While Plato recommended expelling poets from the ideal society, W. H. Auden famously declared that poetry makes nothing happen. The 19 contributions to the present book avoid such polarized views and, responding in different ways to the “ethical turn” in narrative theory, explore the varied ways in which narratives encourage readers to ponder matters of right and wrong. All work from the premise that the analysis of narrative ethics needs to be linked to a sensitivity to esthetic (narrative) form. The ethical issues are accordingly located on different levels. Some are clearly presented as thematic concerns within the text(s) considered, while others emerge through (or are generated by) the presentation of character and event by means of particular narrative techniques. The objects of analysis include such well-known or canonical texts as Biblical Old Testament stories, Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn , J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings , Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita , Jonathan Littell’s The Kindly Ones , Ann Radcliffe’s The Italian and Matthew Lewis’s The Monk . Others concentrate on less-well-known texts written in languages other than English. There are also contributions that investigate theoretical issues in relation to a range of different examples

    Eine Theorie der Prosa existiert nicht, wird hier jedoch erstmals in Angriff genommen, indem die Theoriegeschichte der Ästhetik von Baumgarten bis Hegel analysiert wird, um eine ›Idee der Prosa‹ zu gewinnen. Es gibt in der fortgeschrittenen Prosa (z.B. Jean Paul, Arno Schmidt) eine ästhetische Verdichtung, die nicht aus Form resultiert. Prosa wird, Benjamin und Agamben folgend, als Reflexionsmedium und Erfüllungsgegenstand von Form verstanden. Entsprechend liegt bei Baumgarten, Herder, Moritz, Kant, Schiller und Jean Paul vor der Form eine rhetorisch gedachte Aisthesis, die in der Form gebündelt werden soll, diese aber zugleich übersteigt. In der Frühromantik und bei Hegel dient eine ›prosaische‹ Theorie des Selbstbewusstseins als Matrix für einen analogen Prozess. Das vorliegende Buch versteht sich als Propädeutik für eine zukünftige Theorie der Prosa, wobei Jean Pauls »Vorschule der Ästhetik« als der Text gelesen wird, der sich auf dem Weg von der Idee der Prosa zu ihrer Theorie befindet.

For decades, it has been one of the most successful catchwords in literature, history, cultural studies, philosophy, and health studies. While the expansion of narrative studies has led to significant advances across a number of fields, the travels for the concept itself have been a somewhat more complex. Has the concept of narrative passed intact from literature to sociology, from structuralism to therapeutic practice or to the study of everyday storytelling? In this volume, philosophers, psychologists, literary theorists, sociolinguists, and sociologists use methodologically challenging test cases to scrutinize the types, transformations, and trajectories of the concept and theory of narrative. The book powerfully argues that narrative concepts are profoundly relevant in the understanding of life, experience, and literary texts.     This paper addresses identity construction in confessional poetry and explores three poems by Anne Sexton in closer detail. It shows that identity in lyrical texts can be discussed more poignantly by using the concept of narrative identity. A close reading of the three poems reveals three different self-concepts, the possibility of multiple selves, and the notion of permanent self-actualization through narrative. Furthermore, this paper suggests that narrative identity theory concentrates too much on conventional narratological frames such as narrative coherence. The reading of lyric poetry extends the narratological settings especially with respect to time. Therefore, this paper suggests that analyzing narrative identity in literary texts contributes to our general understanding of narrative identity. In addition, it draws attention to the connection between identity and emotion. It shows that lyric poetry evokes emotions not only through narrative, but also with the help of non-narrative devices. As a result, the paper demonstrates that emotions influence the identity-process and challenge a purely rational understanding of narrative identity.

    This chapter addresses how concepts of narrative and narration have been used in theories of cultural trauma. My point of departure is an article by Wulf Kansteiner and Harald Weilnböck, where they criticize the concept of cultural trauma or what they call the paradigm of "deconstructive trauma discourse." They argue that this paradigm not only misuses the concept of psychological trauma by adapting it to a cultural realm, but also refuses to recognize the significance of narratives in trauma therapy. I will challenge their criticism by taking a closer look at how the concept of cultural trauma has been defined and used in cultural studies. I will also argue that the theories of cultural trauma recognize the significance of narration as a process, although they criticize certain types of narratives or closed narrative form. Within this discussion I intend to shed light on how the concept of narrative has travelled and is used in the discussions focusing on cultural trauma.

    Geschichten zu hören und zu erzählen ist ein Urbedürfnis der Menschen, nicht weit hinter Trinken, Essen und Schlafen. Warum das so ist, hat die Anthropologen bislang wenig interessiert. Doch nicht nur das Erzählen, als das wohl elementarste Format der Verarbeitung von Wahrnehmungen, Bedürfnissen und Erfahrungen, ist universal. Quer durch alle Kulturen findet sich eine Fülle übereinstimmender Motive, Plots und Genres. Warum ist das so? Der Erfolg einer Geschichte bemaß sich vor Erfindung der Schrift schlicht danach, ob sie weitererzählt wurde. Weitererzählt wurde, was den größten Anklang bei den Zuhörern fand; Ähnliches geschieht jetzt wieder in den massenmedial vermittelten Narrationen der modernen Populärkultur. Zu suchen ist also nach relevanten Dispositionen, die allen Menschen gemeinsam sind. Dazu werden zunächst mit den Mitteln der Literaturwissenschaft die universal beobachteten Elemente genauer beschrieben und auf ihre Zusammenhänge hin untersucht. Dies führt zur Identifizierung von fünf universalen "Strömen des Erzählens". Diese werden im Dialog mit anthropologisch einschlägigen Disziplinen wie Biologie und Psychologie auf universale menschliche Dispositionen bezogen.
