful structure, but is also in itself an integral part of the novel.

    Friedrich Maximilian Klinger's »Geschichte Biafars des Barmeciden« appeared in two parts between 1792 and 1794 and was the third volume in a planned cycle of ten philosophical novels. Though Klinger's engagement with Kant in this work met with a muted response from the critics, 1798 saw the publication of a revised and expanded edition of the novel. The last edition authorized by Klinger appeared in 1816 in the framework of the complete edition of his works. This new publication is based on the 1792-94 version and includes all variants authorized by Klinger.     In dieser Buchreihe wird das Leben eines spätmittelalterlichen Adeligen anhand historisch-diplomatisch edierter und jeweils kommentierter schriftlicher Lebenszeugnisse anschaulich gemacht. Bisher eher als Liederdichter bekannt, wird Oswald von Wolkenstein durch seinen Nachlass an Urkunden, Akten und Bildzeugnissen sowie durch Erwähnungen in zeitgenössischen Chroniken, Tagebüchern oder Rechnungsbüchern zu einem Exempel spätmittelalterlicher Adelsexistenz. Hatte der erste Band den aufstrebenden jüngeren Sohn aus ritterlicher Familie vorgestellt und der zweite seine Fehden, Gefangenschaften und Konfliktlösungen innerhalb eines sich festigenden Territoriums gezeigt, so führt der dritte Band aus, was ein solcher Adeliger erreichen konnte.Oswald von Wolkenstein präsentiert sich hier als Betreiber von Fehden und Freischöffe der Feme, als widerspenstiger Hochstiftsadeliger und wendiger Diener des Königs, als Träger hoher Auszeichnungen und vielseitiger Sonderbeauftragter, als umsichtiger Fürstenberater und zäher Prozessführer. Er spielt eine bedeutende Rolle im heimischen Rechtsleben und hat in der eigenen Familie die Position des Nachgeborenen weitgehend vergessen machen können

    The Heidelberg Passion Play as we have it dates back to 1514 and displays a number of unusual characteristics within the group of Hessian Passion Plays. It (a) represents an older Frankfurt play tradition, only recognized as such by study of the texts in parallel, (b) is the only one of the Hessian Passion Plays to contain 13 Old Testament prefigurations, and (c) occupies a strangely ambivalent position between the documentation or conception of a text for staging and a record of the text for reading purposes. This parallel-text edition is the first to document where the author drew on tradition and where we may assume he added passages of his own

    The volume contains Achim von Arnim's (1781-1831) writings during the period of his school and university education, between 1791 and 1800. With a few exceptions the texts are previously unpublished. They range from prescribed exercises and copied extracts to independently formulated essays and speeches on social, historical, philosophical and criminal law themes, partly with fictional or autobiographical content. The volume offers insight into Arnim's educational development, formatively influenced by the Late Enlightenment in Berlin, and documents both his interest in science and his inclination towards art.

    The volume contains Arnim's correspondence during his educational journey (1802-1804) and comprises 117 letters from his own hand (that have either come down to us or can be reconstructed) and 89 letters addressed to him, all provided here with detailed notes. A substantial portion of the edited texts is printed here either for the first time or for the first time in full (29 by Arnim and 28 to him). Arnim corresponded with members of his family and with acquaintances he made during the journey, among them some very striking women (Madame de Staël, Bettina Brentano, etc.). Most of the letters stem from the early exchange with Arnim's friend Clemens Brentano. This correspondence during the travel years was destined to become one of the most extraordinary examples of its kind in the whole history of German literature. Its significance rests largely in the magnificently unconventional nature of the letters, which rank as an unrivaled testimony to the phase of German Romanticism between the decline of the Jena period and the emergence of the Heidelberg period, a testimony that has yet to be fully appreciated for its originality. The letters are mainly literary in character, not merely because they contain poems, but above all in the way they reflect the idea of 'universal poetry' prominent in the aesthetics of early German Romanticism.

    The history of the contemplation of the heavens is at the same time a history of the hermeneutics of cosmic signs. Where literary observers of the universe look up to the heavens, interpretations of the self and the cosmos are necessarily bound up with the essential issue of the readability of signs. The cosmic moment is the moment in which texts reflect their own conditions of being. In the literature of the period from the mid 18th to mid 19th centuries we find reflections not only of the historically significant range of discoveries in the post-Copernican heavens, but also of the transition in aesthetic history from an aesthetics of mimesis to an aesthetics of autonomy.

    The facsimile of the Augsburg manuscript (1554) acquaints readers with the oldest known version of the texts and the melodies assembled in Adam Reißner's hymn book. As such, it is also the version that most closely reflects the author's intentions. The commentary on the 64 hymns takes a paradigmatic view of Reißner's hymn corpus, indicating how the traditions governing the various types of hymn and the melodies to which they were set (including medieval traditions, the Tenorlied, and the Bohemian Brothers) were transmitted by the Schwenckfeld hymn book. With reference to parallel corpora and individual instances of transmission, the commentary also traces the reception accorded to the texts and melodies of these 64 hymns as far as the 18th century.

    Friedrich Maximilian Klinger's »Geschichte Biafars des Barmeciden« appeared in two parts between 1792 and 1794 and was the third volume in a planned cycle of ten philosophical novels. Though Klinger's engagement with Kant in this work met with a muted response from the critics, 1798 saw the publication of a revised and expanded edition of the novel. The last edition authorized by Klinger appeared in 1816 in the framework of the complete edition of his works. This new publication is based on the 1792-94 version and includes all variants authorized by Klinger.     During the twelve years of the National Socialist regime in Germany, the relationship between the writers who left the country as emigrants and those who decided to stay was characterized by latent tensions. The former claimed that they were the only active literary opposition to stand up against Nazi Germany while the latter insisted that they impartially witnessed, in an attitude of passive hostility, what happened in the country. This tense relationship grew into an open dispute after World War II. It has been extensively outlined that this controversy has significantly influenced the development of German Literary theory in the post-war-period. Today, we should approach the writings of German exiles and "inner emigration" from a more rational perspective, ceasing to see this era only in the light of a subsequent literary controversy. The PhD thesis presented here aims at developing a set of such rational evaluation parameters which may serve to better understand selected writings of authors from exile and "inner emigration" in the historical context of National Socialism. An in-depth review of three novels (Werner Bergengruen, Der Großtyrann und das Gericht; Ernst Glaeser, der letzte Zivilist; Ernst Weiß, Der Augenzeuge) will analyze to which extend an omnipresent Nazi propaganda and a strong NS symbolism influenced the work of these three authors - regardless of where they wrote, in their mother country or from exile`s perspective.
