    During the course of a study of the manuscript tradition of the Betä Ǝsraʾel (Ethiopian Jews), the manuscript Jerusalem, National Library, Ms. Or. 87 came to light. This codex is a unique manuscript with several important elements that contribute to our knowledge of the history of the Betä Ǝsraʾel. Its by far most important feature are two short additional notes that I have come to call the Hoḫwärwa genealogy. This genealogy is the second piece of original pre-twentieth century Betä Ǝsraʾel historiography ever discovered, next to the text published by Leslau in 1946-47 as ‘A Falasha Religious Dispute.’ Taking the manuscript as a starting point, this article aims to cover topics such as the Betä Ǝsraʾel scribal tradition and aspects of their literature, their monasticism, the history of Hoḫwärwa monastery, and the history of the manuscript itself.

    Autocrats typically seek public support on the basis of economic growth-promotion and redistribution policies, and China is no exception. As important as these factors are for authoritarian resilience, we argue that economic legitimation is a more complex phenomenon than has previously been acknowledged. Beyond improvements in material well-being, citizens form judgements about the state's effectiveness in carrying out a variety of economic roles beyond growth promotion and they also care about the fairness of these market interventions. In this study, we use original survey data collected in late 2015 and early 2016 to evaluate Chinese citizens’ perceptions of two economic roles of the state that have been hotly debated in recent years: state ownership and market regulation. We find that while citizens view the ideas of state ownership and interventionist regulation in a generally positive light, suggesting a broad level of agreement in Chinese society about what economic functions the state ought to perform, perceptions of how the state actually carries out these roles are more mixed. Our results show that the urban young are especially inclined to critical evaluations, raising the question of how the Chinese Communist Party's legitimation strategy will fare under conditions of inter-generational value change. ; Peer Reviewed

    Was bedeutet Ihnen die Höri? Das werde ich immer wieder gefragt. Man nimmt an, wer hier lebt und malt, muß es wissen. Und verweist auf die vielen Maler, die vor Jahrzehnten hier wohnten, eine Litanei inzwischen bekannter Namen, die da genannt werden. In der Welt draußen gepriesene Namen, die auf diese kleine Landschaft einen Glanz werfen. In ihrer Kunst ist die Höri Bild geworden. Und darauf kann man stolz sein. Der Blick auf ihre Besonderheit und Schönheit ist geöffnet, am klarsten, wie ich meine, durch die Bilder des Malers Adolf Dietrich, der drüben in Berlingen schaffte: Er ist der Eigenart von Untersee und Höri wie kaum einer gerecht geworden. Man weiß auch um die Schriftsteller, die die Höri literarisch gemacht haben. Es trifft zu, was Erhart (nicht Erich) Kästner kühn formuliert hat: „Immer muß erst der Dichter kommen und sehen. Wirklich sind nur die bedichteten Dinge.“ Da erst wird das gewöhnlich Übersehene zum Besonderen. Das stimmt so für Hermann Hesse und Ludwig Finckh, für den philosophischen Ernst Bacmeister, für Klaus Nonnenmann, für Werner Dürrson, hier vor allem auch für Jacob Picard aus Wangen, dem bisher einzigen literarisch bedeutenden Schriftsteller, der auf der Höri geboren ist.

    Abstract In fifteenth and sixteenth century Italy, even before the beginning of the Age of Discovery, numerous (travel) reports were written by commercial travellers to Asian countries, soon followed by those to the Americas and the African coastal regions. In Florence, which was a Renaissance center of cultural innovation and a financially powerful hub for the exchange of knowledge, ideas, techniques and strategies, reports from Florentine travelers received particular attention. These epistemic materializations transformed, in primary emplotments, newfound material reality and real-space travel events into codified knowledge. Once they arrived Europe and circulated among European scholars, these cultural materials were then stored in further processes of knowledge materialization. Such secondary emplotments, from 1492 on, refer to a (geographically and historically) global framework that enforces the generation and classification of knowledge. For these purposes reports from travelling authors who already use a humanist standard of knowledge—like the erudite Florentine travelers Vespucci and Verrazzano—are able to deliver precious epistemic material, that, beyond the requirements of power politics, will contribute to re-coding not only the European perspective on the world, but especially the knowledge of the others. ; Technische Universität Dresden (1019)

