    'Dante and Ireland', or 'Dante and Irish Writers', is an extremely vast topic, and to cover it a book rather than an essay would be necessary. If the relationship between the poet and Ireland did not begin in the fourteenth century - when Dante himself may have had some knowledge of, and been inspired by, the "Vision of Adamnán", the "Vision of Tungdal", and the "Tractatus de purgatorio Sancti Patricii" - the story certainly had started by the eighteenth, when the Irish man of letters Henry Boyd was the first to produce a complete English translation of the "Comedy", published in 1802. Even if one restricts the field to twentieth-century literature alone, which is the aim in the present piece, the list of authors who are influenced by Dante includes Yeats, Joyce, Beckett, and Heaney - that is to say, four of the major writers not only of Ireland, but of Europe and the entire West. To these should then be added other Irish poets of the first magnitude, such as Louis MacNeice, Ciaran Carson, Eiléan Ní Cuilleanáin, and Thomas Kinsella. Therefore Piero Boitani treats this theme in a somewhat cursory manner, privileging the episodes he considers most relevant and the themes which he thinks form a coherent and intricate pattern of literary history, where every author is not only metamorphosing Dante but also rewriting his predecessor, or predecessors, who had rewritten Dante. Distinct from the English and American Dante of Pound and Eliot, an 'Irish Dante', whom Joyce was to call 'ersed irredent', slowly grows out of this pattern.

    Although Dante’s influence on modernism has been widely explored and examined from different points of view, the aspects of Virginia Woolf's relationship with the Florentine author have not yet been extensively considered. Woolf's use of Dante is certainly less evident and ponderous than that of authors such as T.S. Eliot and James Joyce; nonetheless, this connection should not be disregarded, since Woolf's reading of Dante and her meditations on his work are inextricably fused with her creative process. As Teresa Prudente shows in this essay, Woolf's appreciation of Dante is closely connected to major features of her narrative experimentation, ranging from her conception of the structure and design of the literary work to her reflections concerning the meaning and function of literary language.

Coetzee's "The Childhood of Jesus" (2013) presents a world in which the work of literature has indeed been forgotten. Migrants arrive in a new life 'washed clean' of the burden of the European tradition. Simón, who dimly recalls the old life, feels that something is missing in the new. He longs for something altogether 'other'. Might Simón learn from the exceptional child David to perceive the 'likeness' in this world? Are we to read Coetzee's novel like Simón or like David - and with what consequence for our understanding of the work of literature in a time of World Literature?

    This paper reads 'The Detainee's Tale as told to Ali Smith' (2016) as an exemplary demonstration of the work of world literature. Smith's story articulates an ethics of reading that is grounded in the recipient's openness to the singular, unpredictable, and unverifiable text of the other. More specifically, Smith's account enables the very event that it painstakingly stages: the encounter with alterity and newness, which is both the theme of the narrative and the effect of the text on the reader. At the same time, however, the text urges to move from an ethics of literature understood as the responsible reception of the other by an individual reader to a more explicitly convivial and political ethics of commitment beyond the scene of reading.

    To what extent does cultural distance interfere with or limit literary experience? What kind of intimacy is needed to make a text into a work? This essay seeks to answer these questions by focusing on the writings of Arvind Krishna Mehrotra. In doing so, it suggests that the challenges of cultural distance may be most acute when dealing with texts from homo-linguistic literary environments, and that we might overcome these challenges by undertaking a world literary criticism that attends to localized fields and materials without forgetting the charge of particular works.

    Auch wenn in der Nachfolge der Aufklärung sowie mit dem Siegeszug der modernen Naturwissenschaften eine Verlustgeschichte des Transzendenzwunders geschrieben wurde und Max Weber in seinem vielzitierten Diktum von 1917 die moderne Welt als 'entzaubert' deklarierte, entpuppte sich das vermeintlich vormoderne Phänomen des Wunders in der literarischen Moderne als Reflexionsgegenstand verschiedener Fachdisziplinen. Gleichzeitig erlebte das Wunder im Drama und Theater der Moderne eine Renaissance: Jener "clamor for miracles", so George Bernard Shaw in seinem Vorwort zu 'Androcles and the Lion', wird im zweiten Jahrzehnt des 20. Jahrhunderts in England nicht nur diskursiv verhandelt, sondern für das Publikum durchaus bühnenwirksam eingesetzt, wie ich im Folgenden erläutern möchte.

    This chapter proposes the scar as a productive image to conceptualize the relation of speakers to the particular language otherwise called mother tongue, native or first language. Thinking of this relation in terms of a scar avoids the biopolitical implications of concepts derived from the context of family and birth that have, throughout the nineteenth and twentieth century, come to present language as basis of a nation state. The image of the scar also avoids the biographical normalization and linguistic hierarchization implied in the term first language, as both are equally important biopolitical strategies of forming individuals and communities. Thinking of the mother tongue in terms of a scar emphasizes the intensity of lasting formation and identification entailed by acquiring this particular language, and it highlights the violence inherent to these processes that tends to be covered up by the naturalizing and family-related imagery of native or mother tongue as well as by the favour implied in the term first language.

