    Dieser Band versucht die Entfaltung einer Theorie und Praxis der Literaturen der Welt ausgehend von Erich Auerbachs Auseinandersetzung mit dem von Goethe geprägten Weltliteratur-Konzept. Allein bewegungsgeschichtlich an Mobilität ausgerichtete Kultur- und Literaturtheorien sind heute wohl in der Lage, der verwirrenden Vielfalt hochdynamischer Veränderungen in der Welt durch die Betrachtung transarealer Bahnungen im Feld der Literatur gerecht zu werden. Es handelt sich dabei um das Erfassen von literarischen Austausch- und Transformationsprozessen zwischen Mittelmeer, Atlantik und Pazifik, die das Zusammenspiel verschiedener Erzählmöglichkeiten von Raum und Zeit aus einer gleichsam fraktalen und vielperspektivischen Sichtweise erfassen.     This book proposes an extension of Cognitive Grammar (Langacker 1987, 1991, 2008) towards a cognitive discourse grammar, through the unique environment that literary stylistic application offers. Drawing upon contemporary research in cognitive stylistics (Text World Theory, deixis and mind-modelling, amongst others), the volume scales up central Cognitive Grammar concepts (such as construal, grounding, the reference point model and action chains) in order to explore the attenuation of experience – and how it is simulated – in literary reading. In particular, it considers a range of contemporary texts by Neil Gaiman, Jennifer Egan, Jonathan Safran Foer, Ian McEwan and Paul Auster. This application builds upon previous work that adopts Cognitive Grammar for literary analysis and provides the first extended account of Cognitive Grammar in contemporary fiction.

    The study of literature has expanded to include an evolutionary perspective. Its premise is that the literary text and literature as an overarching institution came into existence as a product of the same evolutionary process that gave rise to the human species. In this view, literature is an evolutionary adaptation that functions as any other adaptation does, as a means of enhancing survivability and also promoting benefits for the individual and society. Text in the Natural World is an introduction to the theory and a survey of topics pertinent to the evolutionary view of literature. After a polemical, prefatory chapter and an overview of the pertinent aspects of evolutionary theory itself, the book examines integral building blocks of literature and literary expression as effects of evolutionary development. This includes chapters on moral sense, symbolic thought, literary aesthetics in general, literary ontology, the broad topic of form, function and device in literature, a last theoretical chapter on narrative, and a chapter on literary themes. The concluding chapter builds on the preceding one as an illustration of evolutionary thematic study in practice, in a study of the fauna in the fiction of Maupassant. This text is designed to be of interest to those who read and think about things literary, as well as to those who have interest in the extension of Darwin’s great idea across the horizon of human culture. It tries to bridge the gulf that has separated the humanities from the sciences, and would be a helpful text for courses taught in both literary theory and interdisciplinary approaches to literature and philosophy.

    Sind Interpretationen literarischer Texte relativ? Ist es am Ende beliebig, wie wir Literatur verstehen? Die Auffassung, dass Interpretationen nicht objektiv richtig oder falsch sein können, sondern allenfalls relative Geltung besitzen, ist in allen philologischen Fächern weit verbreitet. Das Buch fragt danach, wie überzeugend diese Auffassung ist. Es stellt die zentralen Argumente vor, mit denen der Relativismus in unterschiedlichen Theorietraditionen gerechtfertigt wurde, und diskutiert kritisch deren Überzeugungskraft. Damit liegt erstmals eine systematische Untersuchung der unterschiedlichen Formen vor, in denen der Interpretationsrelativismus in der Literaturwissenschaft auftritt, sowie der Gründe, die für ihn angeführt wurden.
