The volume contains a collection of 29 articles from the last years of Walter Haug's life, in particular theoretical literary and historical philosophical studies on the courtly romance and on mysticism, which are drawn closely together from the aspect of negativity. In addition, it includes texts on the heroic epic, Märendichtung (medieval fables) and many others, and through six speeches and tributes affords a very personal insight into Walter Haug as a scholar and as a man.

"It is often argued that a new form of committed literature is needed. Embracing the 18th-century Romantic idea of aesthetic autonomy, literature is believed to have turned its back to everyday social and political reality. One of the central questions occupying contemporary literary debates is therefore whether literary autonomy is essential to modern literature ('autonomism') or should be abandoned ('anti-autonomism'). Aukje van Rooden argues that the debate between autonomists and anti-autonomists cannot be anything but a fruitless tug-of-war, because it is based on a distorted historical picture. In order to make sense of the social relevance of contemporary literature, a new theoretical paradigm has to be formulated. Literature, Autonomy and Commitment not only offers an historical-conceptual reconstruction of the Romantic paradigm and the theoretical impasse it has created, but also sketches the outline of a new paradigm, called 'the relational paradigm', based on the relational ontologies developed in 20th- and 21st-century philosophy."--Bloomsbury Publishing Preface -- Introduction -- The romantic paradigm -- Janus-faced modernity -- The relational paradigm.

"This volume makes a significant contribution to both the study of Derrida and of modernist studies. The contributors argue, first, that deconstruction is not "modern"; neither is it "postmodern" nor simply "modernist." They also posit that deconstruction is intimately connected with literature, not because deconstruction would be a literary way of doing philosophy, but because literature stands out as a "modern" notion. The contributors investigate the nature and depth of Derrida's affinities with writers such as Joyce, Kafka, Antonin Artaud, Georges Bataille, Paul Celan, Maurice Blanchot, Theodor Adorno, Samuel Beckett, and Walter Benjamin, among others. With its strong connection between philosophy and literary modernism, this highly original volume advances modernist literary study and the relationship of literature and philosophy."-- -- Trickster economy: Derrida's Baudelaire, and the role of money, counterfeits, and alms in the modern city / Marit Grøtta -- Kant's celestial economy; a footnote to the gift of death / Eddis N. Cover -- Preface -- Acknowledgments -- 1 Postmodernism and the Rest of the World -- 2 The Use and Abuse of Multiculturalism -- 3 Globalization, Desire, and the Politics of Representation -- 4 Derivative Discourses and the Problem of Signification -- 5 Theory in an Uneven World -- Notes. How can we handle the unevenness between the West and the Rest? How inevitable is the binary logic of winners and losers? How can theory help us resolve our ethical and political problems? Can theory help us think beyond the "winner takes all" model by articulating strong connections between ethics and politics? This major intervention into debates about the postcolonial and the global proposes that theory should embody unevenness as symptom even as it envisions strategies to get beyond unevenness. Radhakrishnan's thought-provoking engagement with theorists and writers from around the world will fascinate readers across a wide range of disciplines

"What is the relationship between theory and practice in the creative arts today? In this book, Martin McQuillan offers a critical interrogation of the idea of practice-led research. He goes beyond the recent vocabulary of research management to consider the more interesting question of the emergence of a cultural space in which philosophy, theory, history and practice are becoming indistinguishable. McQuillan considers the work of a number of writers and thinkers who cross the divide between theoretical and creative practice, including Alain Badiou and Terry Eagleton, and the longer tradition of 'theory-writing' that runs through the work of Hélène Cixous, Roland Barthes and Louis Althusser. His aim is to elucidate the contemporary ramifications of a relationship that has been contested throughout the long history of philosophy, from Plato's dialogues to Derrida's 'Envois' " -- Introduction: Practice is not what you think -- Part I. 1. Theory and Practice: from Kant to Plato -- 2. The last chapter of the history of the world -- 3. Blindness and Touching -- 4. Prometheus and Pygmalion -- 5. Creation and Innovation -- Part 2. 6. 1975 to 1871 -- 7. Derrida queries de Man.

Frontmatter -- CONTENTS -- Acknowledgments -- Prologue: What This Book Is and Is Not About -- Introduction: The Radical Historicity of Literary Theory -- 1. Russian Formalism: Entanglements at Birth and Later Reverberations -- 2. A Skeptic at the Cradle of Theory: Gustav Shpet’s Reflections on Literature -- 3. Toward a Philosophy of Culture: Bakhtin beyond Literary Theory -- 4. The Boundaries of Modernity: Semantic Paleontology and Its Subterranean Impact -- 5. Interwar Exiles: Regimes of Relevance in Émigré Criticism and Theory -- Epilogue: A Fast-Forward to “World Literature” -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index Until the 1940s, when awareness of Russian Formalism began to spread, literary theory remained almost exclusively a Russian and Eastern European invention. The Birth and Death of Literary Theory tells the story of literary theory by focusing on its formative interwar decades in Russia. Nowhere else did literary theory emerge and peak so early, even as it shared space with other modes of reflection on literature. A comprehensive account of every important Russian trend between the world wars, the book traces their wider impact in the West during the 20th and 21st centuries. Ranging from Formalism and Bakhtin to the legacy of classic literary theory in our post-deconstruction, world literature era, Galin Tihanov provides answers to two fundamental questions: What does it mean to think about literature theoretically, and what happens to literary theory when this option is no longer available? Asserting radical historicity, he offers a time-limited way of reflecting upon literature—not in order to write theory's obituary but to examine its continuous presence across successive regimes of relevance. Engaging and insightful, this is a book for anyone interested in theory's origins and in what has happened since its demise

Driven by global economic forces to innovate, today's society paradoxically looks forward to the future while staring only at the nearest, most local present-the most recent financial quarter, the latest artistic movement, the instant message or blog post at the top of the screen. Postmodernity is lived, it seems, at the end of history. In the essays collected in Local Transcendence, Alan Liu takes the pulse of such postmodern historicism by tracking two leading indicators of its acceleration in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries: postmodern cultural criticism-including the new historicism, the new cultural history, cultural anthropology, the new pragmatism, and postmodern and postindustrial theory-and digital information technology. What is the relation between the new historicist anecdote and the database field, Liu asks, and can either have a critical function in the age of postmodern historicism? Local Transcendence includes two previously unpublished essays and a synthetic introduction in which Liu traverses from his earlier work on the theory of historicism to his recent studies of information culture to propose a theory of contingent method incorporating a special inflection of history: media history. Intro -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction: Contingent Methods -- 1 The Power of Formalism: The New Historicism -- 2 Trying Cultural Criticism: Wordsworth and Subversion -- 3 Local Transcendence: Cultural Criticism, Postmodernism, and the Romanticism of Detail -- 4 Remembering the Spruce Goose: Historicism, Postmodernism, Romanticism -- 5 The New Historicism and the Work of Mourning -- 6 The Interdisciplinary War Machine -- 7 Sidney's Technology: A Critique by Technology of Literary History -- 8 Transcendental Data: Toward a Cultural History and Aesthetics of the New Encoded Discourse -- 9 Escaping History: The New Historicism, Databases, and Contingency -- Notes -- Works Cited -- Index.

This book is the first in-depth monograph on one of the most celebrated German literary theorists of the 20th century. Via an accessible analysis of Iser's complete English and German writings, this study explains his acclaimed reception theory and connects the famous notions of 'blanks' and the 'implied reader' to his earlier and later work on English literature and literary anthropology. Iser's views are also compared to those of related thinkers like Hans Blumenberg and illustrated with examples from contemporary authors like Hilary Mantel. Ben De Bruyn, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.
