    If the poet's song is a 'topos' of Greek and Roman epic literature, the poet Silius Italicus renews it by describing the emotional reaction of his audience in depth and by placing it in a transitional moment of his narrative dedicated to the second Punic war. Tradition from antique historiography relates that Hannibal and his men became "soft" in Capua where feasting, pleasure, inebriation and indolence were common. Yet, Silius Italicus blames Teuthras' two songs for this weakening. This article examines Teuthras' second performance which hides beneath its soft melody a further meaning unintelligible to the audience who cannot escape their emotion. The aim is to reveal how poetical and musical emotion - 'admiratio' - and the weakening of the Carthaginians are structured in term of diegetic, and in the sub- and meta-discourse of Teuthras' second song.

    This substantial co-authored chapter examines the influence of early 20th century debates on Humanism on developments in architecture and spectacle in Fascist Italy. During a time when eminent philosophers and historians of Renaissance culture were engaged in disputes about the meaning and philosophical value of Renaissance Humanism, parallel architectural developments were taking place (specially in Italy) on the inter-relationships between modernism and classicism. These alliances were subject to much disagreement among architectural pundits (both practitioners and academics) that also drew heavily on the legacy of humanism; perceived by some as a distinctly Italian intellectual and creative movement. The chapter focuses on a number of key disputes in both Germany and Italy during the interwar period (specifically between Benedetto Croce and Giovanni Gentile and Martin Heidegger and Ernesto Grassi) that provided the basis of a fertile intellectual milieu for articulating arguments about the role of humanism in architectural creativity. Among the many architects discussed, Giuseppe Terragni, Gustavo Giovannoni and Giovanni Michelucci are the main sources, each presenting very different notions of 'Romanitas' during the period of Fascism.

    This book chapter examines the early developments of perspective in 15th century Florence, arguing that the conception of pictorial space in the Early Renaissance both drew upon late Medieval notions of luminary space and anticipated the 'geometrisation' of space in Modernity. The paper demonstrates this intermediate position (at once reflective and anticipatory) through an examination of the ideas of Nicolas Cusanus, Filippo Brunelleschi, Lorenzo Ghiberti and Leon Battista Alberti, all of whom presented different 'models' of perspective in the light of their own artistic predilections and architectural interests. A shared view however of the role and significance of perspective at this time concerns its capacity to redefine pictorially the civic and religious dimensions of the actual city. This is demonstrated in both Brunelleschi's perspective 'experiments' and Ghiberti's composition and spatial articulation of the 'Gates of Paradise' for Florence Baptistery. In the final section of the paper, I examine a photograph by Le Corbusier in which I demonstrate how his visual recording of his studio (articulated in a drawing by Peter Carl) applies similar methods of luminary and geometric relationships found in Renaissance pictorial space.

    This paper presents a preliminary approach toward a modern transla tological analysis of the first three full translations of the Qur’an: the ones by Robert of Ketton (1142–1143), Mark of Toledo (1210), and the version translated by Juan Gabriel de Teruel (1518) and corrected by Leo Africanus (1525) for the cardinal Egidio da Viterbo. Our analysis, in accord mostly with functionalist translation theories (see Nord, 2005; 2018), describes and comments on three phases of the translation process: (1) identification of the purpose of the translation and the problems to overcome in order to provide a proper rendering of the text; (2) formulation of a translating theory that serves as a general approach for translating the text; (3) choice and application of translation procedures. This approach toward the analysis of these aspects of the aforementioned translations of the Qur’an is an effort to account for the relative lack of attention that has been paid to the systematic analysis of the actual procedures by which these renderings were produced. A main point of contention of our analysis is that, while it would be misleading to state that the quality of the translations increases over time (for the quality fluctuates from fragment to fragment), nevertheless it is quite possible to assert that the overall zeal for fidelity seems to increase over time, meaning that the more the time passes, the more the translators feel compelled to preserve more features of the text.

