    „Mit dem Schönen ist es ganz anders bewandt.“ Aber wie ist es mit ihm bewandt? Das, so Kant, kann allein die Analyse des Urteils, durch das wir Schönheit zusprechen, offenbaren. Den oft steinigen und mit allerlei Fallstricken versehenen Weg dieser Analyse nachzuzeichnen, um zu erkennen, wie Kant zum Begriff der Schönheit als Form der Zweckmäßigkeit ohne Zweck gelangt und was dieser Begriff genau bedeutet, ist nach wie vor sehr lohnend. Allerdings gilt es dabei, Kant gegen sich selbst in Schutz zu nehmen und den Kern seiner Ästhetik von sehr viel Beiwerk zu befreien, das mit der Sache nichts zu tun hat. – In einem Anhang zu dieser Auseinandersetzung mit der Kritik der ästhetischen Urteilskraft wird der enge Zusammenhang zwischen Kants Text und Humes Abhandlung über die „Grundregel des Geschmacks“ aufgezeigt. It is quite different with the beautiful. But what about it, then? According to Kant, this can only be revealed by analyzing the judgment by which we attribute beauty. Tracing the often rocky path of this analysis, fraught with all sorts of pitfalls, in order to see how Kant arrives at the concept of beauty as a form of purposiveness without purpose, and what exactly this concept means, is still very rewarding. However, in doing so, it is important to defend Kant against himself and to rid the core of his aesthetics of a great deal of incidental material that has nothing to do with the matter at hand. – In an appendix to this discussion of the „Critique of Aesthetic Judgment“, the author demostrates the close connection that exists between Kant's text and Hume's treatise „On the Standard of Taste".

    This engaging and insightful book explores the fate of eloquence in a period during which it both denoted a living oratorical art and served as a major factor in political thought. Seeing Hume's philosophy as a key to the literature of the mid-eighteenth century, Adam Potkay compares the staus of eloquence in Hume's Essays and Natural History of Religion to its status in novels by Sterne, poems by Pope and Gray, and Macpherson's Poems of Ossian.Potkay explains the sense of urgency that the concept of eloquence evoked among eighteenth-century British readers, for whom it recalled Demosthenes exhorting Athenian citizens to oppose tyranny. Revived by Hume and many other writers, the concept of eloquence resonated deeply for an audience who perceived its own political community as being in danger of disintegration. Potkay also shows how, beginning in the realm of literature, the fashion of polite style began to eclipse that of political eloquence. An ethos suitable both to the family circle and to a public sphere that included women, "politeness" entailed a sublimation of passions, a "feminine modesty as opposed to "masculine" display, and a style that sought rather to placate or stabilize than to influence the course of events. For Potkay, the tension between the ideals of ancient eloquence and of modern politeness defined literary and political discourses alike between 1726 and 1770: although politeness eventually gained ascendancy, eloquence was never silenced

    Empirismus und Ästhetik werden in den Schriften von Francis Hutcheson, David Hume, Edmund Burke und Henry Home zu einer empiristischen Ästhetik verbunden. Sie argumentiert induktiv, psycho- oder physiologisch, evolutionär und demokratisch und lässt sich als frühe Form der empirischen Ästhetik verstehen. Ihr Transfer nach Deutschland in Rezensionen, Übersetzungen und Anschlussforschungen geht mit unwillkürlichen Anpassungen einher. Für die empiristische Ästhetik in der deutschsprachigen Aufklärung stehen nicht nur Namen wie Lichtenberg, Mendelssohn und Kant, Hamann, Herder und Merck, sondern auch die Übersetzer Dusch, Resewitz und Meinhard, die physiologisch Interessierten Haller, Platner, Lossius und Hißmann sowie die Leipziger Engel, Garve und Riedel, der Prager Meißner oder auch Enzyklopädisten wie Herz, Eschenburg und Schneider Francis Hutcheson, David Hume, Edmund Burke, and Henry Home combined empiricism and aesthetics to create an empiricist aesthetics that was received and transformed in the German-speaking world. In the tradition of John Locke, an explanation of thinking and association that is grounded in sensualism takes center stage