    The essay focusses on how Woolf's quest for a 'universal' language of the mind can be read as redefining and even reinventing the notion of mother tongue. In particular, "The Waves" offers a reconfiguration of the process of language acquisition that symbolically reverses its linear development. Woolf's stress on a dynamic, ever-moving conception of language, her connection with Coleridge's perspectives on language, and her view of ancient Greek as an ideal lost language reveal her questioning of the idea of a culturally homogeneous and monolithic language. The notion of mother tongue is thus reconfigured by the writer in terms of a dreamed and imagined ideal language combining familiarity and foreignness, reality and ideality, exactness and the perpetual deferral of meaning.

    This article outlines a production-oriented imagology and equips the imagological toolkit with concepts and terminology from cultural memory studies, reception aesthetics, narratology, rhetoric, and text linguistics. It thereby presents the theoretical framework which makes it possible to analyse generic elements without a national connotation with regard to their function in generating a national image. Using as examples genres from English Romanticism and how they evoke Englishness, the article highlights the aesthetic complexity of national images and their range of variation. Simultaneously it paves the way for a more nuanced deconstruction of these images.

    This article analyses processes of collective and individual identity formation in European travel writing from the late eighteenth and the middle of the nineteenth century and argues that these processes are based not least on the national stereotypes described and performed in the texts. I explore how the genre-specific stylistic elements of multilingualism and intertextuality inform the performance of auto- and hetero-images and in doing so suggest converging travel writing studies and imagological studies. To illustrate my thesis, I analyse travelogues by Charles Dickens and Karl Philipp Moritz.

    This article examines striking similarities between stereotypical characters in Caroline Lee Hentz's US-American plantation novel "The Planter's Northern Bride" (1854), and Charlotte Brontë's classic "Jane Eyre" (1847). Especially, a connection can be made between Hentz's Italian "Madwoman in the attic" Claudia, and Brontë's transatlantic Caribbean counterpart Bertha. An intersectional methodology performed through a close reading will show how both women are literally and metaphorically trapped within spaces and stereotypes. This article transfers imagology into a global setting while extending its scope beyond investigating national characteristics.

    Das Konzept der Intersektionalität hat sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten in den Geistes-, Sozial- und Lebenswissenschaften als überaus einflussreich erwiesen. Auch in der Literaturwissenschaft gewinnen Intersektionalitätstheorien zunehmend an Bedeutung. Der Beitrag geht von dieser Entwicklung aus und fragt zunächst allgemein danach, wie sich das Konzept für literaturwissenschaftliche Methoden und Fragestellungen fruchtbar machen lässt, in denen die Beschäftigung mit Intersektionalität über ein Verständnis dieser als reine Identitätstheorie hinausgeht. Die Analyse von Bernardine Evaristos preisgekröntem Roman "Girl, Woman, Other" (2019) führt anschließend vor, wie Identitätsfragen aus intersektionaler Perspektive nicht nur Interdependenzen der Ungleichheiten zwischen Figuren in den Blick nehmen, sondern auch die systemischen Grundlagen dieser Ungleichheiten sowie deren Einbindung in eine hegemoniale Kulturindustrie. Mit seiner Thematisierung von Intersektionalität als Thema auf mehreren Ebenen dient der Roman als Beispiel, wie das Konzept als Theorie und Methode die Literaturanalyse bereichern kann, und umgekehrt, welche Impulse sich aus der Beschäftigung mit Literatur und narratologischen Analysekategorien wie Perspektive und Perspektivenstruktur auch für die Intersektionalitätsforschung gewinnen lassen.

    Bereits mit dem Titel dieses Bandes wird in Aussicht gestellt, darin "Biopolitik(en) in Literatur, Film und Serie" zu thematisieren. Mit der Überschrift dieses Beitrags wird hierzu analog angekündigt, die "Modi der Aushandlung menschlichen Lebens in (Gegenwarts-)Literatur, Film und Serie" zu untersuchen. Was jedoch meint 'in' im gegebenen Kontext? Worin besteht die Konnexion zwischen biopolitischer Thematik und künstlerischem Medium, die über die Präposition zum Ausdruck gebracht wird? Zunächst kann ein Auftreten biopolitischer Themen in Erzähltexten auf Ebene der 'histoire' festgestellt werden, insofern Biopolitik in ihren diversen Spielarten die Settings und Plots literarischer wie filmischer erzählender Texte ausgestaltet. [...] Weitergehend kann eine Wirksamkeit biopolitischer Fragestellungen in Erzähltexten auf Ebene des 'discours' konstatiert werden, sobald Biopolitik zum Reflexionsanlass eines erzählenden Textes wird. Über Szenario und Handlung hinausgehend, eröffnen semantische, narratologische oder metafiktionale Auseinandersetzungen mit biopolitischen Fragen neue Aushandlungs- und Reflexionsräume, in denen Biopolitik perspektiviert und problematisiert wird und mit denen eine kritische Revision durch die Rezipierenden initiiert wird. In dieser Variante biopolitischer Thematik in erzählenden Texten wird somit Biopolitik nicht nur zur Darstellung gebracht, sondern zur Disposition gestellt. In dieser Weise kann ein Erzähltext selbst als Beitrag zum biopolitischen Diskurs fungieren und als solcher Lebenswissen generieren. Auf diesen Prämissen aufbauend werden im Folgenden zunächst der Begriff der Biopoethik und die Besonderheiten biopoethischer Modi skizziert, bevor eine ausführlichere Betrachtung vier solcher Modi an konkreten Erzähltextbeispielen erfolgt. Als komplementäre Ergänzung zur Produktivität biopolitischer Diskurse, wie sie im voranstehenden Beitrag erarbeitet wird, soll so die Produktivität narrativer Biopolitik(en) verdeutlicht werden.

