    The American Critical Archives was a series of reference books that provide representative selection of contemporary reviews of the main works of major American authors. Specifically each volume contains both full reviews and excerpts from reviews that appeared in newspapers and weekly and monthly periodicals generally within a few months of the publication of the work concerned. There is an introductory historical overview by the volume editor, as well as checklists of additional reviews located but not quoted. This book represents the first comprehensive collection of contemporary reviews of the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Many of the reviews are reprinted from hard-to-locate contemporary newspapers and periodicals.

    Anhand der transatlantischen Rezeptionslinie Goethe, Emerson, Whitman, Thomas Mann rekonstruiert die Studie eine vernachlässigte Facette der Literaturgeschichte: das Programm einer kollektiven Poetik. Bestimmend für diesen Ansatz ist der Versuch, das moderne Leben in der ganzen, reichen Mannigfaltigkeit seiner intellektuellen und sozialen Erscheinungsformen abzubilden, ohne zugleich das Bestreben einer lockeren Einheitsbildung aufzugeben. Gestalt erhält dieses Unterfangen einerseits in Aspekten der poetischen Form (Teil-Ganzes-Beziehung, Stimmenvielfalt, ironische Erzählhaltung), andererseits in gesellschaftlichen Strukturen und Positionen (Liberalität, Demokratie, Individualität). Die Genese der Kollektivpoetik ist dabei wesentlich geknüpft an die Gründung der Vereinigten Staaten als einer ebenso außerordentlichen wie eigenständigen Kulturnation; der kollektivpoetische Text setzt das Leitbild der USA, ja der offenen Gesellschaften insgesamt literarisch ins Werk: E pluribus unum. Following a trajectory that begins with Goethe and extends through Emerson, Whitman, and Mann, this study reconstructs a neglected facet of modernity: the effort to create a “collective poetics.” The work examines both aspects of literary form and ways of thinking about society and politics. The collective poetics of “E pluribus unum” represents the literary manifestation of the guiding principle of the US and of liberal democracy in general.

Emerson's reputation has rested on the addresses and essays of the 1830s and 1840s, in which he propounded a version of transcendental idealism and memorably portrayed moments of mystical insight. But Emerson's later thinking suggests an increasing concern over the elusiveness of mysticism and an increasing emphasis on ethical choice and practical power. Robinson discusses each of Emerson's major later works noting their increasing orientation to a philosophy of the 'conduct of life'. These books represent Emerson's attempt to forge a philosophy based on the centrality of domestic life, vocation and social relations and they reveal Emerson as an ethical philosopher who stressed the spiritual value of human relations, work and social action.

    The first book devoted to Coleridge’s influence on Emerson and the development of American Transcendentalism. As Samantha Harvey demonstrates, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s thought galvanized Emerson at a pivotal moment in his intellectual development in the years 1826-1836, giving him new ways to harmonize the Romantic triad of nature, spirit and humanity. Emerson did not think about Coleridge: he thought with Coleridge, resulting in a unique case of assimilative influence. In addition to examining his specific literary, philosophical, and theological influences on Emerson, this book reveals Coleridge’s centrality for Boston Transcendentalism and Vermont Transcendentalism, a movement which profoundly affected the development of modern higher education, the national press, and the emergence of Pragmatism.

    This book explores the intertwined history of Emerson and individualism. Charles E. Mitchell begins by examining those who regarded Emersonian individualism with ambivalence or hostility, focusing on the comments of such diverse figures as Henry James, Sr., Oliver Wendell Holmes, Van Wyck Brooks, and H.L. Mencken. He then offers an alternative view as reflected in the work of William James, John Dewey, W.E.B. Du Bois, and William Carlos Williams.     This is Richard Brantley's most wide-ranging and his most personal book. It connects the epistemology of John Locke to evangelical Christianity, showing how the late ("but not belated") Romanticism of Emerson's prose and Tennyson's In Memoriam A.H.H. exemplifies the period's trust in experience as the best means of knowing what is true. Interpreting their work in light of the eighteenth-century thought of John Wesley (founder of British Methodism) and Jonathan Edwards (leader of the American Great Awakening), Brantley composes a complex harmony of ideas, much as the antiphonal voices in a divided chancel choir rejoice in agreeable, yet complicated, song. With a willingness to risk the widest ramifications of his ideas, Brantley explores the creative tension between empiricism and evangelicalism, reaffirming the hopefulness of Romantic literature and of the Romantic writers who used their poetry and prose to examine issues of personal urgency. He seeks specific answers to the question of ultimate meaning in human existence, boldly asserting that the optimism of Tennyson and Emerson "makes so much sense for their social world that it may even make sense for today's individual-in-society." His method is relatively unsystematic, for he invokes Keats's "Negative Capability," the ability to rest with "uncertainties, Mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason." While emphasizing this value amid multiple perspectives and cultures, Brantley, in this concluding volume of his historical-critical tetralogy, aspires to the condition of open mind and warm heart that he finds in Wesley, Edwards, Tennyson, and Emerson.