    „Mit dem Schönen ist es ganz anders bewandt.“ Aber wie ist es mit ihm bewandt? Das, so Kant, kann allein die Analyse des Urteils, durch das wir Schönheit zusprechen, offenbaren. Den oft steinigen und mit allerlei Fallstricken versehenen Weg dieser Analyse nachzuzeichnen, um zu erkennen, wie Kant zum Begriff der Schönheit als Form der Zweckmäßigkeit ohne Zweck gelangt und was dieser Begriff genau bedeutet, ist nach wie vor sehr lohnend. Allerdings gilt es dabei, Kant gegen sich selbst in Schutz zu nehmen und den Kern seiner Ästhetik von sehr viel Beiwerk zu befreien, das mit der Sache nichts zu tun hat. – In einem Anhang zu dieser Auseinandersetzung mit der Kritik der ästhetischen Urteilskraft wird der enge Zusammenhang zwischen Kants Text und Humes Abhandlung über die „Grundregel des Geschmacks“ aufgezeigt. It is quite different with the beautiful. But what about it, then? According to Kant, this can only be revealed by analyzing the judgment by which we attribute beauty. Tracing the often rocky path of this analysis, fraught with all sorts of pitfalls, in order to see how Kant arrives at the concept of beauty as a form of purposiveness without purpose, and what exactly this concept means, is still very rewarding. However, in doing so, it is important to defend Kant against himself and to rid the core of his aesthetics of a great deal of incidental material that has nothing to do with the matter at hand. – In an appendix to this discussion of the „Critique of Aesthetic Judgment“, the author demostrates the close connection that exists between Kant's text and Hume's treatise „On the Standard of Taste".

    Focussing on three major eighteenth-century English novelists, Carol Kay explores the connections between institutional politics, political philosophy, and fiction. Drawing from Hobbes's Leviathan a political "problematic," a complex of interconnected topics, Kay offers an alternative to current critical theories that overlook the importance of political institutions in literary analysis. She considers Hobbes's though a key to what has been called the growth of political stability in England during this period, a consolidation of national authority which was brutal in some respects and a matter of intense controversy. Political Constructions shows how the fictional creations of Defoe, Richardson, and Sterne challenge but ultimately support Hobbes's diagnosis of a fundamental human ignorance and competition which require the political solution of consent to authority. Although they testified to the potential for social conflict, Kay concludes, the works of novelists and philosophers helped make England the prototype of the settled state, the country that did not have a modern revolution

    Modes of address are forms of signification that we direct at living beings, things, and places, and they at us and at each other. Seeing is a form of address. So are speaking, singing, and painting. Initiating or responding to such calls, we participate in encounters with the world. Widely used yet less often examined in its own right, the notion of address cries out for analysis.Monique Roelofs offers a pathbreaking systematic model of the field of address and puts it to work in the arts, critical theory, and social life. She shows how address props up finely hewn modalities of relationality, agency, and normativity. Address exceeds a one-on-one pairing of cultural productions with their audiences. As ardently energizing tiny slippages and snippets as fueling larger impulses in the society, it activates and reaestheticizes registers of race, gender, class, coloniality, and cosmopolitanism. In readings of writers and artists ranging from Julio Cortázar to Jamaica Kincaid and from Martha Rosler to Pope.L, Roelofs demonstrates the centrality of address to freedom and a critical political aesthetics. Under the banner of a unified concept of address, Hume, Kant, and Foucault strike up conversations with Benjamin, Barthes, Althusser, Fanon, Anzaldúa, and Butler. Drawing on a wide array of artistic and theoretical sources and challenging disciplinary boundaries, the book illuminates address's significance to cultural existence and to our reflexive aesthetic engagement in it.
