McLaughlin, Joan Ormrod, Laura A. Pearson, Annick Pellegrin, Mihaela Precup, Jason Sacks, and Ruth-Ellen St. Onge. This overview of the history of Canadian comics explores acclaimed as well as unfamiliar artists. Contributors look at the myriad ways that English-language, Francophone, indigenous, and queer Canadian comics and cartoonists pose alternatives to American comics, to dominant perceptions, even to gender and racial categories. In contrast to the United States' melting pot, Canada has been understood to comprise a social, cultural, and ethnic mosaic, with distinct cultural variation as part of its identity. This volume reveals differences that often reflect in highly regional and localized comics such as Paul MacKinnon's Cape Breton...specific Old Trout Funnies, Michel Rabagliati's Montreal-based Paul comics, and Kurt Martell and Christopher Merkley's Thunder Bay...specific zombie apocalypse. The collection also considers some of the conventionally "alternative" cartoonists, namely Seth, Dave Sim, and Chester Brown. It offers alternate views of the diverse and engaging work of two very different Canadian cartoonists who bring their own alternatives into play: Jeff Lemire in his bridging of Canadian/US and mainstream/alternative sensibilities and Nina Bunjevac in her own blending of realism and fantasy as well as of insider/outsider status. Despite an upsurge in research on Canadian comics, there is still remarkably little written about most major and all minor Canadian cartoonists.     ger: Als die ersten männlichen chinesischen Immigranten Ende der 1840er in Kalifornien eintrafen, wurden sie von der etablierten angelsächsischen Bevölkerung schnell mit Misstrauen belegt, als Fremdkörper betrachtet und in weiterer Folge zum Feindbild erklärt. In den Medien tauchten verzerrte Bilder von chinesischen Immigranten auf, die die negativen Ressentiments verstärkten: Darstellungen von männlichen Chinesen als Ratten verspeisende, Opium rauchende, skrupellose Betrüger, als laszive Verführer wehrloser, amerikanischer Frauen und als Verehrer heidnischer Götzen. Diese Klischeebilder schürten anti-chinesische Hetze und ebneten den Weg zum Chinese Exclusion Act 1882, der die Chinesen als erste Einwanderungsgruppe aufgrund ihrer "Rasse" von der Einwanderung in die USA bis 1943 ausschloss. Der Hauptteil der Arbeit umfasst eine Analyse verschiedener Darstellungsweisen chinesischer Immigranten in populären Cartoons aus der zweiten Hälfte des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts. Die Untersuchung selbiger hat in Folge die These entstehen lassen, dass der chinesische Migrant in drei archetypischen Formen in Erscheinung tritt: als der "Heathen Chinee", der "Coolie" und der "Illegal Immigrant". Die Konzepte 'race' und 'masculinity' fungieren als analytische Basis zur Erläuterung der Illustrationen. In Detailanalysen werden die Besonderheiten jedes einzelnen Typus freigelegt, gleichzeitig wird auf die verbindliche gemeinsame Struktur der Illustrationen hingewiesen, was die These belegt, dass der chinesisch-amerikanische Mann weder als "American enough", noch als "man enough" dargestellt wird. Nicht zuletzt weist diese Arbeit darauf hin, dass der "Heathen Chinee", der "Coolie" und der "Illegal Immigrant" in kontemporären Repräsentationen, wenngleich in evolvierter Form, zu finden sind. eng: California's first encounter with Chinese immigrants in the late 1840s quickly led to the idea that the newcomers were essentially distinct form the 'American character'. Both the media and the state played an active role in creating the view that the Chinese immigrant was not only different, but deficient and an imminent threat to the entire fabric of the American society. Images portraying the 'Oriental' as racially inferior and debased, as rat eater, worshipper of pagan idols, opium addict, wily trickster or seducer of white women, perpetuated popular media during the nineteenth century. Not only did these negative figurations heighten anti-Chinese sentiments and pave the path to the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882?which banned the entry of all Chinese immigrants with the exception of a few carefully defined classes?these figurations also created pervasive perceptions of Chinese Americans that largely contributed to limit their economic, racial and social opportunities in the United States. "Not American Enough, not Man Enough" argues that the attitude that singled out the Chinese from other immigrants as 'peculiar' was grounded on prevailing perspectives about the nature of race, class and gender. The major part of this work presents a theoretically informed analysis of political cartoons from the latter half of the nineteenth century. I identify three 'archetypical' images of Chinese American men in these representations: the "Heathen Chinee", the "Coolie" and the "Illegal Immigrant". I argue that the three major 'guises' reserved for the Chinese male Other, rendered him as neither 'American enough', nor 'man enough'. Finally, I suggest that over the course of the twentieth century, staples of the archetypical characters of the 'heathen', the 'coolie' and the 'illegal immigrant' reemerged in various forms in mass culture.

    "A rich visual history that traces Twain's distinguished depictions in newspaper and magazine illustrations. Cartoons and Caricatures of Mark Twain: Reformer and Social Critic, 1869-1910 is the first monograph to explore the production, reception, and history of Mark Twain's public persona through the contextualization of the vast collection of cartoons and caricatures penned in his likeness throughout his life, career, and even death. Tracing Twain's depiction across more than seventy illustrations, this work offers a new lens through which to study the famous writer and social critic. Already a popular subject of photography, as printing technologies advanced, Mark Twain found himself to also be a popular muse for newspaper and magazine illustrators. Between 1869 and his death in 1910, Twain was the subject of more than six hundred caricatures and cartoons published around the world. Instantly recognizable by his overemphasized mustache and bushily-drawn eyebrows, it was not just the familiarity of his image that made him a regular feature in visual commentary, but also his willingness to speak out against corruption and to insert himself into controversies of his day. Unlike photographs, these illustrations stripped him of his ability to manipulate his public perception and control his brand, providing a more authentic look at his contentious reputation in the 19th and 20th century political sphere and the significance of his reception around the world. Along with his legacy, Twain left behind an archive brimming with evidence of a rich print culture and history that has not, until now, been scrutinized. Cartoons and Caricatures of Mark Twain offers a carefully curated collection of these illustrations and thought-provoking contextual material with which to examine Twain's global reputation and reception"--
