First staged by the RSC at the Donmar Warehouse in 1981, 'Good' was probably Taylor's most successful play. It portrays the liberal German professor Halder who becomes involved with the Third Reich war machine and Auschwitz through moral cowardice and subtle corruption. Halder, however, continues to see himself as a 'good man' even as he is drawn further and further into Hitler's nightmare.

Stacey Goods returns to the black south, where he tends to his family's general merchandise store that his father has recently abandoned. Rather than the store's sole employee, Truth, assuming the store's proprietorship, Stacey seizes the reins, setting up a battle between the two men. The play also follows the homecoming of Patricia, who is Stacey's partner in their touring cabaret act and grew up in the same town as him, with her new companion, a runaway bride named Sunny.

Unhappy wife Marta needs to take a drastic step if she wants to escape her jealous husband. To that end, she and her lover recruit the help of a seedy magician, who chooses Marta as his volunteer for the 'disappearing person' trick in his act. When her jealous husband realizes that Marta is not reappearing, he demands that the magician return her. In 'Grand Magic', Eduardo de Filippo explores questions of faith, obsession, and delusion. This translation was first performed in England at the National Theatre, London, in 1995.

In spite of Eddy's humble beginnings, he manages to find happiness by solving the Sphinx's riddle and ending the plague of poverty that surrounds him. He gains wealth and loves his beautiful wife - but will the gypsy's prophecy come true? Does a fate worse than death await him? Steven Berkoff's exciting retelling of the ancient Greek tragedy 'Oedipus Rex' puts the hero in contemporary England, and explores the story from a whole new angle, emphasising the positive and redemptive power of love. 'Greek' premiered at the Half Moon Theatre, London, in February 1980.

First produced at the Croydon Warehouse Theatre in 1983, 'Groping for Words' is a warm comedy about an adult literacy evening class run by a middle-aged and well-meaning woman who knows that tact and respect are required. Unfortunately the only free room is the crèche. For her students, even admitting which class they want to attend is agonising, let alone being confronted with the written word. Townsend records their embarrassment and life-long difficulty with sensitivity and humour, as well as inflecting the play with an indignant condemnation of the society which has abandoned the illiterate.

First performed at Liverpool's Everyman Theatre in 1998, 'Guiding Star' is a funny and powerfully authentic portrait of a Liverpudlian family. At its centre is Terry and his unapproachable silence; he and his sons were Laurence and Liam were at the Hillsborough disaster. All three survived, but 9 years later he is still struggling to cope with what he saw. His wife can't bear how remote he has become, and their marriage is suffering. Next door, Marni and her husband have a son in hospital with cystic fibrosis. For some, life goes on: the quiet tragedy is lifted by the comic sparring between Laurence and his Ricki Lake-loving girlfriend. Terry's younger son Liam is also looking for a relationship, though his dad might not be pleased about where he's looking.

An early Brenton play, written in 1969 for the Brighton Combination, 'Gum and Goo' was the central part of a triple bill (with 'Heads' and 'The Education of Skinny Spew') It features two boys transformed into fantasy gremlins by an autistic girl. The girl is pushed into a hole and is found 'not dead - worse, she's silent'. Written to be performed with no set, the play requires bold physicalisation as there is nothing but the actors' bodies to tell the audience who the characters are.

First performed at the Lyric Hammersmith Studio in London in 1998, 'Handbag' is an angry, satirical, penetrating play about parenthood, which collides a reimagining of events from Wilde's 'The Importance of Being Earnest' with the life of a newborn baby in the nineties, the child of a lesbian couple and a gay couple, whose familial fantasy about the advantages for a child of having four rather than two parents is shattered by fear and infidelity.

A sparkling, hilarious and technically brilliant short comedy, 'Hands Across the Sea' is set at a cocktail party in a smart London flat where the telephone is always ringing and there are always three conversations happening at once. The earnest enquiries, enthusiastic reminiscences and society anecdotes scream along at dazzling pace, impeded not a jot by the hosts having no idea who exactly their guests are. 'Hands Across the Sea' is a short play from the 'Tonight at 8.30' sequence, which was first produced at the Phoenix Theatre in London in 1936.

Does light come in waves or particles? Experiment will show either: the experimenter can choose. 'A double agent is like a trick of the light,' Kerner the physicist tells Blair the spycatcher. 'You get what you interrogate for.' Dual natures, of light and of people, are the theme of Tom Stoppard's espionage thriller. Kerner's secret research is being leaked to Moscow. Is Ridley the double? Or is Kerner a triple? Hapgood is the person to find out, and maybe it will need two of her. 'Hapgood' premiered at the Aldwych Theatre, London, in March 1988.

On his graduation day in 1978, John looks back over his teenage years with warmth, remembering the joys, tensions and sorrows of family life in West Yorkshire. John, now older and educated, finds himself alienated from his working-class family who cannot understand his theatrical aspirations. 'Happy Families', first produced in 1991, is an affectionate look at a ordinary family struggling with change.
