    Bericht zur Tagung der Abteilung für Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft am Germanistischen Seminar der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, vom 12. bis 14. Juni 2003, gefördert durch die Fritz-Thyssen-Stiftung. Anläßlich des 60. Geburtstages von Prof Dr. Dolf Oehler veranstaltete die Abteilung für Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft am Germanistischen Seminar der Universität Bonn im Juni 2003 ein dreitägiges Colloquium zum Thema 'Die Metropole als kultureller und ästhetischer Erfahrungsraum: Komparatistische Perspektiven'. Forscherinnen und Forscher aus Deutschland und Frankreich trugen Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeiten in verschiedenen Disziplinen zusammen und diskutierten den Gegenstand sowohl in seinen historischen als auch in seinen komplexen aktuellen Bezügen.

    Theory's engagement with language on the one hand, with literature's potential to generate knowledge that is theoretically relevant on the other, has a long history. One of its roots lies in the approach to culture and society developed by enlightenment anthropology and philosophy. In this paper Christian Moser intends to analyze the function attributed to language in eighteenth-century theories of the origin of culture and society. What we nowadays call 'cultural theory' is genealogically related to these early investigations into the constitution of human society. Social theories of the enlightenment first emerged in the contexts of a secularized universal history and the nascent discourses of anthropology and the philosophy of history. They often took the form of a 'conjectural history': speculations about the origin of society and its institutions; the origin of government, of law, and of social inequality; all of them linked systematically to the origin of language. While present-day cultural theory no longer harbours this obsession with origins, it still carries with it a rich legacy of enlightenment thought, not least its idea that social structure and linguistic structure are interconnected. Therefore it seems apposite to trace back current 'languages of theory' to eighteenth-century 'theories of language' and their interplay with 'theories of society.'

    In recent years, the interest in theory which has once been a moving force of academic research in the field of literary studies appears to have decreased. The status of theory, its relevance and appropriateness for the understanding of literature have been put into doubt. Faced with this observation, some critics have even suggested that we have now entered into a new era of research which can retrospectively be identified as the era "after theory". Against the background of such pronouncements and to a certain extent in opposition to them, the investigations proposed here wish to uphold the idea of the utility and indeed the need for theoretical approaches to literature. To appreciate the status of theory and its possible contribution to a deepened understanding of literature, it is useful not to focus exclusively on the distinction or supposed divide between literature and theory. Instead we should pay attention to what links and unites them. This common ground or common denominator of literature and theory consists in the dimension of language. Furnishing, so to speak, the intellectual material from which both domains of articulation are formed, language constitutes at once the key element of literature and a principal concern of theory.

    Der vorliegende Beitrag versteht sich als Versuch, die interkulturelle Dimension der modernen Metropole von ihrer Kehrseite her zu analysieren. Stellt die 'global city' tatsächlich in allen ihren Bereichen jenen offenen Raum interkultureller Kombinatorik dar, als den sie sich auf ihrer Schauseite der Produktion und Konsumption präsentiert? Oder perpetuiert sie Mechanismen der Ausgrenzung und der Segregation, die unterschwellig wirksam bleiben? Die Analyse erfolgt unter zwei Prämissen. Sie setzt zum einen voraus, dass der Umgang mit dem Müll als kulturelle, d.h. symbolische Praxis begriffen wird. Sie bestimmt Müll nicht als etwas Überflüssiges, sondern als Zeichenmüll, der gelesen werden kann, und schließt somit an kultur- und sozialanthropologische Ansätze zur Erforschung des Abfalls an. Zum anderen werden nicht die symbolischen Praktiken der Müllbehandlung selbst, sondern ihre literarischen Repräsentationen untersucht. Dies geschieht unter der Annahme, dass die Literatur der Moderne ein besonderes Sensorium für die symbolische Ordnung entwickelt hat, die sich im Müll abzeichnet.

    Terry Eagleton stellt in seinem kleinen Büchlein über Shakespeare eine provozierende These hinsichtlich der Bedeutung der Hexen in 'Macbeth' auf: "The witches", so behauptet er, "are the heroines of the piece, […] however much the critics have set out to defame them" (Eagleton 1986, 2). Die Hexen sind die eigentlichen Heldinnen des Dramas - und das, obwohl, ja gerade weil sie als bloße Randfiguren in Erscheinung treten. Denn die Hexen werden in 'Macbeth' gezielt in einem Schwellen- und Randbereich der kulturellen und sozialen Ordnung plaziert - "its shadowy borderlands". Genauer: Als ambivalentes Grenzphänomen stellen sie das Funktionieren der kategorialen Oppositionen in Frage, die diese Ordnung begründen. Die Welt der Hexen ist keine böse und häßliche Gegenwelt zu der durch vernünftige Gesetze strukturierten, durch göttliche Autorität legitimierten Welt der Menschen. Vielmehr hebt sie den fundierenden Gegensatz zwischen gut und böse, schön und häßlich aus den Angeln: "Fair is foul, and foul is fair (1.1.12). Die Hexen in Macbeth sind Grenzwesen, die der Grenze zugleich ihre ordnende und unterscheidende Kraft rauben.
