    Addressing all readers who value the beauty of language, Anna Balakian examines the work of five twentieth-century poets--Yeats, Valry, Rilke, Stevens, and Guilln--to show how the linguistic richness of the symbolist tradition continued well into the modern period. These writers, all of whom learned the poetry of language from Mallarm, compensated for the disappearance of metaphysical inclinations in early twentieth-century poetry by instituting a poetic fiction. Balakian finds the immersion of the "I" and its altered reflection in the work of art to be a common feature of their poetry, and explores how they replaced the conventional meaning of signifiers grown stale, such as the abused word "poet," which became musician, artist, dancer, acrobat, mime, tapestry weaver, rider of the earth and the skies.

    In the works of these poets, the symbol evolved into a selective system of communication that identified implicitly the realms of human dilemma in regard to time, space, place, and reality in an indifferent universe. Balakian explains how the poets made language posit the major problems of existence and survival through metaphors of transition and, with the polysemy of their discourse, spoke to each reader on his or her terms.     Family Secrets and the Psychoanalysis of Narrative is the first book to explore the implications of the psychoanalytic theory of the phantom for the study of narrative literature. A phantom is formed when a shameful, unspeakable secret is unwittingly transmitted, through cryptic language and behavior, transgenerationally from one family member to another. The "haunted" individual to whom the "encrypted" secret is communicated becomes the unwitting medium for someone else's voice--and the result is speech and conduct that appear incongruous or obsessive in a variety of ways. Through close readings of texts by Conrad, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Balzac, James, and Poe, Esther Rashkin reveals how shameful secrets, concealed within the unspoken family histories of fictive characters, can be reconstructed from their linguistic traces and can be shown not only to drive the characters' speech and behavior but also to generate their narratives.

    First articulated by the French psychoanalysts Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok, the theory of the phantom here represents a radical departure from Freudian, Lacanian, and other psychoanalytic approaches to literary interpretation.     François Villon hat keine Gedichte über das Thema Paris, sondern aus der Perspektive eines "enfant de Paris" eine vom gutmütigen Spott bis zum bitteren Hohn reichende Satire über die Einwohner der Stadt und ihr Zusammenleben verfasst. Diejenigen, die im Testament nicht verhöhnt und degradiert, sondern mit freundlichem Spott bedacht oder sogar gewarnt werden, vertreten gesellschaftliche Randgruppen. Im Unterschied zu einem seiner Vorgänger, Eustache Deschamps, hat Villon das Leben in Paris der Darstellung von Arm und Reich untergeordnet. Villon hat die Gemeinplätze, die seinen Versen und den Werken von Deschamps zugrunde liegen, in Emblemata transformiert und deren Bildelemente der Stadt Paris entnommen; für die Ständesatire hat er die Personifizierung besonders kunstvoll eingesetzt. Deschamps hat seine Gedichte über Tugenden und Laster aus der Perspektive einer strengen Rechtssprechung verfasst; der Sprecher des Testament hat eine verkehrte Welt aus der Perspektive eines Unterprivilegierten, eines Vertreters der Randgruppen dargestellt.
