    Deutschsprachige Gegenwartsliteratur über New York zeichnet sich durch zwei diskursive Komplexe aus: das Verhältnis von Subjekt und Metropole bzw. von Alter und Neuer Welt. Beide gehören zu den gängigen Wahrnehmungs- und Deutungsmustern deutscher Autoren. In diesen Komplexen ist das Motiv der Grenze von vorrangiger Bedeutung: Der Ort zwischen Subjekt und New York, zwischen Altern und Neuer Welt wird in den Texten gesichert, aufgelöst oder überschritten. In seiner diskursanalytisch angelegten, auf postkoloniale Theorien rekurrierenden Studie analysiert Christof Hamann dieses Motiv der Grenze in ausgewählten Romanen und Reiseberichten und zeigt, wie es für stereotype ebenso wie für differenzierte New-York-Repräsentationen zentral ist. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf dem thematisierten Repertoire, das insbesondere die Materialität und die kulturelle Heterogenität New Yorks umfasst, und den spezifischen Strategien (z.B. Perspektiven, Symbolisierungen, Metonymien, intertextuelle Verweise), durch die das Repertoire in den Texten realisiert wird

    Hella Engerer analyses the emergence, evolution and theory of property rights and establishes the limits for privatization of state owned enterprises in the transitional economies of Eastern Europe. She counters the assumption that reduction of the state sector helps to create the basis for a private property system, showing that privatization actually presupposes a stable framework including property order. She makes use of an outstanding methodological approach, reaching well beyond the limits of pure economic observation.     Throughout history, Indian culture has had the interest of the Persians. At the time of the Sasanids (3rd-7th century CE) for instance, Sanskrit works on astronomy were translated into Pehlavi. Centuries later, in the early ʿAbbāsid period, a number of astronomers with a Persian background used information from these very same sources in writing their own books in Arabic. Besides scientific works, spiritual and ethical texts were also translated. An example is the famous collection of animal fables called Kalila and Dimna , which go back to the lost Sanskrit Pañcatantra . An equally lost Middle Persian translation of this work was rendered into Arabic several times, but the translation by Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ (d. circa 139/757) proved most influential and formed the basis of the famous Persian translation by Naṣrallāh Munshī (6th/12th century). On this latter translation, two Persian commentaries from the 7th/13th century survive. A critical edition of both is offered in this volume
