In this first full-length study of Byron's masterpiece in over thirty years, Richard Cronin boldly presents Don Juan as the epic poem of its age. Impressively illuminating the whole literary nineteenth century through a single work, he asks what kind of epic can be said to represent an era more readily defined by newspapers and magazines than by competitors such as Wordsworth's Excursion or Southey's Joan of Arc arose. Delving into questions of form and choice of hero, he also explores the controversies that informed the poem's reception, its contemporary interactions, and its influence on later nineteenth-century literature. Don Juan, he argues, is the epic poem demanded by an age of cant and dissembling, when people's feelings and the world they lived in had become disconnected. In it, he finds a powerful defence of liberal thinking at a time when that kind of thinking was under threat.

Modernity’s Mist explores an understudied aspect of Romanticism: its future-oriented poetics. Whereas Romanticism is well known for its relation to the past, Emily Rohrbach situates Romantic epistemological uncertainties in relation to historiographical debates that opened up a radically unpredictable and fast- approaching future. As the rise of periodization made the project of defining the "spirit of the age" increasingly urgent, the changing sense of futurity rendered the historical dimensions of the present deeply elusive. While historicist critics often are interested in what Romantic writers and their readers would have known, Rohrbach draws attention to moments when these writers felt they could not know the historical dimensions of their own age. Illuminating the poetic strategies Keats, Austen, Byron, and Hazlitt used to convey that sense of mystery, Rohrbach describes a poetic grammar of future anteriority—of uncertainty concerning what will have been. Romantic writers, she shows, do not simply reflect the history of their time; their works make imaginable a new way of thinking the historical present when faced with the temporalities of modernity

In this volume, Ian Watt examines the myths of Faust, Don Quixote, Don Juan and Robinson Crusoe, as the distinctive products of modern society. He traces the way the original versions of Faust, Don Quixote and Don Juan - all written within a forty-year period during the Counter Reformation - presented unflattering portrayals of the three figures, while the Romantic period two centuries later recreated them as admirable and even heroic. The twentieth century retained their prestige as mythical figures, but with a new note of criticism. Robinson Crusoe came much later than the other three, but his fate can be seen as representative of the new religious, economic and social attitudes which succeeded the Counter-Reformation. The four figures help to reveal problems of individualism in the modern period: solitude, narcissism, and the claims of the self versus the claims of society. They all pursue their own view of what they should be, raising strong questions about their heroes' character and the societies whose ideals they reflect.

'Byron and the Forms of Thought' is a major new study of Byron as a poet and thinker. While informed by recent work on Byron's philosophical contexts it sharply diverges from previous methodological assumptions to break new ground. Rather than attempting to re-describe Byron as a philosopher of a particular sort, the book draws attention to the ways in which Byron's poetry understands and explores its own 'philosophical' agency 'Byron and the forms of thought' is a major new study of Byron as a poet and thinker. While informed by recent work on Byron's philosophical contexts, the book questions attempts to describe Byron as a philosopher of a particular kind. It approaches Byron, rather, as a writer fascinated by the different ways of thinking philosophy and poetry are taken to represent. After an Introduction that explores Byron's reception as a thinker, the book moves to a new reading of Byron's scepticism, arguing for a close proximity, in Byron's thought, between epistemology and poetics. This is explored through readings of Byron's efforts both as a philosophical poet and writer of critical prose. The conclusions reached form the basis of an extended reading of 'Don Juan' as a critical narrative that investigates connections between visionary and political consciousness. What emerges is a deeply thoughtful poet intrigued and exercised by the possibilities of literary form. -- Publisher's description

-- Publisher's description Part 1. Philosophy. Essay I . "Jane Stabler offers the first full-scale examination of Byron's poetic form in relation to the historical debates of his time. Responding to recent studies of publishing and audiences in the Romantic period, Stabler argues that Byron's poetics developed in response to contemporary cultural history and his reception by the English reading public. Drawing on extensive new archive research into Byron's correspondence and reading, Stabler traces the complexity of the intertextual dialogues that run through his work. For example, Stabler analyses Don Juan alongside Galignani's Messenger - Byron's principal source of news about British politics while in Italy - and refers to hitherto unpublished letters between Byron's publishers and his friends revealing a powerful impulse among his contemporaries to direct his controversial poetic style to their own political ends. This study will be of interest to Byronists and, more broadly, to scholars of Romanticism in general."--Jacket

They all pursue their own view of what they should be, raising strong questions about their heroes' character and the societies whose ideals they reflect

Opposites attract : an intellectual, Don Juan and nation in early twentieth-century Spain -- Performance anxieties : Don Juan in the consulting room -- Screen seductions : negotiating theatricality in Don Juan films -- Repetition compulsion : redoing the tenorio -- Empty promises : opera and the aesthetics of cultural consumption

Don Juan is one of the intriguing creations of Western literature. A legendary seducer of women, trickster and transgressor of sacred boundaries, he has been the object of countless revisions over the centuries. The twentieth-century has viewed the figure afresh through the prism of its own cultural terms of reference and social concerns. Using an interdisciplinary approach, 'Tales of Seduction' focuses on the intersections between myth, culture and intellectual inquiry. Sarah Wright takesDon Juan back to Spain, his birth-place, and examines the confluences of Spanish culture with aspects of Western intellectual history (medicine, psychoanalysis, linguistics), where she finds Don Juan continues to transgress the limits of culture from the early twentieth century to the present
