    Given the substantial impact of feminism on children's literature and culture during the last quarter century, it comes as no surprise that gender studies have focused predominantly on issues of female representation. The question of how the same patriarchal ideology structured representations of male bodies and behaviors was until very recently a marginal discussion. Now that masculinity has emerges as an overt theme in children's literature and film, critical consideration of the subject is timely, if not long overdueWays of Being Male addresses this new concern in an unprecedented collection of essays examining how contemporary debates about masculinity are reflected in fiction and film for young adults. An outstanding team of scholars elucidates the ways in which different versions of male identity are constructed and presented to young audiences. The contributors, drawn from a variety of academic disciplines, employ international discourses in literary criticism, feminism, social sciences, film theory, psychoanalytic criticism, and queer theory in their wide-ranging exploration of male representation.     Obwohl der riskante Charakter von Bildungs- und Erziehungsprozessen seit langem bekannt ist, neigt die Pädagogik dazu, das Scheitern pädagogischer Bemühungen theoretisch auszublenden. Dagegen gehört das Scheitern spätestens seit der Moderne zu den großen Themen der Literatur. Die Beiträge des Bandes nehmen das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen dem notorischen Optimismus der Pädagogik und dem Interesse literarischer Texte am Scheitern genauer in den Blick und gehen anhand ausgewählter Beispiele der Frage nach, welche Einsichten aus der literarischen Thematisierung des Scheiterns für erziehungswissenschaftliche Reflexionen zu gewinnen sind. Although the touch-and-go character of educational processes has been known for some time, the pedagogy is inclined to dismiss the failure of pedagogical efforts as theoretical. Yet failure has been a strong theme in the literature since the modern era at latest. The contributions to this volume take into account the tension between the pedagogy's notorious optimism and literary texts' interest in failure and review selected examples of the question of which insights from the literary thematization of the failure of educational science reflections are to win.
