    The book develops a Theory of the Figurative Lexicon. Units of the figurative lexicon (conventional figurative units, CFUs for short) differ from all other elements of the language in two points: Firstly, they are conventionalized. That is, they are elements of the mental lexicon - in contrast to freely created figurative expressions. Secondly, they consist of two conceptual levels: they can be interpreted at the level of their literal reading and at the level of their figurative meaning - which both can be activated simultaneously.New insights into the Theory of Figurative Lexicon relate, on the one hand, to the metaphor theory. Over time, it became increasingly clear that the Conceptual Metaphor Theory in the sense of Lakoff can only partly explain the conventional figurativeness. On the other hand, it became clear that "intertextuality" plays a far greater role in the CFUs of Western cultures than previously assumed.The book's main target audience will be linguists, researchers in phraseology, paremiology and metaphor, and cultural studies. The data and explanations of the idioms will provide a welcome textbook in courses on linguistics, culture history, phraseology research and phraseodidactics

    Die Publikation hat das Ziel, Analogierelationen als heuristische Zauberstäbe bzw. als semiotische Universalien anzusehen, über die sich Unbekanntes mit Hilfe von Bekanntem heuristisch erschließen lässt. Das bedeutet, dass Analogien zugleich analysierende, synthetisierende und spielerische Grundfunktionen zukommen, die uns sehr vielfältige Resonanzräume eröffnen können. Es beinhaltet weiter, dass Analogieannahmen auch dazu dienlich sind, die Welt der Objekte in einen fruchtbaren Interaktionszusammenhang zu der Welt der Subjekte zu bringen. Dadurch lässt sich dann auch die These Cassirers sehr gut exemplifizieren, das der Mensch ein genuines Zeichenwesen (animal symbolicum) ist, das sich seine Lebenswelt mit Hilfe kultureller Zeichen erschließen kann und muss. Deshalb richtet sich das Erkenntnisinteresse hier dann auch nicht nur auf die allgemeinen kulturgeschichtlichen, philosophischen und semiotischen Aspekte des Analogiephänomens, sondern insbesondere auch auf die Analogieimplikationen unserer lexikalischen, grammatischen, metaphorischen, funktionalen und textuellen Sinnbildungsmuster, um die Welt der Objekte mit der Welt der Subjekte in einen fruchtbaren Interaktionszusammenhang miteinander zu bringen

    This paper reexamines the notion of diagrammatic iconicity in grammar, i.e. the isomorphism of relational structure across form and meaning. After a quick survey of the various definitions of diagrammatic iconicity, some illustrations are given from coordinating constructions. It is shown that grammatical (a)symmetry in the expression of complex events corresponds to conceptual (a)symmetry. Next, diagrammatic iconicity is examined from an evolutionary viewpoint.     This dictionary supplies associations which have been evoked by plants, animals, gems, objects and concepts throughout the history of Western civilization, from the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt to the poetry of Dylan Thomas. It supplies background information from fields which may not be everyone's speciality, such as biology and mythology. It gives not one, but several meanings which may apply simultaneously, since indefiniteness is the mark of symbols. No fine distinction is made between symbols, allegories, metaphors, signs, types or images, since such subtle distinctions, however sensible from a scientific point of view, are useless to a person struggling with the deeper comprehension, and thus appreciation, of a particular 'symbol'. Important general entries are listed such as archetypes, ass, binary, bull, calendar, eagle, elements, Great Goddess, Sacred King, sun, etc., which it is advisable to read first. Information was gathered from primary sources: both famous and obscure classical authors; the Bible; the medieval scholar and musician Hildegard von Bingen; but also Donne, Shakespeare and Eliot. Lists of primary and secondary literature are included. From the many notes left behind by the late Ad de Vries, his son has gathered enough new material to enlarge the original 1974 edition more than 20 per cent. Included are many new entries taken from herbals and lapidaries as well as ancient books on medicine, architecture and dreams. This dictionary is an invaluable source of reference for students of many disciplines, as well as for writers and artists.

Diese verbreitete, meist mit Platon einsetzende philosophiehistorische Erzählung blendet jedoch aus, dass der Bildbegriff in Antike und Mittelalter auf produktive Weise zum Gegenstand und Instrument philosophischer Reflexionen wurde. Aktuelle bildtheorethische Ansätze können von der Rückbesinnung auf die-se komplexen historischen Konstellationen erheblich profitieren. Denken mit dem Bild versucht daher einen Brückenschlag zwischen der Philosophiegeschichte und der Bildfrage. Das Augenmerk gilt dabei Philosophen, die dem Begriff des Bildes eine zentrale Stellung eingeräumt haben: Platon, Plotin, Augustinus, Eckhart, Cusanus, Kant, Fichte und Hegel.     Iconicity: East Meets West presents an intersection of East-West scholarship on Iconicity. Several of its chapters thus deal with Asian languages and cultures, or a comparison of world languages. Divided into four categories: general issues; sound symbolism and mimetics; iconicity in literary texts; and iconic motivation in grammar, the chapters show the diversity and dynamics of iconicity research, ranging from iconicity as a driving force in language structure and change, to the various uses of images, diagrams and metaphors at all levels of the literary text, in both narrative and poetic forms, as well as on all varieties of discourse, including the visual and the oral.

Key topics explored include metaphor, metonymy and their relationship to each other, as well as the less studied figure of hyperbole and its relation to the fundamental figures of metaphor and metonymy. Collectively, the papers examine the pragmatic reasoning processes triggered by figurative thought, the lexicogrammatical motivations and/or constraints on figurative language, the impact of deeply entrenched figurative thought on the lexicon of natural languages, the cultural origins of figurative thought, and the psycholinguistic motivations for figuration.     The monograph argues for a return to a more fine-grained repertoire of tropes than the limiting analyses focused on metaphor or on the metaphor-metonymy duet. A list of ten master tropes is proposed, not only as candidates for tropological universals but also important text-forming strategies and a reflection of artistic imagination. The author presents a three-layered model of their organization into micro-, macro- and mega-/metatropes that partake in the construal of tropological space and figurative worlds. The book brings together Anglo-American and French-language philosophy of rhetoric, cognitive studies, and a tradition of Russian formalistic-semiotic research. It straddles the boundary between linguistic and literary stylistics as well as between post-structural and cognitive poetics, pointing also to an interdisciplinary nature of tropes.
