This volume approaches literary representations of post and neocolonialism by combining their readings with respective theoretical configurations. The aim is to cast light upon common characteristics of contemporary texts from around the world that deal with processes of colonization. Based on the epistemic discourses of postimperialism/postcolonialism, globalization, and world literature, the volume’s chapters bring together international scholars from various disciplines in the Humanities, including Comparative Cultural Studies, Slavic, Romance, German, and African Studies. The main concern of the contributions is to conceptualize an autonomous category of a world literature of the colonial, going well beyond established classifications according to single languages or center-periphery dichotomies. Target Groups Lecturers and students of English, Slavic and German Philologies as well as Comparative Literature Specialists in Comparative and Cultural Studies, Postcolonial Studies and World Literature Studies Contents Literary History of the Colonial World Literature and Postcolonialism African Literatures and Afropolitanism Literary Traffic Transculturality The Editor Elke Sturm-Trigonakis is Professor of Comparative Literature at the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki/Greece and author of monographs and volumes concerning the concept of new Weltliteratur. Her research interests include (multilingual) world literature, postcolonialism, the picaresque novel, urban and crime fiction, and knowledge systems in the Humanities.

A top-flight and with justification noticed series of lectures on the subject of the bible´s effect had been held at the Göttinger Jacobikirche in 2003. It is an example for the tipical living-together of university and city and for a productive dialogue between sciences and church, which is even outside academic theology possible and needed.

This book proposes that there is no better, no more complex way to access a community, a society, an era and its cultures than through literature. For millennia, literature from a wide variety of geocultural areas has gathered knowledge about life, about survival, and about living together, without either falling into discursive or disciplinary specializations or functioning as a regulatory mechanism for cultural knowledge

"This volume, the first in the new series Transcultural Medieval Studies, draws together scholars from around the world to offer new insights into the importance and role of the Bible across the varied cultures of medieval Europe. The papers gathered here take a comparative and multidisciplinary approach to the subject, focusing on the biblical background of perceptions of the religious and cultural ‘Self ’ and ‘Other’ in the Mediterranean, in Latin Europe, and in the Baltic. In doing so, the contributions identify commonalities and differences of the ‘uses of the Bible’ in these various worlds, combining and contrasting studies on Bible manuscripts, their exegesis, and their use for historical writing."-- Scientific Challenges in a Changing World: Transcultural Medieval Studies in the Twenty-First Century — MATTHIAS M. "The study of world literature has developed at a rapid pace since the turn of the millennium. Just since this book first appeared in 2009, many new courses and several entire programs in world literature have been established, while a growing number of sophisticated studies have contributed to the expansion of world literature as a field of scholarship. These developments have also given rise to renewed debates concerning the politics of world literary study amid the ongoing stresses of globalization, including crises of migration, economic inequality, and tensions between local or national belonging and regional or religious identification. In such difficult times, it is more imperative than ever to find productive ways to read across cultures, gaining a better purchase for critical engagement both with the wider world beyond our shores and with our own home culture - or cultures. It has been a pleasure to be able to return to this book now, and I took this opportunity to expand a very succinct account into a more capacious but still accessible introduction to the key issues involved in the study of world literature today, as illustrated through a range of remarkable works from across the centuries and around the world. In preparing this new edition, which is half again the size of the first, I've brought in a range of new writers and have expanded the treatment of others. In particular, I've opened out what had been a single chapter on travel and empire into two full-length chapters"--