    Trans_Konzepte dienen der Beschreibung kultureller Formationen, die gegen binäre oder dichotomisierende Ordnungsstrukturen Offenheit, Vernetzung und Prozesshaftigkeit setzen. Ein großer Vorteil dieses methodischen Zugriffs liegt darin, dass das Untersuchungsfeld des ›Trans_‹ weder kulturhistorisch noch geopolitisch gebunden ist und somit auch einen innovativen Zugang zu historischen und längst kanonisierten Texten eröffnet – oder aber bereits beobachtete, textinterne Bewegungen beschreibbar macht. So lässt sich auch Ovids 'Narcissus et Echo' als Szenario der Trans_Geschlechtlichkeit lesen. Sobald man den Fokus der Lektüre nicht auf die Autoerotisierung der Hauptfigur legt, sondern den Text von seinem Ausgangspunkt her – der Vergewaltigung von Liriope durch ihren Vater – begreift, werden weitere textimmanente Prozesse sichtbar, die eine Bewegung des ›Trans_‹ abbilden. So lässt sich Narziss als eine psychische Auslagerung seiner Mutter verstehen, die sich nach dem gewaltsamen Zugriff auf ihren Körper im geschlechtlich Polyvalenten einen neuen Existenz- und Wahrnehmungsraum schafft. Narziss erscheint darin als geschlechtlich entortet und anhand mehrerer Spiegelungen nicht auf eine eindeutige 'Substanz' oder 'Natur' zurückführbar.

    The past is narrated in retrospect. Historians can either capitalize on the benefit of hindsight and give their narratives a strongly teleological design or they may try to render the past as it was experienced by historical agents and contemporaries. This book explores the fundamental tension between experience and teleology in major works of Greek and Roman historiography, biography and autobiography. The combination of theoretical reflections with close readings yields a new, often surprising assessment of the history of ancient historiography as well as a deeper understanding of such authors as Thucydides, Tacitus and Augustine. While much recent work has focused on how ancient historians use emplotment to generate historical meaning, 'Experience and Teleology in Ancient Historiography' offers a new approach to narrative form as a mode of coming to grips with time.

    Als der englische Lordkanzler Sir Thomas More im Jahr 1516 nach einem Titel für sein neuestes Werk suchte, war 'Utopia' nicht die erste Wahl. Altphilologen unter den Utopieforschern haben auf die bedenkliche Wortfügung 'Utopia' in der Bedeutung von 'Nicht-Ort' aufmerksam gemacht. Der bekannte klassische Philologe Bernhard Kytzler z. B. schrieb 1982: "'Utopia' ist eine wohl schlagende, aber sprachlich falsche Bildung." Aus dem griechischen τοπος ("Ort") und der verneinenden Vorsilbe ου zusammengesetzt, habe dies im Lateinischen ein Kunstwort ergeben, das nicht schlechthin grammatikalisch falsch, sondern vom Autor absichtsvoll in dieser Falschheit ausgestellt worden sei! Morus hätte wissen müssen, dass die griechische Sprache bei der Verneinung eines Substantivs die Vorsilbe a benutze, bekannt als ahistorisch, amusisch, anormal. "War sich Morus seines Fehlers gar nicht bewusst? Oder hatte er Gründe, die ihn bewogen, seine sprachlich schiefe Schöpfung beizubehalten?"

    From opening books to read them, through the continuous effort at opening one's heart to God, to the eventual disclosure of God's mysteries to human beings, Augustine seems to trace an implicit conceptualization of openness in his "Confessions". The words of Matthew 7. 7–8 underlie Augustine's engagement with openness up to the very last sentence of the book, which ends with a sequence of verbs in the passive voice that culminates with the desired manifestation of the divine. The entire endeavour of opening oneself up undertaken in the "Confessions" aims at this final passive openness, which is (always) yet to come as much as human opera are (always) yet to come to completion.

It focuses in particular on evocations of this birthplace as an exposed, liminal location and argues that the radical exposure endured by Christ at the moment of his birth was crucial to medieval understandings of the significance of the Incarnation.     The final letters of Ovid's collection "Heroides" tell the remarkable story of a written oath. Acontius has fallen in love with the beautiful Cydippe. Since she is already promised to another man, Acontius uses a deceitful stratagem: he sends her an apple on which he has inscribed "cunning words", namely, an oath of engagement. As Cydippe reads the inscription aloud mechanically, she finds herself involuntarily bound to marry Acontius, and finally gives in to his insistent wooing. If read against the backdrop of a media theory of law, Ovid's story raises a couple of important questions concerning the relationship between orality and literacy at the beginning of Western legal history. While the oath undoubtedly is a fundamental element of early law, it is usually understood as part of an "archaic" oral law that is "rationalized" only afterwards by being transferred to writing. Ovid, however, presents the idea of an originally written oath and thus invites the reader to reconsider the relation between speech and writing: To what extent may writing exert a binding force that is distinct from the representation of speech?
