    Dieser Überblick über die Literatur und Kunst von Moderne und Postmoderne führt in die Ästhetik dieser Epochen als Ästhetik des Fremden ein. Er erklärt damit, warum die moderne und postmoderne Literatur und Kunst für ein breites Publikum schwer zugänglich geworden ist. Indem sie einen ästhetischen Prozess in Gang zu setzen versucht, der mit einer befremdenden Wirkung beginnt, muss diese Literatur und Kunst zwangsläufig die Erwartung einer spontanen Zugänglichkeit enttäuschen, wie sie von der Ästhetik des Schönen oder Erhabenen in vormodernen Zeiten her gewohnt war. In allgemein verständlicher Sprache und mit zahlreichen Beispielen aus Kunst und Literatur illustriert, macht der Band mit den vielfältigen Strategien der Erzeugung von Fremdartigkeit in Moderne und Postmoderne bekannt Literaturverz.     Maurice Godé s’est fait tout d’abord connaître par sa thèse d’Etat portant sur les « théories utopiques dans les revues expressionnistes allemandes » (Prix Strasbourg 1987), qui lui a fait découvrir le phénomène de modernité littéraire qu’il n’a cessé d’interroger par la suite. Le présent volume, qu’amis, collègues et élèves lui offrent en hommage réunit des études qui explorent cette même thématique. Il présente diverses formes de la modernité dans la littérature du XXe siècle, mais aussi dans les arts, danse et peinture notamment, éclaire les liens entre la littérature et une société en constante mutation, étudie des idées et des faits historiques qui marquèrent le siècle. Il souligne par ailleurs la richesse et la complexité des relations franco-allemandes durant cette période mouvementée. Enfin, l’Europe centrale, la Bohème plus particulièrement, ne pouvait être absente d’un ouvrage offert à celui qui avait voulu qu’à Montpellier les Etudes Germaniques s’élargissent en Etudes Centre-Européennes.

    David Ellison's book is an investigation into the historical origins and textual practice of European literary Modernism. Ellison's study traces the origins of Modernism to the emergence of early German Romanticism from the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, and emphasizes how the passage from Romanticism to Modernism can be followed in the gradual transition from the sublime to the uncanny. Arguing that what we call High Modernism cannot be reduced to a religion of beauty, an experimentation with narrative form, or even a reflection on time and consciousness, Ellison demonstrates that Modernist textuality is characterized by the intersection, overlapping, and crossing of aesthetic and ethical issues. Beauty and morality relate to each other as antagonists struggling for dominance within the related fields of philosophy and theory on the one hand (Kant, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Freud) and imaginative literature on the other (Baudelaire, Proust, Gide, Conrad, Woolf, Kafka).

    This ambitious study, first published in 1999, argues that our conception of the aesthetic sphere emerged during the era of British and German Romanticism from conflicts between competing models of the liberal state and the cultural nation. The aesthetic sphere is thus centrally connected to 'aesthetic statism', which is the theoretical project of reconciling conflicts in the political sphere by appealing to the unity of the symbol. David Kaiser traces the trajectory of aesthetic statism from Schiller and Coleridge, through Arnold, Mill and Ruskin, to Adorno and Habermas. He analyses how the concept of aesthetic autonomy shifts from being a supplement to the political sphere to an end in itself; this shift lies behind the problems that contemporary literary theory has faced in its attempts to connect the aesthetic and political spheres. Finally, he suggests that we rethink the aesthetic sphere in order to regain that connection.

    This ambitious study, first published in 1999, argues that our conception of the aesthetic sphere emerged during the era of British and German Romanticism from conflicts between competing models of the liberal state and the cultural nation. The aesthetic sphere is thus centrally connected to 'aesthetic statism', which is the theoretical project of reconciling conflicts in the political sphere by appealing to the unity of the symbol. David Kaiser traces the trajectory of aesthetic statism from Schiller and Coleridge, through Arnold, Mill and Ruskin, to Adorno and Habermas. He analyses how the concept of aesthetic autonomy shifts from being a supplement to the political sphere to an end in itself; this shift lies behind the problems that contemporary literary theory has faced in its attempts to connect the aesthetic and political spheres. Finally, he suggests that we rethink the aesthetic sphere in order to regain that connection

    Maurice Godé s'est fait tout d'abord connaître par sa thèse d'Etat portant sur les « théories utopiques dans les revues expressionnistes allemandes » (Prix Strasbourg 1987), qui lui a fait découvrir le phénomène de modernité littéraire qu'il n'a cessé d'interroger par la suite. Le présent volume, qu'amis, collègues et élèves lui offrent en hommage réunit des études qui explorent cette même thématique. Il présente diverses formes de la modernité dans la littérature du XXe siècle, mais aussi dans les arts, danse et peinture notamment, éclaire les liens entre la littérature et une société en constante mutation, étudie des idées et des faits historiques qui marquèrent le siècle. Il souligne par ailleurs la richesse et la complexité des relations franco-allemandes durant cette période mouvementée. Enfin, l'Europe centrale, la Bohème plus particulièrement, ne pouvait être absente d'un ouvrage offert à celui qui avait voulu qu'à Montpellier les Etudes Germaniques s'élargissent en Etudes Centre-Européennes
