Die literatursoziologische Studie zeichnet auf der Grundlage von Gesprächen und Archivalien die Entwicklung vom elitären "Wohnzimmerverein" der 50er zum repräsentativen Club der 80er Jahre. PEN wird in seinen Verwicklungen in die Zeitgeschichte, in seinem Selbstbild und seinen Selbsttäuschungen gezeigt

    Main description: What began in 1921 as an amicable dining club in London is today the only international writers' association in existence. The present volume is an institutional history of the West German PEN club from the division of the all-German centre in 1951 to the reunification of Germany in 1990. The study concentrates on literary sociology and draws on conversations and ample archive material to outline the development from an elitist 'drawing-room society' in the 1950s to the prestigious and representative club that had emerged from this by the 1980s. It portrays the PEN club in all its involvements with the historical events of the age, its achievements, its self-image, and its self-delusions, personified by the club's protagonists from Kdstner, Edschmid, Neumann, and Bvll to Jens, Gregor-Dellin, and Amery. The history of the Federal Republic is eloquently reflected in the history of this fellowship of writers and the responses of its leading intellectuals to the Cold War, the building of the Wall, the Spiegel affair, the year 1968, and German unification. But frequently the really intriguing insights afforded by a close history of the PEN club derive not so much from analysis of the zeitgeist or of major historical events but reside in the illuminating, sometimes micro-historical details

Die literatursoziologische Studie zeichnet auf der Grundlage von Gesprächen und mannigfaltigen Archivalien die Entwicklung vom elitären "Wohnzimmerverein" der 50er zum repräsentativen Club der 80er Jahre. PEN wird in seinen Verwicklungen in die Zeitgeschichte, in seinen Leistungen, seinem Selbstbild und seinen Selbsttäuschungen gezeigt, personifiziert anhand der Protagonisten des Clubs von Kästner, Edschmid und Neumann über Böll bis Jens, Gregor-Dellin und Amery. Anhand der Geschichte dieser Schriftstellervereinigung und ihren repräsentativen Intellektuellen läßt sich die Geschichte der Bundesrepublik nachvollziehen: der Kalte Krieg, Mauerbau und Spiegelaffäre, das Jahr 1968 und die deutsche Einheit. Der Reiz einer umfassenden PEN-Geschichte liegt jedoch häufig nicht in der Analyse von Zeitgeist- oder Großereignissen, sondern im sprechenden, manchmal geradezu mikrogeschichtlichen Detail.

    In Women Writers and National Identity, Stephanie Bird offers a detailed analysis of the twin themes of female identity and national identity in the works of three major twentieth-century German-language women writers. Bird argues for the importance of an understanding of ambiguity, tension and contradiction in the fictional narratives of Ingeborg Bachmann, Anne Duden and Emine Özdamar. She aims to demonstrate how ambiguity is itself central to the development of an understanding of identity and that literary texts are uniquely able to point to the ethical importance of ambiguity through their stylistic complexity. Bird gives close readings of the three writers and draws on feminist theory and psychoanalysis to elucidate the complex nature of individual identity. This book will be of interest to literary and women's studies scholars as well as Germanists.

    The cultural history of 20th-century Germany, more perhaps than that of any other European country, was decisively influenced by political forces and developments. This volume of essays focuses on the relationship between German politics and culture, which is most obvious in the case of the Third Reich and the German Democratic Republic, where the one-party control of all areas of life was extended to the arts; these were expected to conform to the ideals of the day. But the relationship between politics and the arts has not always been one purely of coercion, censorship, collusion, and opportunism. Many writers greeted the First World War with quite voluntary enthusiasm; others conjured up the National Socialist revolution in intense Expressionist images long before 1933. The GDR was heralded by writers returning from Nazi exile as the anti-fascist answer to the Third Reich. And in West Germany, politics did not dictate artistic norms, nor was it greeted with any great enthusiasm among intellectuals, but writers did tend to ally themselves with particular parties. To an extent, the pre-1990 literary establishment in the Federal Republic was dominated by a left-liberal consensus that German division was the just punishment for Auschwitz. United Germany began its existence with a fierce literary debate in 1990-92, with leading literary critics arguing that East and West German literature had basically shored up the political order in the two countries. Now a new literature was required, one that was free of ideology, intensely subjective and experimental in its aesthetic. In 1998, the author Martin Walser called for an end to the author's role as "conscience of the nation" and for the right to subjective experience. This is the first book to examine this crucial relationship between politics and culture in Germany. William Niven and James Jordan are readers in German at the University of Nottingham Trent

    In Women Writers and National Identity, Stephanie Bird offers a detailed analysis of the twin themes of female identity and national identity in the works of three major twentieth-century German-language women writers. Bird argues for the importance of an understanding of ambiguity, tension and contradiction in the fictional narratives of Ingeborg Bachmann, Anne Duden and Emine Özdamar. She aims to demonstrate how ambiguity is itself central to the development of an understanding of identity and that literary texts are uniquely able to point to the ethical importance of ambiguity through their stylistic complexity. Bird gives close readings of the three writers and draws on feminist theory and psychoanalysis to elucidate the complex nature of individual identity. This book will be of interest to literary and women's studies scholars as well as Germanists
