"It is often argued that a new form of committed literature is needed. Embracing the 18th-century Romantic idea of aesthetic autonomy, literature is believed to have turned its back to everyday social and political reality. One of the central questions occupying contemporary literary debates is therefore whether literary autonomy is essential to modern literature ('autonomism') or should be abandoned ('anti-autonomism'). Aukje van Rooden argues that the debate between autonomists and anti-autonomists cannot be anything but a fruitless tug-of-war, because it is based on a distorted historical picture. In order to make sense of the social relevance of contemporary literature, a new theoretical paradigm has to be formulated. Literature, Autonomy and Commitment not only offers an historical-conceptual reconstruction of the Romantic paradigm and the theoretical impasse it has created, but also sketches the outline of a new paradigm, called 'the relational paradigm', based on the relational ontologies developed in 20th- and 21st-century philosophy."--Bloomsbury Publishing Preface -- Introduction -- The romantic paradigm -- Janus-faced modernity -- The relational paradigm.

"This volume makes a significant contribution to both the study of Derrida and of modernist studies. The contributors argue, first, that deconstruction is not "modern"; neither is it "postmodern" nor simply "modernist." They also posit that deconstruction is intimately connected with literature, not because deconstruction would be a literary way of doing philosophy, but because literature stands out as a "modern" notion. The contributors investigate the nature and depth of Derrida's affinities with writers such as Joyce, Kafka, Antonin Artaud, Georges Bataille, Paul Celan, Maurice Blanchot, Theodor Adorno, Samuel Beckett, and Walter Benjamin, among others. With its strong connection between philosophy and literary modernism, this highly original volume advances modernist literary study and the relationship of literature and philosophy."-- -- Trickster economy: Derrida's Baudelaire, and the role of money, counterfeits, and alms in the modern city / Marit Grøtta -- Kant's celestial economy; a footnote to the gift of death / Eddis N. Miller -- Derrida and Kafka: a Talmudic disputation before the law / Vivian Liska -- Derrida with Heidegger: poetic language, animality, world / Jennifer Anna Gosetti-Ferencei -- To wound the language: Derrida reads Celan / Miriam Jerade -- Derrida's Joyce / Sam Slote -- Derrida re-voicing Artaud / Alhelí Alvarado -- Derrida on Bataille: from dueling to duet / Claire Lozier -- A cross in the margin, inscription and erasure in Derrida and Pound / Mark Byron -- Derrida after Valéry (after Derrida) / Suzanne Guerlac -- Three ways of looking at Derrida's encounter with Austin / Raoul Moati -- Writing in the shadow of Sartre's Genet, Derrida's Glas and the ethics of biography / Robert Doran -- Derrida, Cixous, and (feminine) writing / Marta Segarra -- Reading between the lines: Derrida, Blanchot, Beckett / Leslie Hill.

Cover -- Preface -- Acknowledgments -- 1 Postmodernism and the Rest of the World -- 2 The Use and Abuse of Multiculturalism -- 3 Globalization, Desire, and the Politics of Representation -- 4 Derivative Discourses and the Problem of Signification -- 5 Theory in an Uneven World -- Notes. How can we handle the unevenness between the West and the Rest? How inevitable is the binary logic of winners and losers? How can theory help us resolve our ethical and political problems? Can theory help us think beyond the "winner takes all" model by articulating strong connections between ethics and politics? This major intervention into debates about the postcolonial and the global proposes that theory should embody unevenness as symptom even as it envisions strategies to get beyond unevenness. Radhakrishnan's thought-provoking engagement with theorists and writers from around the world will fascinate readers across a wide range of disciplines

"What is the relationship between theory and practice in the creative arts today? In this book, Martin McQuillan offers a critical interrogation of the idea of practice-led research. He goes beyond the recent vocabulary of research management to consider the more interesting question of the emergence of a cultural space in which philosophy, theory, history and practice are becoming indistinguishable. McQuillan considers the work of a number of writers and thinkers who cross the divide between theoretical and creative practice, including Alain Badiou and Terry Eagleton, and the longer tradition of 'theory-writing' that runs through the work of Hélène Cixous, Roland Barthes and Louis Althusser. His aim is to elucidate the contemporary ramifications of a relationship that has been contested throughout the long history of philosophy, from Plato's dialogues to Derrida's 'Envois' " -- Introduction: Practice is not what you think -- Part I. 1. Theory and Practice: from Kant to Plato -- 2. The last chapter of the history of the world -- 3. Blindness and Touching -- 4. Prometheus and Pygmalion -- 5. Creation and Innovation -- Part 2. 6. 1975 to 1871 -- 7. Derrida queries de Man.
