    Recent decades have witnessed an explosion in neuroscientific and related research treating aesthetic response. This book integrates this research with insights from philosophical aesthetics to propose new answers to longstanding questions about beauty and sublimity. Hogan begins by distinguishing what we respond to as beautiful from what we count socially as beautiful. He goes on to examine the former in terms of information processing (specifically, prototype approximation and non-habitual pattern recognition) and emotional involvement (especially of the endogenous reward and attachment systems). In the course of the book, Hogan examines such issues as how universal principles of aesthetic response may be reconciled with individual idiosyncrasy, how it is possible to argue rationally over aesthetic response, and what role personal beauty and sublimity might play in the definition of art. To treat these issues, the book considers works by Woolf, Wharton, Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, Beethoven, Matisse, and Kiran Rao, among others

    Poetic Effects: A Relevance Theory Perspective offers a pragmatic account of the effects achieved by the poetic use of rhetorical tropes and schemes. It contributes to the pragmatics of poetic style by developing work on stylistic effects in relevance theory. It also contributes to literary studies by proposing a new theoretical account of literariness in terms of mental representations and mental processes.The book attempts to define literariness in terms of text-internal linguistic properties, cultural codes or special purpose reading strategies, as well as suggestions that the notion of literariness should be dissolved or rejected. It challenges the accounts of language and verbal communication that underpin such positions and outlines the theory of verbal communication developed within relevance theory that supports an explanatory account of poetic effects and a new account of literariness. This is followed by a broader discussion of philosophical and psychological issues having a bearing on the question of what is expressed non-propositionally in literary communication. The discussion of emotion, qualitative experience and, more specifically, aesthetic experience provides a fuller characterisation of poetic effects and ‘poetic thought’.

Der tschechische Literaturwissenschaftler Milan Jankovič entwickelte sein Modell vom Kunstwerk als Quelle eines offenen, dynamischen Sinnbildungsprozesses in Auseinandersetzung mit der Ästhetik vor allem des Prager Strukturalismus. Erstmals erscheinen hier seine Studien in einem größeren Zusammenhang auf Deutsch. Der Band enthält neben der grundlegenden Monographie zum Werk als Sinngeschehen, die nach der Niederschlagung des Prager Frühlings nicht mehr erscheinen konnte, Auszüge aus neueren Arbeiten, in denen Jankovič sein Konzept auch im Lichte neuerer Theorieanstöße weiter ausarbeitete

    Narrative plays a central role for individual and collective lives - this insight has arguably only grown at a time of multiple social and cultural challenges in the 21st century. The present volume aims to actualize and further substantiate the case for literature and narrative, taking inspiration from Vera Nünning's eminent scholarship over the past decades. Engaging with her formative interdisciplinary work, the volume seeks to explore potentials of change through the transformative power of literature and narrative - to be harnessed by individuals and groups as agents of positive change in today's world. The book is located at the intersection of cognitive and cultural narratology and is concerned with the way literature affects individuals, how it works at an intersubjective level, enabling communication and community, and how it furthers social and cultural change.

    Vorgestellt werden zwei unkonventionelle Beispiele neuerer Literatur, bei denen die Gestalt des Buchs, seine Materialität und Architektur, als konstitutive Dimensionen des literarischen Werks selbst zu gelten haben: Anne Carsons Leporello-Buch "Nox" und Judith Schalanskys "Verzeichnis einiger Verluste". Carsons wie auch Schalanskys Buch entstanden als Dokumente des Erinnerns und nehmen Bezug auf Abwesendes bzw. Abwesende: Carson gestaltete "Nox" als Memorialbuch für ihren verstorbenen Bruder; es enthält Fetzen persönlicher Erinnerungsstücke sowie fragmentarische Notizen. Schalanskys "Verzeichnis einiger Verluste" bietet eine Zusammenstellung von Essays, Sachinformationen und Photos, die sich auf zwölf verschwundene Objekte, Orte, Kunstwerke oder natürliche Wesen beziehen.

    Der Begriff der Fiktionalität spielt i.A. eine zentrale Rolle bei der Unterscheidung zwischen literarischen und nicht - literarischen Texten. In der vorliegenden Untersuchung wird strikt zwischen literarischen Texten und literarischer Kommunikation unterschieden. Literarische oder ästhetische Kommunikation wird verwendet, um das auszudrücken, was nichtliterarisch unausdrückbar ist. Zentral in dieser sprachwissenschaftlichen Arbeit ist somit der Begriff des Ästhetischen, und zwar in Verbindung mit dem Begriff der Sinneswahrnehmung