    Nach dem Anthropologen Kaushik Sunder Rajan bedeutet der Biokapitalismus die Überdeterminierung der Wirtschaft bei biopolitischen Entscheidungen. Die Überdeterminierung heißt in diesem Fall eine starke wirtschaftlich-politische Beeinflussung der Richtung wissenschaftlicher Forderung und Entwicklung. Ein extremes Beispiel für solch ein System ist in der Dystopie "Brave New World" (1932) vorzufinden, mit der sich dieser Aufsatz beschäftigt. Zuerst werden die Begriffe der Biopolitik nach Michel Foucault und des Biokapitalismus nach Kaushik Sunder Rajan definiert. Darauf aufbauend untersucht die Arbeit den Biokapitalismus innerhalb der Gesellschaft von Aldous Huxleys Roman. Dafür wird zunächst der Autor, sein zeitlicher Kontext und der Aufbau der dystopischen Gesellschaft thematisiert. Im Hauptteil befasst sich der Aufsatz mit folgender Fragestellung: Wie zeigt sich der Biokapitalismus in Huxleys "Brave New World"? Dabei sind die Ziele des Aufsatzes die Beantwortung der Fragestellung und die Herauskristallisierung der Gefahren dieser dystopischen Gesellschaft für unsere Gegenwart. Diese werden zum Schluss im Fazit zusammengefasst erläutert.

    In dem Roman "Never Let Me Go" von Kazuo Ishiguro erzählt Kathy H. kurz vor Ablauf ihrer Lebenszeit in einer Rückblende ihre Lebensgeschichte. Ihr Rückblick beginnt in Hailsham, einem Internat, wo sie zusammen mit Tommy und Ruth ihre Kindheit erlebt. Sie erfährt recht früh, dass sie und alle Kinder, die das Internat besuchen, Klone sind und eines Tages der Gesellschaft, von der sie geschaffen wurden, ihr Leben bzw. ihre Körper in Form einer Organspende bereitstellen müssen. [...] Die Klone sind in den Augen der Nicht-Klone weniger wert, als diejenigen, denen sie nachgebildet sind und werden von den Nicht-Klonen durch verschiedene Mechanismen biopolitisch manipuliert und gesteuert. Kathys und Tommys Bestreben ihre Liebe zu leben und die Suche der Protagonist*innen nach der eigenen Identität stehen im Fokus der Handlung. Deshalb stelle ich mit dem Titel "Klon, Person, Identifikation" die Frage nach der Menschlichkeit der Protagonist*innen an den Anfang meiner Überlegungen zu dem Roman von Kazuo Ishiguro. Im weiteren Verlauf meines Aufsatzes beschäftige ich mich mit der Frage nach den biopolitischen Zusammenhängen zwischen der Identitätsfindung auf der einen Seite und der Identitätsentwicklung der Klone auf der anderen Seite.

    In "Teaching Empathy and Emotions: J. M. Coetzee's 'The Lives of Animals' and Human-Animal Studies," Alexandra Böhm focuses on one of the most influential novels in the field of HAS. In her article, she delineates the two main difficulties in teaching Coetzee's text: firstly, the text's protagonist, fierce and fearless Australian author Elizabeth Costello, is often less-than-lovable and offers few grounds for identification; secondly, the text's multilayered structure further problematizes the authorial voice. However, by focusing on Costello's reassessment of emotion and empathy, Böhm convincingly demonstrates that Coetzee's text offers possibilities for understanding the key concepts of HAS, such as animal agency, alterity, and the necessity of assuming a non-anthropocentric perspective. In the narrative, Costello employs empathy in her approach to animals, but is this also true of the metadiegetic level of Coetzee's text? Does the text itself suggest how to teach empathy? Alexandra Böhm demonstrates that it is possible to elicit affective responses to these questions through emotion journals and role-playing.