    Este artigo explora a produção e transmissão de ilustrações que Candido Portinari fez para uma edição norte-americana do livro de Hans Staden sobre o Brasil no século XVI. Realizados em 1941, os desenhos caíram em esquecimento por quase sessenta anos até a sua publicação póstuma em 1998 no Brasil. Este artigo argumenta que o destino dos desenhos é sintomático da articulação da memória cultural social do passado colonial brasileiro. Com base na análise da recepção crítica e do repertório visual dos desenhos, sugere que as ilustrações de Portinari divergem de representações tradicionais da morte dos povos indígenas por desafiarem a temporalidade subjacente às molduras nacionais da memória colonial. ; This article explores the production and transmission of illustrations Candido Portinari made for a North-American edition of Hans Staden's book on sixteenth-century Brazil. Made in 1941, the drawings fell into oblivion for almost sixty years, until their posthumous publication in 1998 in Brazil. The article argues that the destiny of the drawings is symptomatic for the articulation of the cultural memory of the colonial past in Brazil. Based upon the analysis of their critical reception and visual repertoire, it suggests that the drawings diverge from traditional representations of the death of indigenous people by challenging the temporality underlying the national framework of colonial memory.

    This article is an examination of the long poem 'Pimlyco, Run Red Cap or, 'tis a Mad World at Hogsdon [Hoxton], published as an anonymous pamphlet in 1609. Written apparently in praise of the tavern of Pimlyco and its famous ale, this 'medley poem' describes the Carnival spirit of this suburban resort, analysed in this article as a heterotopic adjunct to early modern London. It is argued that this text construes the suburbs within the discourses of urban pastoral, carnival, the theatre and madness, and that there is ample evidence to suggest that 'Pimlyco' is a minor but still significant source of Shakespeare's play The Tempest.

    In my contribution, I propose to study the question of Laferrière’s adoption of new media forms, leading him to resort to the hybrid genre of the graphic novel, situated halfway between literature and visual art. Using the example of Vers d’autres rives (2019), my analysis will focus on the function of this reversal for Laferrière’s project and on the resulting shifts in the relationship between autofictional production and its positioning in relation to different spaces and cities. How does the discourse of the graphic novels evolve with respect to the artist's space and cultural belonging? To answer such questions, I will first present Laferrière's autofictional work, then situate his “graphic novels” in the Quebec and Haitian contexts, and finally share some reflections on the “autographic” narrative (Whitlock 2006) and how it constructs, through writing and images, the social and medial space of narrative. The last part will focus on the analysis of Vers d’autres rives from the point of view of self-representation, sociocultural spaces, and the contribution of the intermedial to Laferrière's autofictional, spatial and poetological reflections. ; Dans ma contribution, je me propose d’étudier la question de l’adoption de nouvelles formes médiales chez Laferrière qui l’amène à recourir au genre hybride du roman graphique, situé à mi-chemin entre littérature et art visuel. Partant de l’exemple de Vers d’autres rives (2019), mon analyse portera sur la fonction de ce revirement pour le projet laferrien et sur les déplacements qui en résultent pour la relation entre la production autofictionnelle et son positionnement par rapport à différents espaces et différentes villes. Comment le discours des romans graphiques évolue-t-il en ce qui concerne l’espace et l’appartenance culturelle de l’artiste?     The knowledge of the reign of Yohannes II (r. May 10, 1769–October 15, 1769) is so far based on a brief account in Bruce’s book. This account, however, contains errors (that Yohannes II was poisoned to death). This paper brings to light an Ethiopian document (a brief contemporary chronicle) on the short-lived reign of this man. It is published with a translation and annotation.On the basis of a careful examination of the chronicle and the other fragmentary information we obtain from Salt, we conclude in this paper that firstly Yohannes was not poisoned to death (he rather died a natural death) and secondly the story of the amputation of his arm by Bekfa should at best be treated with caution because there is evidence that throws doubt on its veracity.

    Starting with the biblical Gǝyon (= the Gǝʿǝz name for the Nile) the river Nile plays an important role in Ethiopian perception.The corpus of the miracles of Mary [Täʾamrä Maryam] particularly during the reign of emperor Zärʾa Yaʿǝqob (1434-68 A.D.) was enlarged with stories reflecting a local background and Ethiopian history. And suddenly in the 19th century the ‘idea of diverting the Nile’ which since early times was a challenging topic in the relationship between Egypt and Ethiopia, again turned up in a miracle of the Virgin Mary, referring to the time of the Crusaders and the resulting diplomatic activities. This article wants to evaluate how far the Ethiopians regard themselves as masters of the Nile waters and to what extent they derive their legitimacy from divine sources.
