    El presente volumen se propone arrojar nueva luz sobre la relación de Miguel de Cervantes con los desarrollos del Humanismo en la Europa de su tiempo. Redactadas por especialistas de la obra cervantina, las contribuciones reunidas aquí dan claras pruebas de la presencia de la tradición humanista en Cervantes, mostrando que el poeta eruditus debía disponer de los conocimientos de la Antigüedad para tener éxito en su imitatio. Documentan, entre otros aspectos, cómo los planteamientos neoplatónicos quedan relativizados mediante una retórica de la persuasión; qué importancia tiene el pensamiento utópico para la propia realidad; cómo en último término los diálogos oscilan entre la argumentación objetiva y el estado afectivo, entre la voluntad de cooperación y el ansia de poder; qué papel juegan la retórica de la agudeza en la lírica cervantina y la retórica de la predicación en el Persiles y qué reflexión iconológica encontramos en Cervantes; y, por último, que el Don Quijote pudo leerse durante la Ilustración como un alegato en favor de la experiencia y utilidad, y más tarde como paradigma de la prioridad, representada por el idealismo alemán, de la idea frente a la realidad This edited volume explores the ways in which Miguel de Cervantes adopted humanist positions, whether he submitted these to critical examination or made them the target of his satires. It tries to determine how familiar Cervantes was with the contemporary developments of humanism in different European countries, and if references to particular humanist thinkers can be identified in his work. The contributions gathered in this volume, all from acknowledged Cervantes experts, tackle among others the following questions: How does Cervantes analyse the humanist connexion between science and virtue? Does Don Quixote’s conflictive reenaction of chivalric novels come from the humanist ideal of 'imitatio'? Do the many dialogues in Cervantes’ work originate in the rhetorical tradition? What is the role of Plato’s aesthetic of the καλὸς κἀγαθός in Cervantes? Does Cervantes portray doctors and jurists as typical members of an ascending bourgeois class?     Although best known the world over for his masterpiece novel, Don Quixote de la Mancha, published in two parts in 1605 and 1615, the antics of the would-be knight-errant and his simple squire only represent a fraction of the trials and tribulations, both in the literary world and in society at large, of Cervantes. Poet, playwright, soldier, slave, satirist, novelist, political commentator, and literary outsider, Cervantes achieved a minor miracle by becoming one of the rarest of things in the Early-Modern world of letters: an international best-seller during his lifetime, with his great novel being translated into multiple languages before his death in 1616. The Oxford Handbook of Cervantes is to create a resource in English that provides a fully comprehensive overview of the life, works, and influences of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616).

    The global nature of Cervantes Global´s work is evident in the worldwide distribution of its readers, in the variety of methodologies from which it is studied and in the depth of the texts, which are attractive in any cultural context. Cervantes Global illustrates the heterogeneous and dialectical nature of Cervantism with contributions from various countries: Germany, Argentina, Canada, South Korea, Spain, United States, France, Israel, Italy and Switzerland. The volume brings together different but complementary approaches and methodologies that allow establishing a dialogue between different notions and critical categories, as well as promoting a self-reflective and self-critical attitude within Cervantism. The volume contains works on the reception of Don Quixote, but also studies on its female figures, on the equestrian theme, on the canon of Cervantine kings, or on the ideal of the Christian knight. This text examines the character of Don Quixote, the book describing his fictional exploits, and their implications in the theological realm as well as in the fictive, using Gónzalez and Maldonado’s definition of theology as "la explicación de la realidad cósmica" ["the explanation of cosmic reality"], including the identity and nature of God. The first chapter examines the implications of the basin-helmet in El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de La Mancha, in context with the historical and theological developments of the end of the sixteenth century. The second chapter looks first at the religious climate of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries in Spain and the rest of Europe to tease-out the theological and ecclesiastical preoccupations that undergird much of the content in Don Quixote. The third chapter examines a few details from the life of Miguel de Cervantes in order to place him within the historical and literary context examined in the second chapter, and the fourth chapter examines chivalry as a mode of religious life. The fifth chapter then approaches various other characters, events, and discussions in the novel that carry religious content, and the sixth considers transformation, transubstantiation, and translation, using the topos of the baciyelmo as a metaphor for Cervantes

(Sybille Mohnhoff) Die literarische Figur Don Quichotte ist hierzulande bekannter als ihr Schöpfer, dabei zählt Cervantes neben Homer, Dante, Shakespeare und Goethe zu den 5 Großen der europäischen Literatur und gilt als der Erfinder des modernen Romans. Darüber hinaus war sein Leben abenteuerlich und geprägt von Schicksalsschlägen. Anlass für den Romanisten Neumahr den spanischen Autor ins rechte Licht zu rücken, zumal die Biografien von J. Canavaggio (ID-G 49/89) und C. Strosetzki (BA 8/92) in einigen Teilen überholt sind. Ihm ist es ausgezeichnet gelungen, Leben und Werk Cervantes' in seinen historischen und literarischen Kontext einzuordnen, ohne in Spekulationen zu verfallen, er weist im Gegenteil darauf hin, wenn etwas ungesichert ist. Der Band ist kein populärwissenschaftliches Werk, sondern eine seriöse, fachlich fundierte Lebensbeschreibung mit dem Anspruch umfassender Quellenauswertung und vollständiger Wiedergabe aller bekannten Fakten, dennoch auch für Laien gut verständlich, lebendig erzählt und fesselnd für Leser, die sich für Biografien interessieren.     "Studies that connect the Spanish 17th and 20th centuries usually do so through a conservative lens, assuming that the blunt imperialism of the early modern age, endlessly glorified by Franco's dictatorship, was a constant in the Spanish imaginary. This book, by contrast, recuperates the thriving, humanistic vision of the Golden Age celebrated by Spanish progressive thinkers, writers, and artists in the decades prior to 1939 and the Francoist Regime. The hybrid, modern stance of the country in the 1920s and early 1930s would uniquely incorporate the literary and political legacies of the Spanish Renaissance into the ambitious design of a forward, democratic future. In exploring the complex understanding of this multifaceted event (modernity), the life story and literary opus of Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) acquires a new significance, given the weight of the author in the poetic and political endeavors of those Spanish left-wing reformists who believed they could shape a new Spanish society. By recovering their progressive dream, buried for almost a century, of incipient and full Spanish modernities, Ana María Laguna establishes a more balanced understanding of both the modern and early modern periods, and casts doubt on the idea of a persistent conservatism in Golden Age literature and studies. This book ultimately serves as a vigorous defense of the canonical as well as the neglected critical traditions that promoted Cervantes's humanism in the 20th century."--...

Cervantes and his contemporaries ceaselessly imitated one another - glossing works, dismembering and reconstructing them, writing for and against one another, while playing sophisticated games of literary one-upmanship. The result, says Gerli, is that literature in late Renaissance Spain was often more than a simple matter of source and imitation. It must be understood as a far more subtle, palimpsest-like process of forging endless series of texts from other texts, thus linking closely the practices of reading, writing, and rewriting. Like all major writers of the age, Cervantes was responding not just to specific literary traditions but to a broad range of texts and discourses. And he expected his well-read audience to recognize his sources and to appreciate their transformations. Modern literary theory has explicitly confirmed what Cervantes and his contemporaries intuitively knew - that reading and writing are closely linked dimensions of the literary enterprise. Other texts constitute an important source for understanding not only how Cervantes' works were composed but how these works were read, received, and rewritten by him and other writers of his age. Reading Cervantes and his contemporaries in this way enables us to comprehend the craft, wit, irony, and subtle conceit that lie at the heart of seventeenth-century Spanish literature.
