This collection of critical essays is designed to lay the foundations for a new theory of the European avant-garde. It starts from the assumption that not one all-embracing intention of all avant-garde movements - i.e. the intention of "reintegrating art into the practice of life" (Peter Bürger) - but the challenge of new cultural technologies, in particular photography and cinema, constitutes the main driving force of the formation and further development of the avant-garde. This approach permits to establish a theoretical framework that takes into account the diversity of artistic aims and directions of the various art movements and encourages a wide and open exploration of the multifaceted and often contradictory nature of the great variety of avant-gardist innovations. Following the theoretical foundation of the new approach, individual contributions concentrate on a diverse range of avant-gardist concepts, trends and manifestations from cubist painting and the literary work of Apollinaire and Gertrude Stein to the screeching voices of futurism, dadaist photomontage and film, surrealist photographs and sculptures and neo-avant-gardist theories as developed by the French group OuLiPo. The volume closes with new insights gained from placing the avant-garde in the contexts of literary institutions and psychoanalytical and sociological concepts. The main body of the volume is based on presentations and discussions of a three-day research seminar held at Yale University, New Haven, in February 2000. The research group formed on this occasion will continue with its efforts to elaborate a new theory of the avant-garde in the coming years

    In the Hobsbawmian long 19th century, gender and processes of sexualization and feminization have been crucial in the construction of the »Jewish Other«. Ulrike Brunotte explores how these processes came about by addressing imaginative, aesthetic, and epistemological questions. She analyzes how literature, psychoanalysis and the performing arts traverse and react to the ambivalence of racialized stereotypes. The »femininity puzzle« presents itself in two ways: first in the role of effeminization of the male Jew in antisemitic discourse, and then in the transgressive forms of femininity connected to Jewish women, especially the allosemitic Orientalization in the figure of the »Beautiful Jewess«

    Issu des travaux d’un séminaire de recherche organisé sous les auspices du Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique-FNRS belge, ce volume étudie les modalités de la mise en forme et de la mise en récit du témoignage. Se fondant sur un bilan historiographique inédit des recherches sur le sujet, présenté en début d’ouvrage, il construit et met à jour une large réflexion de nature épistémologique et théorique sur l’écriture du témoignage.Plusieurs chapitres élargissent la tradition des recherches sur la Shoah au témoignage de femmes (la féminité comme moyen de survie dans les camps, la difficile réintégration sociale des anciennes déportées). D’autres études de cas approfondissent le genre du journal intime en temps de guerre (ceux des historiens belges Paul Fredericq et Henri Pirenne en 1914-1918, le journal de Victor Klemperer) mais aussi l’idée de témoignage « indirect » de nature foncièrement fictionnelle et littéraire (la poésie de Gertrud Kolmar, la mise en fiction de la Résistance dans l’œuvre de Beppe Fenoglio, la première littérature de l’immigration en Italie). Les chapitres consacrés à James Baldwin et à David Van Reybrouck explorent les voies du témoignage dans le journalisme littéraire et le genre de la non-fiction, sa basant notamment sur la posture engagée de ces auteurs.

    Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bricht in der europäischen Literatur eine Wartezeit an, die quer steht zum Paradigma von Fortschritt, Beschleunigung und Produktivität. An die Stelle zielgerichteter Erwartungen tritt ein Verharren im Übergang, das neue dramatische und erzählerische Formen begründet. Andrea Erwig geht den Darstellungsformen, Eigenzeiten und Phantasmen des Wartens u. a. bei Maeterlinck, Rilke, Musil und Freud nach und widmet sich dabei auch Warteräumen und institutionellen Machttechniken. Das literarische Warten zeigt sich in ihrer Studie von einer subversiven Seite: Die ›Waiting Plots‹ der frühen Moderne stemmen sich gegen die Bestimmtheit von Erwartungen und unterbrechen das lineare Fortschreiten von Geschichte, um sich dem Unbestimmten und Singulären der Wirklichkeit zu verschreiben. Das Fin de siècle erscheint aus dieser Perspektive als Übergangszeit, die Endgültigkeiten nicht nur beschwört, sondern sich diesen zugleich widersetzt.

    Socialist Literature studies the relationship between the development of socialist literary theory and the process of cultural transformation in modern society by tracing the outline of the theory in the works of Marx, Lenin, and Mao, and examining its reflection in actual works of literature. This analysis is set alongside a detailed examination of the literary part of the cultural superstructure in China and in the Soviet Union. Among the major literary and theoretical works discussed are The communist Manifesto, Talks at the Yenan Forum on Literature and Art, Gorky’s Mother, and the poetry of Mayakovsky. Key issues, like the position of the writer in society, the relationship of the old and the new in literature, and the much discussed relationship between the «creator» and the «audience,» are examined and explained in a different light by regarding them as more than purely theoretical issues or abstract cultural problems and, instead, considering them as social issues that can only be settled at the level of practice. Abdulla Al-Dabbagh amplifies the area of research by discussing some of the major opposing positions to the theory outlined and, by examining at length the portrayal of proletarian heroism, one of its key concepts, in the literary works of the same epoch. The result of the close textual analysis of a large number of major works of poetry, drama, and fiction reveals the course of the artistic development to be complementary to that of the theoretical advance.
